<flayer>
hey james
<Jameskermen2011>
hello
<Jameskermen2011>
what version do you guys play on [consle pc etc]
<Mat2ch>
The version steam provides here
<Jameskermen2011>
oh
<Pinkbeast>
1.9 PC
<Jameskermen2011>
noice
<Jameskermen2011>
i play on xbox lol
<SporkWitch>
Pinkbeast: why 1.9?
<Pinkbeast>
This may be less true now development has ceased, but back in the day I found if I chased versions I spent all my time waiting for mods I wanted to be updated, fiddling with new mods, etc. So once I've accumulated a reasonably pleasing mod set I stop and get something actually done.
<Jameskermen2011>
hmmm
<Jameskermen2011>
interresting
<Jameskermen2011>
[interesting]
* raptop
uses 1.12.3 pc
<raptop>
but, I tend to more or less stock because I'm too lazy to mess with mods
<Pinkbeast>
I've only got 100 or so
<Jameskermen2011>
haha yes same buts thats mostly because theres no mods for xbox ksp
<raptop>
I mean, Making History and Breaking Ground are good about being updated, but it would be rather embarassing if they weren't
<Jameskermen2011>
yeah
<Jameskermen2011>
i still do stock even i figured out dev cheats
<Jameskermen2011>
brb
<SporkWitch>
Pinkbeast: definitely less of an issue now, but even those that are flagged in CKAN as earlier max versions tend to still run fine. The only real issues I've encountered are with Linux on some mods (ironically, all examples were mods from linuxgurugamer, who apparently doesn't game on linux... lol)
<packbart>
linuxgurus recognize Windows as the superior game loader ;)
<SporkWitch>
false for the most part, these days; not a lot of games that don't run just fine in linux these days.
<Jameskermen2011>
back
<flayer>
i've gamed on linux for 15 years
<SporkWitch>
on that note, i'll probably make a project of that once they finally get around to onboarding me with the SWG R3 team: get their launcher working on linux
<Pinkbeast>
flayer: I'd stop and have a bit of sleep if I were you
<packbart>
with all the RTX/DLSS bells and whistles?
<Jameskermen2011>
as of current im on CROME OS
<flayer>
Pinkbeast, HO HO HO HO
<packbart>
tbh, I don't mind using Win10 to play
<Pinkbeast>
I'm still launching KSP from Win 7 (yes, I know; no, it isn't)
<SporkWitch>
packbart: with all two games that support all the RTX/DLSS bells and whistles? lol By the time enough games actually support it to be a decision factor, we can expect the linux drivers to support it. Nvidia's only ever really screwed linux when it comes to 3d, otherwise their proprietary drivers are excellent
<packbart>
hm. I have several games in my Steam library that supposedly use it
<SporkWitch>
Pinkbeast: please at least promise you don't access your bank or anything else that matters from that computer lol
<packbart>
Shadow of the Tomb Raider did look quite fantastic, too
<Pinkbeast>
"yes, I know; no, it isn't"
<SporkWitch>
you were unclear, i had to ask lol
<Jameskermen2011>
wow
<flayer>
the whole world's office infrastructure ran on windows xp for a good decade or so
<flayer>
i'm pretty sure Pinkbeast can survive this tragedy
<SporkWitch>
flayer: it was getting security updates for a good decade or so lol
* packbart
updates NodeJS libraries in a water filtration system
<flayer>
...eventually
<Jameskermen2011>
yup flayer
<SporkWitch>
eventually > never
<Pinkbeast>
Win 7 is still in extended security supporty
<flayer>
SporkWitch, plenty of old machines still around today in the background
<Jameskermen2011>
yes and it still used in offeces pinkbeast
<SporkWitch>
sure, i've even worked on some. I remember back in the early 2000s I did some maintenance on an old AT machine that had been running a factory floor since the 80s lol
<SporkWitch>
you don't connect these things to the internet, though lol
<Pinkbeast>
Jameskermen2011: and on my games machine :-)
<Jameskermen2011>
[and somehow windows xp is still in offices]
<SporkWitch>
Jameskermen2011: and those companies deserve what happens to them lol
<Jameskermen2011>
haha yes sporkwitch
<SporkWitch>
if they're that cheap, use linux; unless they've got some ridiculous piece of custom software, there're really no need for windows in the workspace and hasn't been in over a decade. 99% of stuff is a web interface these days, and even silverlight's been phased out (though you can get that working on linux, too)
<Jameskermen2011>
true
<Jameskermen2011>
brb ima play with dog
<SporkWitch>
Ironically, the CCP is working hard to get all of their infrastructure off of western IP (though it's safe to say they're just going to use their stolen copies, not FOSS)
funkenstein has quit [Quit: webchat.esper.net]

well, they've got some new RISC V stuff
<flayer>
SporkWitch, i've seen ATMs with windows xp bluescreen after security updates stopped
<Jameskermen2011>
annnd im back
<Jameskermen2011>
sporkwitch really?
<SporkWitch>
flayer: I believe the embedded XP support cycle was significantly longer than workstation or server. Those systems, same as POS systems such as in supermarkets, would be embedded XP, not workstation.
<Jameskermen2011>
yes
<Jameskermen2011>
haha kerbal go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
<SporkWitch>
Jameskermen2011: yeah. Between the push to move production out of China, especially after what they pulled 2019-present, and gearing up for taking Taiwan, they're trying to get off of western products that they (rightly) fear could be potentially compromised; same reason using Huawei and such for critical infrastructure is banned in most of the world.
<Pinkbeast>
I wonder if we might be sneaking up on the edge of the no-politics rule
<SporkWitch>
They also just want to keep the money flow in, not out
<Jameskermen2011>
