<queqiao-> ⟨jonpc042⟩ How do you figure out where to put a correction burn on an interplanetary trajectory?
<queqiao-> For example, I'm heading to Jupiter and I want to adjust my heading to flyby ganymede (for a gravity capture), but adjusting my heading where I'm currently at is prohibitively expensive.
<queqiao-> ⟨womby_⟩ I don't know if a gravity capture is possible in RSS
<queqiao-> ⟨womby_⟩ ganymede is big but it's not that big
<queqiao-> ⟨womby_⟩ compared to tylo (when adjusting for real scale) its tiny
<queqiao-> ⟨jonpc042⟩ Huh, did not know that
<raptop> Jool is a light Saturn orbited by 3 terrestrial planets (also Bop and Pol), while Jupiter... isn't
<queqiao-> ⟨jonpc042⟩ I've been told jupiter requires a relatively small amount of dV to capture at, though I'm not entirely sure how much exactly, so I assumed a gravity assist from a large moon would suffice
<queqiao-> ⟨jonpc042⟩ I'm on trajectory to flyby jupiter and have about 5.5km/s dV remaining, is this a reasonable budget for capturing and then completing a flyby of all of jupiter's moons?
<queqiao-> ⟨jonpc042⟩ This is a really hard question to answer with planners it seems
<queqiao-> ⟨womby_⟩ I mean if you just want to flyby probably

<queqiao-> ⟨Joshua Wood⟩ If you want to figure out where to put the correction burn I start at the sun AN/DN usually
<queqiao-> Add a few m/s of dv in the correct direction then use the time slider to move it around untill that amount of dv does the most work
<queqiao-> If it’s prograde/retrograde it’s usually ASAP is best

<queqiao-> ⟨butcher6994⟩ Possibly, you can capture for relatively little if you're ok with a very eccentric orbit. Then use gravity assists to modify your orbit
<queqiao-> ⟨butcher6994⟩ Saturn is easier in some ways due to Titan
<queqiao-> ⟨butcher6994⟩ This is Uranus but the same principle applies to Jupiter.

<queqiao-> ⟨clayel⟩ clipper is doing a capture iirc, although its into a highly eccentric orbit
<queqiao-> ⟨GoForPDI (less drag=more faster)⟩ iirc you have to capture into a highly eccentric orbit propulsively and then brake down using lots of gravity assists
<queqiao-> ⟨Joshua Wood⟩ probably helps having a whole team of people and months to plan all the assists haha
