<FLHerne>
that is always my struggle with SSTOs, particularly ones I haven't tried before
<Althego>
and to get the angle right, you have to try several time. that must be the reason for the angle grinder
<Judge_DedD>
Interesting. It's been a while, so I might be remembering poorly, but it seemed pretty intuitive to me. But then again, I do spend most of my time messing around with SSTOs and other spaceplanes

<Judge_DedD>
Sounds like a long walk
<Mat2ch>
Judge_DedD: for SSTOs you usually want to get very fast to 10 km, but if you get there you want to go almost 300 m/s (around Mach 1) and then go flat and accelerate to 1200 m/s while climbing in a way that you reach it at 20 km up and then depending a bit on the craft pull slightly up for getting out of the atmosphere
<FLHerne>
this is loosely derived from a probably-apocryphal story about a sailor with an oar
<Judge_DedD>
!mission add Wouldn't it be great if your caravan could fly? You give it a go.
<LunchBot>
Added mission: Wouldn't it be great if your caravan could fly? You give it a go.
<Mat2ch>
that's basically it. But you can make a few mistakes. Not getting to 10 km fast enough, not going fast enough at 10 km, staying too long at 10 to 15 km, staying too long at 20 to 25 km before pulling up
<Judge_DedD>
Mat2ch, There's more than one way :)
<Mat2ch>
that's the air breathing one. You can go SSTO with a rocket, yes :P
<Judge_DedD>
My usual profile for an SSTO with an air-breathing engine differs somewhat from that
<Mat2ch>
And you can do a hybrid with air breathing engines, too. But if you want to be efficient you have to do the flight path I described.
<Mat2ch>
*hybrid in the sense as: Just use it to get off the ground and basically have a rocket strapped to you
<Mat2ch>
Then try my approach and see if it's better or worse. :)
<Mat2ch>
I've built a lot of SSTO planes (that's the important part here, planes!) and every single one of them I had to fly this way, otherwise I wouldn't go to orbit that day.
<Judge_DedD>
I've tried all sorts of approaches. Matt Lowne's "fly really fast at sea level" profile always costs me fuel
<Judge_DedD>
The best profile really depends on the type of engines you have and your TWR
<Mat2ch>
it would be nice to have a good autopilot in-game with some log function to try the best profiles
<Mat2ch>
(for a craft)
<Mat2ch>
and then compare them to different crafts.
<Mat2ch>
Matt Lowne overbuilts his SSTOs dramatically
<Judge_DedD>
True
<Althego>
some people said you can get better ascent with some sstos by diving a bit
<Althego>
it never worked out for me
<Althego>
skill issue before the phrase existed
<Judge_DedD>
I think my usual profile is to climb steeply up to an altitude where the lift starts dropping off, then levelling out and building up speed from there.
<Althego>
that is what i did
<Mat2ch>
the diving is to gain speed, but if you have to do it something else is wrong.
<Mat2ch>
Judge_DedD: Do you angle your wings upwards a bit?
<Judge_DedD>
In my mind, if I'm building up speed in the lower atmosphere and still have plenty of lift, I'm too low and am wasting fuel. Usually works out that way, too.
<Althego>
Mat2ch: do you mean angle of attack?
<Mat2ch>
yes
<Judge_DedD>
Mat2ch, not normally, no. Not since they added actual lift to the wings.
<Mat2ch>
And it has a name. Positive something
<Althego>
really powerful technique in ksp
King_Arthur has quit [Ping timeout: 190 seconds]
<Mat2ch>
it's done in real planes as well. So you have lift, but the body doesn't create drag
<Mat2ch>
It somewhat works in KSP, even though the lift simulation is very basic
<Judge_DedD>
I find the added drag negates the benefit at high speeds, but some craft work better with it for sure
<Althego>
still the nose can be several degrees off in a real airplane too
<Mat2ch>
Judge_DedD: you will be very high up, where the air is thin, when you are at high speeds ;)
<Judge_DedD>
Mat2ch, there is still a massive amount of drag up at 20k+ at hypersonic speeds
<Mat2ch>
Some of my crafts would fly a perfect profile right until switching to the rocket cycle just buy having them pointed prograde
<Mat2ch>
just because I put a slight positive AoA on the wings
<Judge_DedD>
Althego, if my nose isn't pointing in the same direction as the plane, I'll add a couple of degrees to the wings, yeah
<Mat2ch>
.oO( also don't add big wings to an SSTO. You are going fast, small wings produce enough lift )
<Judge_DedD>
I find fuel balance across the whole profile to be much more important to focus on.
<Judge_DedD>
Mat2ch, UNLESS you have a low TWR
<Judge_DedD>
But yeah - I only want enough wings to barely take off fully loaded
<Mat2ch>
If it's too low you will spend too much time in the atmosphere and burn too much fuel.
<Judge_DedD>
Mat2ch, and this is why SSTOs are the most fun part of the game :)
<Judge_DedD>
Well, spaceplanes in general
<Mat2ch>
if the game would handle launch/return to hangar cycles better.
<Judge_DedD>
What do you mean?
<Mat2ch>
everytime I return to the hangar the game gets slower.
<Mat2ch>
loading times increase, etc.
<Mat2ch>
up to a point where I have to restart KSP
<Judge_DedD>
Oh really?
<Mat2ch>
It got better over time. But they never fixed all of the memory leaks :(
<Judge_DedD>
I would like to be able to actually keep my plane and use the same one again rather than launch a copy of it, with it keeping little scorch marks etc over time
<Mat2ch>
and having to drive out with a repair group to, ehm, replace parts. :D
<Judge_DedD>
Yeah
<Judge_DedD>
I suppose I could taxi them to a refuelling station or something and keep them on the ground
<Mat2ch>

<Judge_DedD>
No scorch marks, but at least it would keep any damage
