<raptop>
yeah
<darsie>
Could a mod spawn arbitrary parts in 'flight'?
<packbart>
Possibly. Contracts do
<packbart>
or what are you looking for?
<darsie>
not sure. Just chatted with ChatGPT about self replicating machines ...
<darsie>
Maybe add a part to the game that requires resources to spawn parts.
<packbart>
GC or EL
<darsie>
hm?
<packbart>
GlobalConstructions and Extraplanetary Launchpads are mods that have parts "that requires resources to spawn parts". or whole vessels or subassemblies
<packbart>
possibly self-replicating
<packbart>
(although they need at least one egineer-in-a-can but that can be an internal can with all hatches obstructed :)
<packbart>
nothing a patch couldn't fix, though
<darsie>
:) An engineer is fine.
<darsie>
Yeah, a launch pad spawns rockets.
<Mat2ch>
Duplicating engineers should be possible with some of the habitat mods. :D
<darsie>
Engineers spawn all over the place.
<packbart>
I only ever built one ISRU base with an internal non-replaceable engineer
<Pinkbeast>
"For the love of God, Montresor!"
<packbart>
darsie: the main "problem" is that resources are infinite
<darsie>
Why is that a problem? We still need to extract them with a drill or so.
<packbart>
I could see how to script a vessel that drill for ore (add more converter chain if you want) and once it has a certain amount, makes a copy of itself that seeks out a new place to drill
<packbart>
but that will just spawn an infinite number, infi-eventually
<packbart>
Kerbin will not be consumed into computronium
<darsie>
Yeah, it might grow exponentially.
<darsie>
Exponential growth may be incompatible with circular growth.
<darsie>
But we don't need too many resources/parts.
<darsie>
Putting one replicator on every body might be too boring.
<darsie>
Hmm, maybe I could make a Tylo ground<->orbit shuttle with high TWR, refuelling on Tylo.
<darsie>
Hmm, I guess that would have to be two stage, like Starship.
<darsie>
Need a first stage landing mod.
<darsie>
kos automated :)
<Mat2ch>
Tylo is easy to do with one stage
<Mat2ch>
even without refueling
<Mat2ch>
Without the atmosphere it's just a matter of size
<darsie>
But a shuttle has to go to orbit and then land, too.
<Mat2ch>
Make it even bigger :D
<darsie>
It might require more stages, yes.
<darsie>
I wondered how realistic a generic orbit (or even deorbit) kos script would be. Calculating the ascent from the stage masses, fuel, engines.
<Izzy>
my "deorbit from station" script uses trajectories to aim a craft at the KSC using a node to lower the Pe to just above the atmosphere and another to drop it to 55000 once it's just above the atmosphere
<darsie>
Also a script for a fast ascent and dock with station would be cool :).
<darsie>
Like rendezvous with the station with the circularization burn.
<packbart>
MechJeb used to do that with "launch to rendezvous". I haven't tried it in a while
<Izzy>
I haven't got that but I have one that minimises the delay between circularisation and the transfer burn
<packbart>
I had a kRPC script for that. Launch with MechJeb, approach station, activate docking autopilot
<Izzy>
needs less precision on ascent
<Pinkbeast>
MechJeb isn't really doing deep analysis of the ship, though, it just assumes you built something capable
<packbart>
aye. parameter adjustments might be needed
