Shout-out to the LV-303 'Pug' Liquid Fuel Engine for being an adequate substitute for a heatshield in addition to being a pretty good orbital engine.
<Izaya>
Gonna be nice to research the better nuclear engines though, then I can drop all the solar panels from later designs, because I can run the nuclear reactor to cool the tanks.

You attempt to push Jool into the Fulton Gap to increase the amount of land for Kerbals to live on. Lagrange points out the error of your ways.
<Mat2ch>
if KSP would simulate them, they would.
* UmbralRaptop
wonders if I need to explain the reference in the mission part of that one
<Mat2ch>
The mission was to push Jool there to evaporate parts of its atmosphere which would maybe make it habitable...
<Mat2ch>
But it would probably just suck up Kerbin in the process. It could work, but Kerbin would be gone.
<SporkWitch>
there's the mod that jumps forward to the sun's red giant phase; the kerbals moved to and terraformed Duna

Think I've finally figured out a lander design for my first Mun mission, even more compact than my previous design: https://shadowkat.net/tmp/4a64.jpg
<SporkWitch>
it's so tiny!
<Izaya>
Seats two, uses radial engines so it can have a cupola on the top and a docking port on the bottom.
<Izaya>
It's less useful than the 4-kerbal lander, but it's much simpler to integrate with my mission
<Izaya>
Plus, it's lighter
<Izaya>
Did I mention it's cheap?
<Deddly>
That's really sweet. Got some tweakscaling going on?
<Izaya>
Nope, just lots of part mods
<Deddly>
Makes sense. I thought that cupola looked small :)
<Izaya>
That one's from SSPX-R
<Izaya>
I've clipped it into a Tantares airlock module
<Izaya>
the airlock doesn't have an IVA so it's sorta wigging out with the clipping
<Izaya>
ah well
<Izaya>
Also: because it's so round, if you flip it over, you can retract the legs and roll it upright!
<Izaya>
Also, definitely going to take an extra tank of LF now that I've tried this thing, two landings and two flags on my first Mun mission of this save
<SporkWitch>
damn
<Izaya>
Conveniently enough, a full refill is exactly the size of a LF-12-200 tank

or any aerospike
<Althego>
somehow it is just never worth it
<Althego>
maybe it will be something like the electric pump on the rutherford engine, people avoid it until somebody made it, an adter that it became popular
<SporkWitch>
more complicated design, more things to go wrong. Just easier to do multiple stages. I would be curious to see an attempt at variable bells; the space shuttle kind of did it, but not by a massive amount.
<SporkWitch>
people have made aerospikes, they're just complicated. also harder to gimble
<darsie>
some tap off cycles emerged, too.
<SporkWitch>
Firefly uses that, doesn't it?
<darsie>
yeah

wellp, did have enough fuel, but no way to keep it upright, and i couldn't wiggle it into an angle that would let me lift off without exploding; oh well, good thing i made a quicksave before deorbiting lol
<umaxtu>
looks like you can cut back on the propellant next time
<SporkWitch>
went the opposite, i still got enough to get the 1-3 pod, so i scaled up and added legs lol
<SporkWitch>
i've also learned to embrace "moar boosters," so in the absence of a good transfer stage engine at 2.5m, i used a plate and stuck two cheetahs on it
