<queqiao-> ⟨Marsh⟩ The OS will use all available memory for caching purposes, so nothing is really wasted

<queqiao-> ⟨Starcatcher⟩ ⟪Kirk (He/Him)⟫ Let it use the memory. You paid for it, […] ⮪ My game would crash if I turn off the memory cleaning program
<queqiao-> ⟨Dulat⟩ What is memory cleaning program
<queqiao-> ⟨Dulat⟩ I am on Linux
<queqiao-> ⟨Dulat⟩ So sometimes I use sync and drop caches
<queqiao-> ⟨Marsh⟩ My understand is all of these memory cleaning programs are more or less worthless. Sure it removes stuff in memory but then it’s just going to get loaded back in… what you really need to do is uninstall the processes you don’t like that are taking up memory
<queqiao-> ⟨Kirk (He/Him)⟩ Yeah. Like I said, at best it's just forcing everything into a page file
<queqiao-> ⟨Marsh⟩ Modern OS’s do a huge amount of caching. It’s by design that it uses it all up. And because of how KSP and memory usage works, it will eventually need to be restarted. “Recovering” 10% of your physical memory won’t buy you much time compared to lower graphics settings or another stick of ram
<queqiao-> ⟨Marsh⟩ I remember this from like… 10 years ago. Are memory cleaners on phones still a thing? I remember so many people using those apps not realizing all its doing is slowing down the phone (and using battery) because it has to keep restarting these critical apps you keep shutting down
<paculino> Were those the ones that promised better battery life by shutting down "unnecesary" background stuff?
<queqiao-> ⟨Marsh⟩ That sounds pretty familiar
<queqiao-> ⟨Zeusbeer⟩ Ah yes
<queqiao-> ⟨Zeusbeer⟩ somehow it reset my bios settings though
<queqiao-> ⟨Marsh⟩ That’s kinda odd. I think some motherboards have bios reset buttons on them in case you change something and can’t post, so maybe when you installed the new memory you bumped that button

<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ ⟪Zeusbeer⟫ somehow it reset my bios settings though ⮪ if you turned off the power supply to add the RAM (and the CMOS battery on your motherboard hasn’t been changed in a long time) that could happen
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ (I got bit by that a couple of months ago, which was particularly annoying since the RAID configuration was lost; thankfully, backups…)
<queqiao-> ⟨Zeusbeer⟩ ⟪egg⟫ if you turned off the power supply to […] ⮪ That is exactly what happened then, I guess I will have to redo my slight overclock. But who installs ram with the power supply on 🤔
<raptop> For all we know, someone could be running KSP on a rack in a datacenter?
<queqiao-> ⟨Marsh⟩ ⟪Zeusbeer⟫ That is exactly what happened then, I […] ⮪ Nobody. The motherboard is powered so long as it’s plugged in.
<queqiao-> ⟨itsRyan⟩ Since you had overclock settings, if you had manual memory timings those might not have been compatible with the new memory preventing the machine from POSTing. After a couple of failed POSTs, the BIOS defaults would get restored.
