raptop changed the topic of #principia to: READ THE FAQ: http://goo.gl/gMZF9H; The current version is Galois. We currently target 1.8.1, and 1.9.1. <scott_manley> anyone that doubts the wisdom of retrograde bop needs to get the hell out | https://xkcd.com/323/ | <egg> calculating the influence of lamont on Pluto is a bit silly… | <egg> also 4e16 m * 2^-52 is uncomfortably large

Kitten Dispenser. — so it looks like i got insanely lucky
<discord->
Kitten Dispenser. — i might be able to get a close flyby of venus because of a lunar assist to change inclination and solar LAN
<discord->
Kitten Dispenser. — actually, i think i can do it without the lunar assist if i keep trying to find a solution to the transfer
<discord->
Kitten Dispenser. — question: in what way should i time my venus mission's launch?

<discord->
Kitten Dispenser. — should i make it so that the LAN is aligned with earth's tangent?
<discord->
Kitten Dispenser. — should i make it so that the parking orbit's LAN is aligned with earth's tangent? (edited)
<discord->
Kitten Dispenser. — should i make it so that the parking orbit's LAN is aligned with earth's tangent around the sun? (edited)
<discord->
Kitten Dispenser. — well, i figured out that i can launch this payload into a polar orbit... so that simplifies things
<discord->
Kitten Dispenser. — since i have no regard for human life, only regard for humanity's future in space, i'll be dropping my first stage on some poor Americans

Kitten Dispenser. — ok yeah i'm still struggling despite the polar parking orbit

Kitten Dispenser. — i can get a transfer to within a million km of venus, but not much closer
<discord->
Kitten Dispenser. — i'm trying to time the launch properly, which i think is the issue here
<discord->
Kitten Dispenser. — is that also the main factor for non-polar interplanetary launches? e.g. straight east from kennedy?
<discord->
Standecco. — what's the relation between matrices and quaternions? I read `Quaternion` everywhere but you're clearly talking about matrices
egg|laptop|egg has joined #principia
<discord->
egg. — @Standecco well, we are talking about rotations. Those are only matrices if you imbue your inner product spaces with orthonormal bases
<discord->
egg. — as for the unit quaternions, they are essentially the same thing as 2x2 complex matrices with the right properties (SU(2), see https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gruppo_unitario_speciale), and those form a double cover of SO(3)
<discord->
Zeusbeer. — Quaternions are scary to do algebraically
<discord->
Zeusbeer. — ijk
<discord->
Zeusbeer. — 👀
<discord->
Standecco. — @egg I feel like I'm not grasping part of the article due to my ignorance in group theory
<discord->
Zeusbeer. — are quaternions easier to compute for rotations than 3x3 rotatation matrices?
Jesin has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<discord->
lamont. — to first order you can use a quaternion just like a rotation matrix
<discord->
lamont. — they multiply by vectors to get vectors or by quaternions to get quaternions and they map to SO(3) so you can convert from/to rotations or euler angles or build them out of angle-axis represeantations. then mostly you can avoid having to care about the internal structure and just be happy they don't have gimbal lock.

<discord->
egg. — indeed; most of the time you really work with elements of SO(3), and what shape the specific pile of numbers you crunch has is irrelevant
<discord->
Kitten Dispenser. — i found a 3905 m/s solution for this transfer, which will leave me with very little margins
<discord->
Kitten Dispenser. — i found a 3905 m/s solution for this transfer, which will leave me with a very small margin in the transfer stage (edited)
<discord->
Zeusbeer. — SO(3) qu'est-ce que c'est que ça que c'est ???

<discord->
Ialdabaoth. — I have an old mod I was working on that never worked right, that it occurs to me might actually be doable with Principia as a dependency
<discord->
Ialdabaoth. — The mod is called Project Kardashev, and it's basically for building megastructures, moving planets out of their orbits with absurdly huge mass drivers, starlifting hydrogen to seed Venus's atmosphere, that sort of ridiculousness
