You commission a combination memorial obelisk/space elevator. In the ensuing investigation, you maintain that that mountain, quote, "came out of freaking nowhere."
<raptop>
Oh, yeah, the memorial obelisk lore
<raptop>
The idea being that it gets taller and taller as kerbals die and their names are added to it. So eventually it becomes tall enough to use as a space elevator.
<LunchBot>
The Lord of Boosters shall perish, but in his doom he shall spawn a score of kerbal progeny. Chaos will be sewn from their passage. The hatch is obscured.

You send Stalin Kerman to Duna to colonise a red planet. As you move from LKO to KEO your space ship gains potential energy and you wonder if that increases its mass, too, because E=mc^2.

Assuming a) no Breaking Ground propellors and b) that kerbals are to go to orbit in pods not external command seats, any idea roughly what the minimum weight for a 3-kerbal Eve ascent vehicle would be and how to go about building one?
<Pinkbeast>
(I have a c. 100t multi-stage plane-to-rocket design which works assuming nothing goes wrong. Something usually goes wrong.)

For seasonal reasons, you adjust your clock by one (1) hour. This unsurprisingly causes a resonance cascade.
<Mat2ch>
FLHerne: Hm, when it's getting a bit colder again, I can give you a craft file of a working one
<Pinkbeast>
I tried that (separatrons), and the Space-Y rocket decouplers. I have invented a wide range of ways the discarded section can bump the next stage off course! The frontiers of science are being pushed back!
<Pinkbeast>
flying upside down> that's an interesting idea but I suspect the discarded stage will then immediately pitch up and etc
<SporkWitch>
i kind of want to see this rocket now; i've never really had issues with separation as long as i got my staging right and positioned things properly
<Mat2ch>
FLHerne: the trick is to gain speed in the lower parts. You start out pretty level until you reach Mach 1, then climb slowly. You should be at Mach 3 at 10 km height. Then go almost flat and accelerate further. When you reach 20 km you should be at 1200 to 1300 m/s. Now glide up until the engines don't produce thrust anymore and use something rocket powered for the last few m/s.
<Pinkbeast>
SporkWitch: Not at the games machine, but the basic problem is the rocket stage is on top of, even slightly behind, the plane; this means it can get _down_ onto Eve using the heat tolerance of the spaceplane parts on the belly. So there's a lot of scope for the discarded stage to collect the rocket stage.
