Off topic, have you guys seen that new mod "The World Beyond - 100 new celestial bodies"? Adds many new solar systems.

<Rokker>
Bornholio: no, thats the cockpit for the NB-36H
<Rokker>
11 tons of lead lined beauty
<Bornholio>
yet at that time they already knew the polyethelyne was more effective by weight

Bornholio: in the early 50s?
<Bornholio>
figured out borated versions of it into the 60's

Bornholio: ive read this 5 times and i dont know what the hell it is saying
<Rokker>
The original B-36 was powered by six Pratt & Whitney 3600 hp, R4360-53 radial piston engines, supplemented by four General Electric 13,500 lb thrust J47-19 turbojets. After conversion, the engines were removed and a new configuration was incorporated. The NB-36 now had four GE J47 nuclear converted piston engines generating 3,800 hp augmented by four 23.13 kn turbojets generating 5,200 lbs of thrust. Each of the engines utilized the
<Rokker>
Direct-Cycle Configuration for power conversion. The NB-36 was designed from the beginning, to be propelled to the air with a conventional chemical mixture, and then the crew would switch on the reactor after achieving the necessary heat requirements on its core. On landing approaches, the aircraft would switch back to chemical mixture. This procedure was implemented in order to minimize the possibility of a major radiation leak in case of a

crash landing.

<Bornholio>
in operation the nuclear engine are high radiation emmittors, primarly nuetron. so turn them off and lock the rods when your landing to reduce crashes causing meltdowns
<Bornholio>
of course the best place to put the shielding in the long run is close to the reactor, placing the crew in the "shadow". only problem is that they didn't know how to have a high temp shadow shield until the rover program
<Rokker>
Bornholio: yes i understood that part
<Bornholio>
as for the piston engines, they could switch to normal av gas operation
<Rokker>
i mean more about the engines
<Rokker>
it literally makes no sense
<Rokker>
what they are saying
<Rokker>
at all
<Bornholio>
why not
<Rokker>
well for one they call the J47 piston engines
<Bornholio>
inject hot gas from reactor or burninate av gas in pistons, just a messed up carbuerator either way
<Rokker>
Bornholio: they are saying that the NB-36H now had 8 J47s, and 4 of those J47s were piston engines
<Rokker>
somehow
<Bornholio>
yeah dual input
<Rokker>
Bornholio: ...
<Bornholio>
kind of like CODAG naval engines
<Rokker>
but thats not true
<Rokker>
at all
<Rokker>
the NB-36H, like all B-36Ds and up had 4 J47s, which are jet engines, not piston like the paragraph says, and 6 PW R-4360s
<Rokker>
they are saying the NB-36H was powered by 4x J47 PISTON ENGINES which were somehow nuclear converted, as well as 4 augmenting turbojets, which were also J47s, but turbojets
<Bornholio>
did you see no new huey for a while
<Rokker>
bring back the old huey
<Rokker>
Bornholio: Did you see that in the Louis News?
<Rokker>
Huey Louis News
<Bornholio>
also eagles not getting new eyeballs , lol no
<Rokker>
air force is asking for a procurement budget for COIN again
<Rokker>
said they will be making a decision soon
<Rokker>
dunno who im rooting for in that one
<Bornholio>
link?
<Rokker>
y'know its funny, the air force had some perfect COIN aircraft, and they ditched them all after nam
<Rokker>
the Bronco would deal with ISIS just fine
<Bornholio>
J's
<Rokker>
Bornholio: Marines want 100 million for it an USAF wants 350. lemme find the news article i read
<Rokker>
or at least thats what senators are asking for
<Rokker>
Bornholio: thats, what one to two dozen of the OA-X competitors
<Bornholio>
how much does a supatuc cost?
<Rokker>
like 10 to 15?
<Rokker>
9 to 14
<Rokker>
so close
<Bornholio>
main problem i have is operational range, they take a lot of support for the capability
<Rokker>
Bornholio: like 80 if they go with the tried and true AT-6
<Rokker>
which is 4.2 a unit
<Bornholio>
I want a proper OA-10 replacement myself
<Rokker>
I just want an OV-10
<Rokker>
Bornholio: A-67 and AT-6 seem like the most economical options
<Rokker>
at the 4-5 million mark
<Rokker>
of course super tocano might have a bulk discount
<Bornholio>
plus the support of a herc for each 4 of them :P
<Rokker>
the scorpion is almost definitely not in the running
<Rokker>
cause the scorpion is, what, 20 mil?
<Rokker>
here marines, you get 5
<Rokker>
Bornholio: It will be interesting to see how they split them up from an organizational standpoint
<Rokker>
boeing has indicated they might bring back the OV-10X
<Rokker>
12 hellfires could certainly help on a battlefield
<Bornholio>
scorpion aleast has a long enough ferry range for some good
<Rokker>
yeah but that cost man
<Bornholio>
quite a bit more capabiltiy than a super tuc for not much more
<Rokker>
wait what
<Rokker>
Bornholio: OA-X is only for pilot training not combat?
<Rokker>
they only want 15 planes?
<Rokker>
when the hell did this happen
<Bornholio>
?
<Rokker>
apparently i missed a lot of the LAAR competition
<Rokker>
its down to just AT-6 and super tocano
<Rokker>
and they only want 15 aircraft for training pilots
<Bornholio>
the probably want to push "allies" to support CAS/COIN using them instead of uss flying and supporting heavy craft. so we offer training and need our SF to train with them also
