Hi!
<UmbralRaptor>
Lo
<Ellied>
bofh: SMART value 5 (Reallocated_Sector_Ct) has a raw value of 0 but says FAILING_NOW. what happen?
<bofh>
LOL THE HELL?
<bofh>
um, buggy smartctl?
<Ellied>
it's a TroubleStar, as you said earlier
<bofh>
I'm not sure how the hell you can have a status of FAILING_NOW for ReallocatedSectorCt if it's zero, the status is derived from the value
<Ellied>
the raw value of 1 (Raw_Read_Error_Rate) is huge (~10⁷)
<bofh>
uh
<bofh>
yeah that's not good
<bofh>
what are the raw vals of 18x?
<Ellied>
doesn't seem to have any attributes between 12 and 191
<Ellied>
it was giving me lots of READ FPDMA QUEUED and WRITE FPDMA QUEUED (the latter triggers remounting read-only in ext4 apparently, so it makes the Debian installer fail)

I think this disk is shot
<Ellied>
oh nice clock
<bofh>
ugh, why do people still install RS-232 level converters when it's honestly far easier to find TTL-level serial ports nowadays
<bofh>
also yeah that disk is dedrip
<Ellied>
I read "oscilloscope clock" and thought that meant sampling/triggering clock or something
<Ellied>
TTL serial ports are more common than proper RS-232 ones?
<Ellied>
I should test the one on this old Dell. I know my Toughbook's runs at true RS-232 levels
<Ellied>
they have no trouble talking to each other which might already answer my question

Ellied: I have one machine w/hardware RS-232, meanwhile I have dones of FTDI-knockoff and pl2302 USB<->TTL-serial cables as well as a bunch of ARM boards with hardware TTL serial boards.
<bofh>
(and that one machine w/hardware RS-232 is an Alpha, amusingly enough)
<Ellied>
so I tweeted about the joule thief circuit I built requiring very low coupling between the inductors, so much so that they could be on opposite sides of a small board
<Ellied>
I'm pretty sure now that they don't need any coupling at all in some operating mode or other
<Ellied>
I've managed to make it so that they're reverse-coupled and it doesn't work when they're close together, but then it starts working when I move them apart
<Ellied>
I tried using a shielded inductor like 10cm away and it still worked 0.o
<Iskierka>
Ellied casually breaking physics and turning maxwell in his grave?
<bofh>
Ellied: so like in the two-inductor joule thief designs there basically is zero need for coupling of inductors
