I have maaaaany issues with the season 3 finale of stargate atlantis
<G-Mobile>
They determine that the one ship has been checking out the replicator planet periodically and three fuckin weeks ago they discovered new shipyards, and didnt fucking tell anyone
<G-Mobile>
They assume that the replicators are building ships to destroy atlantis, totally unfounded
<G-Mobile>
main dude thinks that they're building this many ships to attack earth, totally unfounded
<G-Mobile>
so they jump via hyperspace to close range with the replicator planet
<G-Mobile>
Atlantis itself has sensors that can passively track ships in subspace
<G-Mobile>
and then they fire a multiwarhead nuclear missile, which is allllll sorts of dumb
<G-Mobile>
there is no reason to believe any magnetude of detonation would bypass replicator shields
<G-Mobile>
there is no reason to believe that the replicators lack the capacity to strike the warheads in flight
<G-Mobile>
so, this attack was dumb and canonical would fail
<G-Mobile>
a fact only proven by the replicator retaliation, an attack of such insignificance on their part that had they actually wanted to destroy atlantis or earth, they simply would have

so, a thing that sucks about PCs is fan control and responsive thermal management; what iff instead of relying on the motherboard to be decent at shit, you installed a FLIR camera in your case and designate regions of the image space as control points, then that does some weighted math to determine what the fan speeds should be
<G-Mobile>
the entire system would run essentially without the computer's involvement, probably be powered of molex or sata-power, though USB would work and provide access for configuration
<G-Mobile>
is there a FLIR camera for arduipo?
<G-Mobile>
yes, it's 60$
<G-Mobile>
260*
<G-Mobile>
I wish I had CATIA built into my head, I'm terrible at space geometry but I know how to resolve every situation in CATIA
<G-Mobile>
with a horizontal view angle of 51 degrees and a diagonal view angle of 63.5 diagonal view angle, how far away from an ATX keyboard would it need to be; I could be done with that already in catia
<G-Mobile>
just build a pyramid where the base is ATX and the angles are as specified and measure the height

darklight: just gorgle it, they bought a 50k$ camera and it came with nothing necessary to use it, and every piece he had to buy to use it at all cost like two grand
<G-Mobile>
the cable to connect the viewfinder to the expander module is about a foot, and over 200$
<darklight>
Is it a hasselblad?
<G-Mobile>
a what
<darklight>
A fancy expensive camera
<G-Mobile>
it's an 8k Red
<G-Mobile>
imagine if you bought a car, and all you got was an engine
<G-Mobile>
according to MKBHD's video on the same camera, this isn't even Red's most expensive camera
<G-Mobile>
so, there's a couple of things I find particularly offensive about this device
<G-Mobile>
when you buy the 50k$ camera, it doesn't come with a battery, 1700$, and it doesn't come with the module to plug in their proprietary m.2 SSD modules
<G-Mobile>
I can understand not including the SSD, but not including the fucking socket, fuck you red
<darklight>
I don't understand why he brought it tbh
<G-Mobile>
because it's good
<darklight>
I know someone who films in 480p and has half a million subs
<G-Mobile>
you always want to record video at about double the highest resolution you edit down to, and LMG is an advertising firm that focuses on high end physical objects so they need to be publishing at the highest reasonable resolution they expect their audience to be consuming
<G-Mobile>
they've been publishing at 1080 and recording at 4k for a while, now the market is shifting up and they want to be publishing 4k, so they need to move up to 8k
<G-Mobile>
nobody is going to give a shit about 480 glam shots of the fancy new GTX10titan90Ti

youtube should add a button on ads "I am not interested in this", they don't have to act on it but it does provide them with data to try and more correctly target ads; and it's trivial to detect when someone is just clicking off on every ad

can you determine the wavelength of a wave without observing half a wavelength of it?
<Supernovy>
Well, before you can observe half a wavelength, you have to observe a quarter
<Supernovy>
and before a quarter, an eightth
<Supernovy>
and before that, a sixteenth
<G-Mobile>
but that's trivial
<Supernovy>
and so on forever. In fact, you'll never be able to measure a wavelength because you have to measure infinite pieces of it first
<G-Mobile>
if you were going to enter this into a task manager yes
<G-Mobile>
however reality progresses without concern for xeno
<Supernovy>
To this day we still don't know the wavelength of xeno-rays
<G-Mobile>
say you had a wave with a wavelength of one lightyear, could you determine it's wavelength in less than 182 days
<Supernovy>
I think you could get it from the energy of the photons.
<Supernovy>
particularly for short wavelengths
<Supernovy>
Use some kind of photoelectric measurement. e=hf, c=f*lambda
<G-Mobile>
right, because a wavelength of 1ly is short
<Supernovy>
It's got a frequency of 1 year
<Supernovy>
er, 1 per year
<Supernovy>
But the principle works

