can someone explain to me what the point of the pivot is on the stock grapple claw? I can't think of a time that I have found it necessary or useful and I don't really know what it does

it’s so you can grab something with a weird shape like an asteroid and the pivot so that the thrust of your ship is exactly behind the center of gravity of the object. then lock pivot into place

Bornholio, There isn't really anything such as Orphaned Parts anymore. They simply do not show up on the tech tree because the exiting Tech nodes that they are placed in (stock KSP nodes) do not exit on the tree

What I think would have to happen is that a MM patch is made that has to run after every other patch and basically is a giant OR statement that is IF techRequired = "stock node" then put in new tech tree node
