<LunchBot> You commission a combination memorial obelisk/space elevator. In the ensuing investigation, you maintain that that mountain, quote, "came out of freaking nowhere."
<raptop> Oh, yeah, the memorial obelisk lore
<raptop> The idea being that it gets taller and taller as kerbals die and their names are added to it. So eventually it becomes tall enough to use as a space elevator.

<Pinkbeast> Assuming a) no Breaking Ground propellors and b) that kerbals are to go to orbit in pods not external command seats, any idea roughly what the minimum weight for a 3-kerbal Eve ascent vehicle would be and how to go about building one?
<Pinkbeast> (I have a c. 100t multi-stage plane-to-rocket design which works assuming nothing goes wrong. Something usually goes wrong.)

<FLHerne> Pinkbeast: That sounds pretty good tbh, excluding things in the category of weird physics hacks
<Pinkbeast> FLHerne: Well, ideally it would be less prone to going wrong

<LunchBot> You skim Jool's atmosphere. Danny2462 thinks you're crazy.
<Mat2ch> Crazy for not trying to land on Jool!
<FLHerne> most of the entries in "lightest EAV" threads seem to be wide-but-short rockets with lots of radial asparagus staging
<FLHerne> and Vectors
<FLHerne> "something usually goes wrong" would describe any of my attempts at spaceplanes, I never did master flying them
<flayer> i got one using panthers and cheetahs that's surprisingly good
<flayer> and my panther based vtol science jet works surprisingly well too
<funkenstein> ;mission
<LunchBot> For seasonal reasons, you adjust your clock by one (1) hour. This unsurprisingly causes a resonance cascade.
<Mat2ch> FLHerne: Hm, when it's getting a bit colder again, I can give you a craft file of a working one
<cringe> hmm, no detailed ethos
<cringe> nice to see some data coming down tho
<Althego> there is urine tank level :9
<cringe> hmm, hasn't loaded for me
<cringe> some data is better tha no data at all, i'll take that as a good sign of things to come
<Althego> you have to wait for a while to get everything
<Althego> i guess it updates as data is coming in
<cringe> at least these folks have a trello and a slack where i could go bug em
<Althego> hehe
<Althego> heh it could cache the data server side
<Althego> so at least there is something if there was no update yet
<Althego> but irone tank was 15%
<cringe> bookmarks updated, cheers
<cringe> excited to see someone doing something
<FLHerne> Mat2ch: I mean, I've built plenty of spaceplanes that *work*, often with plenty of performance margin (single-stage to Minmus, say)
<FLHerne> it's just that I'm terrible at flying them, so half the time I get stuck in that not-making-progress zone about 20km altitude
<FLHerne> or just flip and crash :p
<Pinkbeast> Atmosphere Autopilot will fly almost anything, but the transition from spaceplane to rocket often gets exciting
Ezriilc has joined #KSPOfficial
<Pinkbeast> . o O (actually maybe kOS can stop the discarded section immediately pitching up and hitting the rocket)
<SporkWitch> separatrons are your friend
<taniwha> or you could try flying upside down
<SporkWitch> lol
<Pinkbeast> I tried that (separatrons), and the Space-Y rocket decouplers. I have invented a wide range of ways the discarded section can bump the next stage off course! The frontiers of science are being pushed back!
<Pinkbeast> flying upside down> that's an interesting idea but I suspect the discarded stage will then immediately pitch up and etc
<SporkWitch> i kind of want to see this rocket now; i've never really had issues with separation as long as i got my staging right and positioned things properly
<taniwha> as for seperatrons: https://taniwha.org/~bill/screenshot3124.png
<Mat2ch> FLHerne: the trick is to gain speed in the lower parts. You start out pretty level until you reach Mach 1, then climb slowly. You should be at Mach 3 at 10 km height. Then go almost flat and accelerate further. When you reach 20 km you should be at 1200 to 1300 m/s. Now glide up until the engines don't produce thrust anymore and use something rocket powered for the last few m/s.
<Pinkbeast> SporkWitch: Not at the games machine, but the basic problem is the rocket stage is on top of, even slightly behind, the plane; this means it can get _down_ onto Eve using the heat tolerance of the spaceplane parts on the belly. So there's a lot of scope for the discarded stage to collect the rocket stage.