<G-Mobile>
Do hall effect sensors consume energy constantly or can they be like a normally off transistor
<angavrilov>
well, since they are based on measuring the effect of magnetic field on moving electrons, presumably they need to have moving electrons
<G-Mobile>
it'd be nice if it was rechargable but it cant fit an 18650
<G-Mobile>
Flashlights are an infuriating category
<darklight>
Surely 18650 flashlights aren't that expensive
<G-Mobile>
theres loads of high power microusb lithium rechargable flashlights, but most of them have a side switch, most of them have a pull zoom, most of them have single button multimode operation
<G-Mobile>
relatively few use 18650s, most use that cell that's a third as long
<G-Mobile>
only one thing should ever happen when you push the button on a flashlight; it turns on in exactly the same way every time
<darklight>
Do you not have a phone?
<darklight>
They have flashlights :P
<G-Mobile>
I do, doesn't serve my needs
<G-Mobile>
I need a focused bright spot, for bike riding and gauge reading
<darklight>
Oh, a bike safety light thingy
<G-Mobile>
nah, those are mounted on the bike
<G-Mobile>
this would be for road sight
<G-Mobile>
mostly I ride in the dark
<G-Mobile>
like, I see good at night, so flashlights reduce safety
<G-Mobile>
the majority of what I do with a flashlight is point it at needle gauges on our glycol system to cast the needle's shadow onto the graduations and get a more reliable and readable reading
<GlassYuri>
I don't know about laythe but a lathe only works with round things?
<GlassYuri>
do you mean the finish of the top surface where the reflections have that central point?
<SilverFox>
yeah
Thomas|AWAY is now known as Thomas
<SilverFox>
always love it when people say they can pull litres of water in a day from a garden light sized solar cell
<GlassYuri>
solar cells produce lots of water ya know
<G-Mobile>
SilverFox: yes
<SilverFox>
they produce fuckall energy
<SilverFox>
G-Mobile, is a laythe the only way of produce that look effectively/practically?
<G-Mobile>
Yes
<SilverFox>
neat
<SilverFox>
so they laythe cut these boxes
<G-Mobile>
a similar look without the concentricity can be achieved by a a flycutter on a mill
<G-Mobile>
In all likelihood that product was not produced with a lathe
<G-Mobile>
most likely it was cast or injection molded (you can injection mold low temperature metals), and then had a surface treatment applied
<G-Mobile>
It could be impression stamped, but a die of that shape would erode very quickly
<G-Mobile>
SilverFox: the trick of the question is that effective practical options are almost always worse options than cheating
<G-Mobile>
The most cheaty way to do do it is to just spin some sandpaper on it
<GlassYuri>
hey G-Mobile btw
<G-Mobile>
Yeeeeehys?
<GlassYuri>
difference between die casting and injecton molding (other than that one is for metal and one for plastic)
<G-Mobile>
Did you touch a china rail dick?
<GlassYuri>
I actually ordered something straight from china now just as a test
<GlassYuri>
it hasn't arrived yet
<G-Mobile>
Injection molding is for flowable liquids that harden by cooling
<G-Mobile>
you can injection mold metals
<GlassYuri>
...what *doesn't* harden by cooling?
<SilverFox>
cooling to room temp I presume
<G-Mobile>
Clay
<SilverFox>
yo can you make diamonds liquid?
<SilverFox>
can you have gaseous diamond?
<GlassYuri>
you might not want to stand too close to anything that vaporizes diamond
<G-Mobile>
SilverFox: diamond is a solid form of carbon
<SilverFox>
Greys, yes, but a certain arrangement of carbon atoms
<SilverFox>
at what temperature does that arrangement get fucked
<G-Mobile>
By definition, liquid or gas would not qualify as solid, and therefore could not be diamond
<SilverFox>
diamond is an arrangement of carbon tho
<SilverFox>
so so long as it maintains that arrangement, it is diamond
<G-Mobile>
That arrangement is a solid
<G-Mobile>
You could have an aerosolized powder, not a gas
<G-Mobile>
I bet diamond powder would love to dust explosion
<SilverFox>
"Do this every night before bed and watch what follows next!" thanks clickbait title, but what you're telling me to do is assume a position that is used on infants to help aid bowel movements and gas.

<SilverFox>
so diamonds at high energy are a burnable resource?
