If I measure the Off-resistance, should it not be infinite for source to drain, and big but not infinite for drain to source? Because of the diode?

How come? I just randomly took the center pin of this MOSFET because I am confused now. Then I measured resistance between the center and the left and right respectively and it was both around 16 MOhm
<soundnfury>
APlayer: uh, with nothing on the gate the channel should be totally depleted and insulating, in both directions, shouldn't it?
<APlayer>
Let's assume the pinout can be any
<APlayer>
So I may have hit either one, the gate, source or drain
<APlayer>
Is it still possible?
icefire has joined #kspacademia
<soundnfury>
APlayer: So, the gate is _always_ insulating, and the channel (Rds) is either insulating or conducting depending on (I think) Vgs
<APlayer>
So something is wrong here
<APlayer>
Let me look if I screwed up the soldering (shouldn't have...)

soundnfury: with nothing on the gate, it could potentially have any amount of charge stuck to it, and it will always behave like a diode from s to d unless it's a four-terminal MOSFET (unlikely)
<Ellied>
if you pinch all three leads together with your fingers, you've probably made Vgs ~0, so then it should conduct from s to d but not d to s
<Ellied>
that is, just touch all three leads, not make them touch each other
<BPlayer>
It's all currently soldered onto the prefboard
<BPlayer>
I can't make them touch together, I just try to probe it using a multimeter
<BPlayer>
Actually thinking of removing all of the parts from the prefboard and start over, will also likely do a cleaner soldering job
<BPlayer>
But I am /close/ to making it work, it's really just some weird stuff with this MOSFET
<BPlayer>
Also, yeah, S to D only, when off
<soundnfury>
Ellied: hunh, okay
* soundnfury
defers to the expert
<BPlayer>
(Meanwhile, the prefboard looks pretty broken from the sheer amount of soldering and re-soldering I've done
<BPlayer>
)
<Ellied>
I'm annoyed by the lack of four-terminal MOSFETs available, but I guess they just really aren't practical to make
<Ellied>
I mean hell, packages with metal tabs still have those attached to the *drain* of all frustrating things

<BPlayer>
Ellied: Is there a way to definitely say if the MOSFET is working and determine the pinout if it is using a multimeter and a power supply?
<Ellied>
It would be easier with an LED. Got one to hand? (the answer is still yes if not)
<BPlayer>
Well, I do have one, but I am not currently handling the parts
<BPlayer>
Would note down whatever you say and try it on the weekend or so
<Ellied>
okay
<BPlayer>
s/one/a whole damn lot of those/
<Qboid>
BPlayer meant to say: Well, I do have a whole damn lot of those, but I am not currently handling the parts
<Ellied>
so for the P channel, put the source in the positive supply, the gate to the source, and the drain to the LED (and resistor) to ground; the LED should *not* light. Then take the gate and move it to ground; the LED should now light.
<BPlayer>
Okay
<BPlayer>
(Why is a LED better than a multimeter, though?
<Ellied>
I like it cause it's more tangible and is a more realistic load
<BPlayer>
Also, I don't currently have safe pinout data
<BPlayer>
I can't trust that, because the MOSFETs behaviour just makes no sense (much rather, I am confused, but I still can't make sense of it)
<Ellied>
if the LED lights in the first part, switch the ones you think are drain and source. If it doesn't light in either part, switch gate and source. rinse, repeat.
