<packbart> "I suggest putting one or two R.A.P.I.E.Rs upside-down as low as you can -- they will lower your CoM. If it gets below the ground, it will prevent thr rover from flipping in nearly all cases." - huh. that's a trick.
<packbart> I rarely use these engines but I remember that thei CoM is offset far from the part because it's supposed to have a long hidden turbine
<darsie> .
<darsie> In the front is a compressor, then comes the combustion chamber, then the turbine.
<packbart> the part only models the nozzle, though, does it?
<darsie> idk
<darsie> Haven't looked inside.
<darsie> But from what you quoted it seems so.
<packbart> hm. well, anyway. I just never thought of putting one of these inside a rover to push its CoM into the ground :)
<Mat2ch> I wished they would let us place intakes, turbines, outlets and ducts for the engine. Would be so much fun
<darsie> Do reversed intakes work?
<darsie> works
heinz9 has joined #KSPOfficial
<darsie> Flies like a champ: https://0x0.st/HzAk.png
<Mat2ch> that shouldn't work. But the turbine might be strong enough to pull in the air from behind ;)
<packbart> "Intake air collected varies proportionally with speed and inversely with altitude. Intakes cause the same amount of drag whether open or closed." - well, it doesn't say that they need to point forward :)
<darsie> I though dihedral would stabilize an aircraft, but it doesn't work here.
<darsie> thought

<FLHerne> this is a really awesome feature https://twitter.com/DJSnM/status/1630655264759377920

<packbart> if you pipe enough intake air from somewhere
<darsie> There's some air in engines or intakes.
<darsie> very little

<Mat2ch> The clouds from orbit look weird. But I don't know how they usually look.
<Mat2ch> Otherwise very neat!
<Mat2ch> I love the forest.
Ezriilc has joined #KSPOfficial
<packbart> yeah, the cloudy cottage cheese is a bit odd
<SporkWitch> they definitely look worse from orbit than while flying in atmo; i think they'd benefit from just turning them off once you reach a certain altitude and use a different method that's both easier and looks better; no need to do volumetric clouds while in orbit

<darsie> hi Guest60800
<Guest60800> hello there
<darsie> Guest60800: You can get a nickname that's easier for us to type and distinguish by typing /nick Massimilla
Guest60800 is now known as Massimilla
<darsie> hi Massimilla
<darsie> :)
<Massimilla> Hello there
<darsie> I circumnavigated Kerbin in 44 minutes with this shocking airplane: http://0x0.st/HzBc.png
<packbart> just a Rapier on a shock cone?
<darsie> kinda
<darsie> There's a half full fuel tank, too.
<darsie> In the cargo bay is a battery, an okto2 and a small RW.
<darsie> small control surfaces, too.
<darsie> A structural tube for balance.
<darsie> I braked by pulling up and rolling.
<FLHerne> Does that have enough fuel?!
<darsie> yes
<darsie> 200
<darsie> Doesn't need much at 25 km.
<FLHerne> I'm surprised, Rapiers seem pretty hungry normally
<FLHerne> hm
<Massimilla> Rapiers are much more efficient for high-altitude aircrafts
<darsie> 0.02 LF/s
<SporkWitch> i only used them on one flight, but they definitely devoured fuel, even in air-breathing mode
<darsie> I stayed subsonic at low altitudes.
<darsie> This one is called fast 3. 1720 m/s cruise speed.
<darsie> There's significant centripetal force.
<darsie> Can we see how much air we have?
<darsie> If you don't fly high enough when going fast, the shock cone can explode.
<darsie> Or maybe it's because you can fly faster when there's a bit more air.
Massimilla has quit [Quit: webchat.esper.net]
<packbart> you might just exceed its temperature rating
<darsie> exactly
<packbart> so, put a heatshield in front of it ;)
<darsie> hehe
<darsie> I tried a radiator, but then realized I jsut need to go higher.
<darsie> Maybe I could be faster with a radiator and going a bit lower.
<X> I always thought you can go faster higher up.... is it a lack of air for the intake that makes you faster lower?
<raptop> some sort of tradeoff in terms of intake air, speed, and drag
<packbart> the engines lose thrust above a certain altitude, too
<darsie> It's more air that makes you go faster.
<darsie> Because your enigen gets more thrust.
<raptop> uh, at least for the subsonic engines, thrust is greatest at sea level
<raptop> though yeah, there's also the velocity curve
<darsie> X: Deep down in the atmosphere drag dominates.
<darsie> But you get most thrust there. And most fuel consumption.
<darsie> Enough thrust for VTOL.

<XXCoder> ;mission
<LunchBot> Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to return Jebediah from the surface of the Mun. All space center personnel suddenly start speaking Finnish.
<XXCoder> I broke physics so hard it bent all their brains
<Althego> hehe
<raptop> The real reason for space exploration: finally getting enough distance from the other kerbals
<Althego> the finnish speaking kerbals
<XXCoder> lol
<darsie> I played the sound from the Astronaut Complex and it wasn't forward Spanish. It sounded reverse.
<Althego> as it should be
<darsie> But I read Kerbals speak reverse Spanish.
<darsie> So reversing Kerbal should be Spanish.
<XXCoder> is it on sentance basis or word basis?
<Althego> yes. and you said you heard reverse
<darsie> I reversed Kerbal and it didn't sound like forward Spanish.
<XXCoder> ie is it "it is cool" in reverse (looc si ti) or word based (ti si looc)
<darsie> I don't speak Spanish.
<XXCoder> well yeah im just bringing up a possibilty :)
<raptop> Hrm, how different is es-MX from es-ES?
<darsie> It was like 'tea' reversed is aet.
<raptop> (...or I guess es-US)
<darsie> The laughing was weird, too.
<packbart> I'm more used to the Chatterer clips and they're heavily mangled sounds from NASA and russian signal archives
