egg changed the topic of #principia to: READ THE FAQ: http://goo.gl/gMZF9H; The current version is Гельфонд. We currently target 1.8.1, 1.9.1, and 1.10.1. <scott_manley> anyone that doubts the wisdom of retrograde bop needs to get the hell out | https://xkcd.com/323/ | <egg> calculating the influence of lamont on Pluto is a bit silly… | <egg> also 4e16 m * 2^-52 is uncomfortably large

CaptainKeeble. — is it normal that a circulation burn at Venus would take around 10k dV?

CaptainKeeble. — is it normal that a circularization burn at Venus would take around 10k dV? (edited)

lpg. — not with a reasonable transfer
<raptop>
Circularizing at what altitude?
<discord->
lpg. — with a bad one, sure
<raptop>
(or sma, whatever)
<discord->
CaptainKeeble. — at 400km
<discord->
CaptainKeeble. — and i wanted to make the Ap 60,000 km
<discord->
CaptainKeeble. — idk, it might of not of been a good transfer
<discord->
lpg. — my last venus mission was nearly ruined because at the same departure time there were two transfers available, one ~20d faster than the other, but arriving with something like 3km/s extra velocity (so needing ~7km/s to circularize low instead of ~4km). Never even noticed and took the wrong one
<discord->
CaptainKeeble. — i dont really know how i would get a good transfer
<discord->
CaptainKeeble. — any tips?
<discord->
lpg. — I _normally use mechjeb's advanced transfer planner to get a ballpark, so I can tell if the flight plan I come up with is the "right" one. (evidently I was neglectful that time)

CaptainKeeble. — i was gonna do that but idk if it would of worked
<discord->
CaptainKeeble. — now should i set the plotting frame to the Sun? So it looks more like stock KSP?
<discord->
CaptainKeeble. — or is a bit easier
* raptop
puts entirely too much effort into a spreadsheet, and gets that in patched conic Hohmann transfer land, circularizing around Venus should only take 3247 m/s
<raptop>
(at 400 km altitude)
<discord->
Paculino (ŝi/ri/she/they). — It isn't too much effort until the spreadsheet is more accurate than Principia
<raptop>
I suppose with appropriate effort, one could try to capture worst case eccentricity effects

Stonesmile. — Would there be a good reason to analyse the orbit before the last manoeuvre? I lean towards no (mostly because of tax forms)
<discord->
egg. — for internal purposes in the future (anchoring the manœuvre, +1 orbit, etc.), for the purposes of a short description (shown in the screenshot), yes ; having the full analyser seems confusing, in particular it seems hard to figure out whether you want to look at the analysis of coast #6 or of the final trajectory
<discord->
Stonesmile. — The example I can think of right now is minimum altitude, for example a phasing orbit in low lunar orbit, where you might have the phasing before the last planned manoeuvre and might tweak it into the ground
<discord->
egg. — yeah that’s not orbit analysis, that’s « do I run into the ground in the limited timeframe I’m looking at » ; another problem with full analysis before the end is that I actually extend the trajectory to analyse partial orbits (what orbit would you be on if the next manœuvre didn’t happen), which is incompatible with « do I run into the ground » questions (you might run into t
<discord->
Stonesmile. — Yeah, the full analysis is indeed not needed, the way it's implemented in the pic above looks good 😀

lpg. — Was support for CoMOffset ever added to the preservation-of-angular-momentum feature?
