<Mat2ch> shouldn't have said that.

<LunchBot> You organize Kerbtoberfest. Your craft becomes so famous a well-known folk song is written about it. This is best performed on a faulty accordion while drunk.
<Judge_DedD> Well, I guess that works well in conjunction with Kerbtoberfest
<Pinkbeast> !mission add You experiment with boosters filled with superheated steam rather than conventional propellant.
<LunchBot> Added mission: You experiment with boosters filled with superheated steam rather than conventional propellant.
<Althego> low isp
<Judge_DedD> Mike Hughhes
<Pinkbeast> I think that depends on the pressure (designing a booster to be light and contain steam at 100 bar is left as an exercise for the reader)
<Althego> for a stunt it works i guess, safer than actual combustion
<Judge_DedD> Wait... you're pre-filling boosters with steam? What's the advantage of that over an air/water rocket?
<Althego> you have to note that the guy had balls. also died like a true kerbal. incorrect staging with parachute opening on launch
<Pinkbeast> I think with sufficiently magic material science it could work quite well - for one thing the pressure and hence thrust will fall off as the booster empties (and your ship gets lighter) so you won't get that inconvenient G spike at the end. (I appreciate real SRBs don't have a perfectly constant thrust a la KSP)
<Pinkbeast> Judge_DedD: Better energy density, same reason fireless locomotives were filled with steam
<Judge_DedD> Carbon Fibre tanks can safely hold 300 bar, if I remember correctly.
<Judge_DedD> Never heard of a fireless locomotive. Very interesting!
<Pinkbeast> I think there are one or two still left in preservation
<Althego> no technology ever dies out
<Pinkbeast> fireless locomotives> TBH also because you already know how to make the drive mechanism for a steam locomotive, but the energy density is also good - it's sheer luck for the 19th century that water has the right characteristics.
<Althego> there must be a few running somewhere, if for nothing else, as some kind of attraction
<Pinkbeast> attraction> that's what I mean by "in preservation", as opposed to the handful of working steam left
<Judge_DedD> Wikipedia says: Several locomotive builders produced fireless engines throughout the 20th century. Meiningen Steam Locomotive Works was still building them in the 1980s. Some fireless locomotives are in daily use even in 2021. One example is the large coal-fired power station in Mannheim where coal is delivered by rail in long trains of self-discharging hopper wagons. Three fireless engines are used to shunt the hoppers on the premises of the
<Judge_DedD> power station.
<Pinkbeast> Huh, I sit corrected, I had no idea some were still working!
<Judge_DedD> And yes, there are lots of preserved ones still going
<Judge_DedD> There's also MDI who have been working on compressed air cars for decades and released exactly zero of them. Nice concept though.
<Pinkbeast> (ah, by "working" I mean productively employed like the ones in Mannhein, not "working" as in "can still move")
<Mat2ch> Judge_DedD: You can get carbon fibre tanks holding over 900 bar.
<Mat2ch> don't ask me how I know, sad story. (Also might involve politics)
<Pinkbeast> I hear you can get ones... ah, are we allowed to make jokes about the Titanic submarine here?
<Pinkbeast> I'm less sure that carbon fibre is not damaged by superheated steam
<Mat2ch> you'd use an aluminium tank wrapped with carbon fibre
<Mat2ch> the question is: How to keep the heat in?
<Pinkbeast> You don't - you fill it up immediately before launch
<Mat2ch> that could work
<Pinkbeast> (and unlike a SRB, want to abort? You open the valve at the front of the tank producing zero net thrust)

<Althego> i have been thinking
<Althego> what if i try to isntall some mods for a change, after a decade maybe it is time
<Althego> and see what i can do
<darsie> Mat2ch: Are you using RCS and 'control from here' of the docking port?
<darsie> And 'set as target' of the target docking port?
<darsie> I find docking pretty satisfying.
<darsie> It can be tricky without RCS.
<Althego> so is there a usual visual mods combo?
<darsie> what?
<darsie> You haven't installed any mods so far?
<Althego> what does marsellus wallace look like?
<darsie> The French guy in Matrix?
<Althego> usually not. used to have chatterer and ker. but after a while the stock delta v calculator was enough
<Althego> so i didnt bother with chatterer
<darsie> Or the boss in ... Pulp Fiction?
<Althego> i tried scatterer and eve or was it sve once. and the horizon was horibly aliased. i decided to roll that back
<darsie> Marsellus Wallace is a crime lord and the main antagonist of Pulp Fiction. He is the husband of Mia Wallace and the boss of Vincent Vega, Jules Winnfield, and Butch Coolidge.

<Althego> so anyway years have passed since then, probably the aliased horizon problem is solved, i have a really strong pc so no mod could pose a problem

<Althego> apparently volumetric clouds is early access on patreon
<Althego> i am going to skip that
<Mat2ch> darsie: yes, I do. Also using navyfish docking port alignment mod
<Mat2ch> but doing missions over and over again gets boring.
<Mat2ch> Now I have to build a base on Laythe
<Mat2ch> this is a bit more tricky
<Mat2ch> Of course I'll send both base parts in a single package. But now I have to think about atmosphere and parachutes and stuff.

<Althego> eh tufx requires module manager
<Althego> i hate that. it infects everything
<Mat2ch> almost every mod requires module manager
<Mat2ch> are you using ckan?
<Althego> no i dont want to
<Althego> that would make sense only if i constantly tinker wih mmods
<Althego> also mods require module manager because they want to change the configs. but i dont want to change the behavior of already ezxisting parts
<Althego> at best adding new parts
<Althego> anyway for purely visual changes most things on the list of matt dont need it
<Mat2ch> eh, I just let ckan handle everything and don't have to care about what needs patching
<Althego> that patching thing is a stupid way to do it. why put them into separate dirs if one mod infects other dirs
<Althego> you cant just remove them
<Althego> also dont use the win11 builtin compression support it uses on thread
<Mat2ch> the original game data has to be patched or you have to make a full copy of it and unload the "old" version
<Mat2ch> but patching on start is more reliable
<Althego> maybe next time i am starting to mod subnautica
<Althego> for the 15th playthrough :)
<Althego> well gameloaded up
<Althego> let's se if i load something

<Althego> no clouds but i am not paying for clouds
<Althego> you know your plane is overpowered if you are over the speed of sound at sea level with quarter thrust
<Mat2ch> ehm, yes
<Mat2ch> not even my builds do that usually :D
<Althego> the trees update in a strange and annoying way
<Althego> i can see a circle around the plane as they update, that is the problem
<Althego> ok let's try waterfall too
<Althego> nopw i am one step away from the station aprts
<Althego> but i dont like stations much
<Althego> seems to be doing something, i saw the air vibrate behind the jets
