* raptop is vaguely hoping that debdeb ends up being more like 1e15 m than 4e16 m because that would make an interstellar flyby with the Dawn take a reasonable amount of time
<raptop> Or, at 100 km/s, you can cover the former in 317 years (so not to excessive if there's an extra step or 2 of timewarp). The latter is 12675 years, though
<Funkenstein> The Dawn?
<raptop> The (KSP1) ion engine
<raptop> If you're willing to commit to a super-minimal paylod (1 kerbal), a single stage craft with ~20-30 km/s will mass under 5 tonnes
Wastl2 has joined #KSPOfficial
<raptop> So you put together a 2 or 3 stage design, and execute the closest kerbol flyby you can. While the periapsis burn time is measured in hours, you'll spend it quite close-in, so get a good Oberth boost. And that's 100 km/s hyperbolic excess.
<raptop> Maybe considerably more

<darsie> Class E comet: https://0x0.st/Hsin.png
<darsie> With name and tails.
<Althego> nice
<Mat2ch> Nice!
<darsie> Yeah, even class E comets are limited. Only one shows up with just the tracking station and up to two at a time with one ore more IR telescopes.
<darsie> I mean, even class E comets limit the appearence of comets.
<darsie> Most class E objects are asteroids, though.
<SporkWitch> darsie: that stock? I've never actually seen one stock, though I know they exist, since there are missions to detect them.
<darsie> Yes, but might come from the expansion packs, idk.
<darsie> Easy way to find them is to turn off any IR telescopes you have and wait in the tracking station for an object off the main asteroid cloud.
<darsie> at 100k warp.
<darsie> IR telescope below Kerbin orbit is ok.
<darsie> But further out the asteroid clouds are so scattered that comets may show up within them.

<darsie> I'm waiting for a class I comet. Those are always on Kerbol escape trajectories. Class H, too, sometimes.

<darsie> I'm afraid class I comets maybe can only befound with the tracking station and thus near the Kerbol.
<SporkWitch> Deddly: why is discord full of concentrated dumb? lol

<Althego> concentrated dumb, because discord is easy to access, so everybody is there. irc is harder, although it is not hard at all, so filters people somwhat
<SporkWitch> it was largely rhetorical; the ignorance and trolling over the specs is tedious
<Mat2ch> Every generation deserves their hell hole :D
<raptop> As best I can tell a lot of discussion around games is that there's something like compiling with optimization? o_O
<packbart> I'm on a number of discord "servers" but I rarely look at them. I shall add the Official KSP one, too
<packbart> "Several people are typing..."
<packbart> raptop: Optimizations in games are a myth ;)
<Mat2ch> Hey, I made one post in the forum recently. Just a "please consider this" and got lots of stupid answers. The world is a hell hole :P
<packbart> otoh, FDev released their Elite Dangerous Odyssey with a promise of "it runs fine on Lord Braben's old PC"
<packbart> increasing the minimum requirements for the alpha release is not too bad an idea, I think
<packbart> hm. is "upping" really a word?
<Althego> seems legit
<umaxtu> do we know what framerate those specs are targeting?
<Althego> there is optimization in games. they at least compile with O :)
<packbart> isn't KSP traditionally measured in spf instead? :)
<Althego> and i remember the story that the large tentacle in dead space almost broke game development because they needed to focus every resource to solve the problem of it rendering without the game becoming unplayable
<SporkWitch> umaxtu: i don't believe they've said, but I would assume 60, given that the people that whine most vocally rage over anything less. It's probably a component of why they set the minimum where it did: conservative, to silence the idiots with potatoes that refuse to tweak their settings for their hardware, then blame the game for poor performance.
<umaxtu> thats kinda what I figured as well
<umaxtu> will be interesting to see how my 3070 does at 1440p
<SporkWitch> i also doubt they even tested anything older than a 2060; why would you? 20-series is two full generations behind current, and the 2060 is the bottom-end of that generation
<SporkWitch> i'm running a strix 3080, so slightly above the recommended for that, and ryzen 9 3950x is well above the recommended CPU
<SporkWitch> (though will only really shine if they've really stepped up their multicore performance, but it sounds like they have)
<umaxtu> 5900X for me with a Founders edition 3070
<packbart> I don't even remember what CPU this thing got. ah, Ryzen 5 3600
<packbart> I reasoned that I'd upgrade the CPU long before I replace the 2080S
<packbart> and of course I'll run it at 1440 with ultra settings and complain on the discord! :)
<packbart> I might try to run it on the old laptop and see what happens
<umaxtu> remember when it used to be cool that crisis couldn't run well on the top-end hardware when it was released?
<packbart> I vaguely remember. I neither played Crisis nor did I have even high-end hardware at the time
<packbart> ED Odyssey on release day couldn't run well on Twitch streamer's top-end gear. That I remember
<packbart> we
<packbart> err. we'll see how KSP 2 does :)
<packbart> I seem to remember something similar about Cyperpunk (didn't play or watch it). Or was that mostly about bugs? anyway, it seems to be a theme with game releases
<SporkWitch> cyberpunk was mostly bug issues, on PC. PS4 had crippling performance issues that resulted in refunds being issued and the game being (temporarily?) removed from the PSN store
<SporkWitch> That said, it was perfectly playable for me at launch on a GTX1060, just had to tweak settings.
<Althego> there should be a law that once you release a game, you are not allowed to patch it for a mont
<Althego> h
<Althego> then companies cant push out bugged nightmares
<packbart> or just accept The Month of Howling
