SporkWitch: But - for the other oddities of kerbal spaceflight - their engineering is superb. Their engines light every time, their decouplers decouple. Things don't just fall off.
<SporkWitch>
i dispute the decouplers decoupling; i regular have to hit it an extra time to make it go off lol
<Pinkbeast>
Their space program would be perfect if it wasn't for the idiot who designs the rockets (the idiot looks very like me, hm)
<SporkWitch>
That's like the a-hole who's always drinking all my beer! He looks like me too!
<Pinkbeast>
Ah, that's the beer mugger, who when you go out for a quiet pint hits you over the head and takes all the money out of your wallet

Infinite reignitions, can plausibly deep throttle to <1% with no Isp loss at all, and bells rugged enough to land on. Kerbal engines are amazing

Mappa B 1 executes its mid course correction burn on the way to the Mün, with a Munar eclipse sweeping across Kerbin in the background. https://shadowkat.net/tmp/4fa8.jpg [cw ussr inspired flag]

wait, it is visible?
<Althego>
is it a mod?
<Izaya>
yeah
<Izaya>
I want to say it's PlanetShine but I could be wrong.
<Althego>
one annoying thing is, that in ksp, the eclipses are quite ocmmon, but nothing gets dark. you are just peacefully doing stuff in the sunshine, wait ,why is the charge running low? oh because sun is blocked, but cant see it

You code an IRC bot that spews random lines when prompted. All ends in failure when you find all of your scientists have been eating the propellant.

<Althego>
eating the propellant? rocket candy?
<Azander>
oookay. the first part of that is true. I did code an irc bot to spew random lines
<SporkWitch>
clearly NASA is responsible for how long KSP2 is taking https://xkcd.com/2204/ (dunno how i missed this one when it released, was pretty sure i was still following xkcd closely back then)
<Mat2ch>
Maybe you didn't and just don't remember. 3 comics a week for 2 years are around 300 comics you have to remember.
<darsie>
I don't fully get it.
<darsie>
could go to explain-xkcd ...
<SporkWitch>
true, but i'm usually pretty good about having a topical one handy for any situation lol. I've followed it religiously almost since the start (and at one point went backto catch up, which was much easier 20 years ago lol), though kind of stopped the last 5 or so
<SporkWitch>
darsie: needless to say, KSP is very popular at NASA. The comic is about the original planned release date of KSP2 and its alignment with the NASA missions planned for the same time window. They're talking to a KSP2 begging to push it back because of everyone calling out sick to play KSP2 on launch day
<SporkWitch>
*talking to a KSP2 dev
<darsie>
mhm. Why is the dev team offering NASA a moon?
<SporkWitch>
he's ignoring them and speaking to the KSP fans about how much of what's been stated for KSP2 is in direct response to what fans wanted
<SporkWitch>
basically exacerbating the problem the NASA characters are complaining about lol
<darsie>
hmm
<darsie>
:)
<darsie>
When is this launch window?
<SporkWitch>
this was the original planned release back in like 2020 or something
<SporkWitch>
(isn't the date in the comic or the mouseover text?)

I might need a better computer for KSP2.
<darsie>
now i7-3770, GeForce GTX 750 Ti, 16 GB RAM
<SporkWitch>
what are you running right now?
<SporkWitch>
GPU will probably be an issue even at low settings, yeah; i'd imagine the CPU and RAM sufficient, though not ideal.
<SporkWitch>
I'm fairly confident i'll be able to turn the settings down with my GTX1060 and be fine, but I also have CPU and RAM that are total overkill for literally anything for the next few years.

<Mat2ch>
oh well, how many generations of computers will we see before KSP2 lands?
<Mat2ch>
2? Even 3?
<SporkWitch>
still not even a rought release date byond "2022" so no way to know. Once we get at least quarter estimate, we can guess
<Pinkbeast>
I'm quite content with KSP1
<darsie>
I'm pretty much done with KSP1.
<darsie>
Haven't captured a huge comet, yet.
<Pinkbeast>

<darsie>
4 NERV comet pusher tends to be unstable.
<SporkWitch>
for me i'm mostly excited for the base-building and in-orbit construction. The mods on KSP1 are good, but not ideal, and very clunky to use. It just opens up so many options for creativity and missions.
<darsie>
RSS/RO/RP1 was a PITA again last I tried.

Hello Space friends,
<Guest39894>
i am a Kerbal noob and tried a mission to build an Akku 200 (Ring) on an old satelite in space. - I can fly to the satelite with an engineer, but how can assemble the akku?
<Guest39894>
Can you please help me?
<Pinkbeast>
Probably you want to dock or Klaw it on
<Guest39894>
Docking is not possible, because there is no port. Okay, i try the claw - thanks
<SporkWitch>
always a good idea to leave at lease one free docking port on anything you think you might possibly want to expand later or leave in space. They're cheap and light, so easy to add
<SporkWitch>
You can even use a docking port in staging, so you can use it to drop off the last engine
Althego has quit [Quit: HMI Module Alpha Humana on approach to Space Station Mercury]
<SporkWitch>
That can work, though it's not ideal for a permanent thing. Forget if it's a limitation of one of the mods I use, but you can't transfer fuel or personnel through a claw
<SporkWitch>
(some of my mods are to add some realism while keeping things fine, like not letting you move kerbals through pieces that you couldn't logically move through, and can't transfer items or fluids without a logical connecting path)
<darsie>
I thought engineers can put stuff on nearby vessles, don't need to connect them. Can also use EVA thrusters to get to it.
<SporkWitch>
yes and no. there are rules about weight and not all things can be stored. So you can reposition some non-storable things if they were already attached, and gravity allows for it.
<raptop>
In general, proper rings and structures with loops need docking ports to work
<SporkWitch>
I think you can put those in storage, but if not, you can definitely just mount it somewhere and use an engineer to reattach it where you want
<Guest39894>
with the engineer i can reattach parts to the satelite, when it is connected through a claw. Right?
<SporkWitch>
technically you don't need to connect it, but it will make life easier since you don't need to worry about them drifting apart while you're working.
<Guest39894>
how far away can i working without connecting?
<Pinkbeast>
Coo, vanilla KAS, I forgot that existed now
<SporkWitch>
yeah, forget when they added it
<raptop>
Looks like it was added in 1.11 (2020-12-17)
<SporkWitch>
still REALLY clunky, but hey, it's there. Why I'm hopefully that they really smooth the interface and interaction for orbital and base construction in KSP2 (remember a few months ago when I was using UKS and whatnot and the "expansion" phase of doing the addition made the physics go crazy and spun the station apart? lol)
Guest39894 has quit [Quit: webchat.esper.net]
<Pinkbeast>
I'm still in 1.9
<raptop>
For RSS purposes?
<Pinkbeast>
No, just the overall way that if you play KSP intermittently and keep updating you basically spend all your time fiddling with your mod set
<Pinkbeast>
I guess now 1.12 is officially Final I could take that step
<Azander>
any word on KSP2 ? or is it till "when we get it done" ?
<sandbox>
done when it's done
<darsie>
It'll be done 10x faster than fusion power.
