You are sent on a mission to deliver Gilly to Mun orbit. A random graysuit falls into the ocean east of KSC at 150 m/s.

Izaya: so apparently the new job uses a better payroll company, despite still using Workday for all of it. My checks are back to coming in two days early. Just got paid, paid all my bills, and placed order for RTX3080. It'll be here Friday, so I'll be able to let you know about whether it's the CPU or the GTX1060 bottlenecking me
<umaxtu>
does the money actually show up in your account early or does it show up "pending"?
<SporkWitch>
actually shows up
<SporkWitch>
showing pending looks VERY different
<umaxtu>
mine just shows up pending 2 days early
<SporkWitch>
I do appreciate the concern though; you're absolutely right that that's the difference between things going through and an overdraft fee
<SporkWitch>
I have Service Credit Union because i'm a veteran. They make the money available as early as THEY are satisfied it's coming in. So direct deposits for work usually only show pending for a couple hours before they make it available. It's one of the perks they offer. They know it's going through, and they don't play games with you or your money.
<umaxtu>
nice!
<SporkWitch>
yeah, best bank i've ever had; why i got the card through them. I might have been able to maybe get a better rate somewhere else, but i trust my credit union, as much as anything like that CAN be trusted heh
<umaxtu>
all I get from my credit union is a measly 4% interest on my checking account /s
<SporkWitch>
i mean, real talk, that's pretty huge, especially on CHECKING. I only get interest on my savings.
<SporkWitch>
(which basically don't exist, except for the 750 i had to put in it and can't access, to secure the credit card; i had bad credit, i'm working on fixing it; with the new job, after my celebration gift of the new GPU, the plan is to not change my spending and just put the extra money into savings, until i can figure out a way to get the savings OUT of USD into something that isn't intentionally
<SporkWitch>
being destroyed)

So what did people end up deciding on for orientation lights for stations and such?
<funkenstein>
for personal stations in KSP or
<Izaya>
I'm interested in both standards in use IRL and stuff people are using in KSP.
<funkenstein>
I use lime green for illuminating docking ports and the area in front of it, so your craft is lit in green on approach, purple to indicate port, and red to indicate starboard, then sky blue for front-sides and either dark blue for rover rears or bright yellow for station rears.
<funkenstein>
I also use fire to burn those who spell complete "compleat"
<darsie>
Someone wrote "This book is not for the compleat idiot."
<SporkWitch>
funkenstein: by formal standards, port should be red, starboard green
<Althego>
and back is white
<SporkWitch>
^
<Althego>
and flashinf red on top and bottom
<packbart>
I'd really like red blinkenlights at the ends of the long solar panels :)
<SporkWitch>
no formal standards for spacecraft yet, but the standards for aircraft were taken and adapted directly from the standards for seagoing ships, so we can be reasonably certain that the port-red starboard-green will stay around. question is what to use for dorsal and ventral. Cygnus uses two white on the dorsal side, and one yellow on the ventral
<Althego>
yes quite logical
<Althego>
dragon is already like that
<Althego>
at least for left and right, i am not sure it has anything towards the back
<SporkWitch>
notably it DOESN"T have a taillight, even though the design clearly has space for one, but that kind of makes sense given that rendesvous pretty much has to be intentional given the, well, SPACE involved
<packbart>
the space station entraces in Elite also use red/green
<packbart>
it's the future!
<SporkWitch>
yeah, i don't think any are bothering with a light on the back because it just isn't needed. It's not like aircraft or boats where you could stumble across another craft; with spacecraft, if you're close enough to see the lights, it's on purpose, so you'd be facing the station or other ship
<packbart>
there is no stealth in space, or so I've heard ;)
<SporkWitch>
as from the discussion on this topic last week, dorsal and ventral are essential, though, since you need to know the rotation relative to you; with an aircraft or ship, you can know if you're facing the front or back by which side the red and green are on, but in space it could be "upside down" relative to you
<SporkWitch>
yes and no. engine plumes would be a big give-away, and any other thermal output would also show contrast against the background. at the same time, space is big and ships are small, so you've gotta be watching that area to notice
<Althego>
not really, because most of the time only rcs
<Althego>
and either invisible, or points to random directions anyway
<SporkWitch>
yeah, but by the time where RCS is the primary thing you're using, you're likely in visual range anyway. Doesn't matter how stealthy your craft is if i can stare at it with a mk1 eyeball
<SporkWitch>
the big one you're going to notice is your transfer burn and capture/circularization burn. The rest of the time you're coasting and it's just your light and thermal emissions to pick you up by
<SporkWitch>
which even that isn't terrible to pick up, the main issue is just how much space there is to watch. so sure, there's "no stealth" in space, but there's enough space you've gotta be watching that it's easy to miss something
<packbart>
so we'll need a fleet of probes patrolling the solar system and an AI to make sense of all the data. it will disregard the alien invasion as a statistical blip, anyway
<packbart>
"must've been the solar wind
<Pinkbeast>
RCS or no, you give out heat and occlude background stars
<Izaya>
you can't change course significantly without being bright and warm
<Pinkbeast>
And you also can't stay put without being warm, especially if you're kerballed
<funkenstein>
sporkwitch I'm aware but I like what I like for my own craft
