sitting here trying to make a functional Ares I rocket and it can't get orbit and I can't figure out why... and then I realize that my goddamn CSM (Taurus) just has too much mass... Ares I can only get 25t to orbit and I'm in the high 50s

it's not an RO install but I stole parts of RO and I thought the masses were right but they arent

and of course the stock masses are just all wrong to begin with but I started REALLY looking at just how wrong they are and figuring out ballistic coefficients for everything

btw did you know they made the Mk 1-3 2.6 tons? An improvement but still too much mass for something so small

and heat shields are just way too much mass

so I start looking at RO parts and I'm seeing some issues there too

heat shield for the apollo is 848 units of ablative... and it's not too hard to see where that number came from

interesting read, definitely brings to mind concerns as to how to properly translate these things to KSP... the part they're talking about is really part of the capsule itself... typically you'd see that categorized as structural mass and not really part of the shield itself...

bornholio you know what's funny? A lot of the stock heat shield specs (mass, ablative density and quantity per part) come from DRE? And they've had those values long before I took it over but I could have fixed it a long time ago
