<taniwha> Bornholio: I do
<taniwha> (joysticks)
<taniwha> mind you, using my own mod that is currently linux-only
<Bornholio> thought so. do you have a link you care to share
<taniwha> hang on
<Bornholio> duh i should have just rolled to git :)
<taniwha> :)
<taniwha> it's still very rough (the ui is debug-only atm, config is done by editing cfg files)
<Bornholio> I saw a ui based mod earlier but had not the time to check it out yet

<BadRocketsCo> Howdy!
<BadRocketsCo> So, I have wondered
<BadRocketsCo> Is there actualy any benefit to using NERVAs instead of J2 type stuff
<BadRocketsCo> I mean, NERVAS have a high ISP and all but they are so heavy that to me it just seems like that renders the high ISP useless, since the dV will stay minituare thanks to the weight
<BadRocketsCo> And really low thrust, too
<Bornholio> even the crappy nerva would have nearly doublesd mass to orbit of the saturn V
<Bornholio> unfortunately there is not a smaller nerva in game, that is what you need to optimize a craft, not just TWR/ISP, the under performance Saturn C-5N still would have got 155 tons to orbit vs 118 and cut mars transit in half
<BadRocketsCo> Oh, huh. I'll have to look at that then.
<BadRocketsCo> I remember trying a NERVA and getting some pretty bad results. But perhaps I just did something wrong.
<Bornholio> you should have 7000+dv or so in a nuclear stage to really start taking adjvantage of it
<schnobs> Supposedly there was a Nerva stage that could replace S-IV: mass, dimensions & performance.
<Bornholio> if its for ascent you have to lob high then do a lot of time post ap and circ to a lower orbit. C-5N
<schnobs> Never tried if it could be made with the RO Nervas.
<Bornholio> it was a paper engine
<Bornholio> and its the NERVA in RO
<schnobs> As I said, never tried.
<schnobs> I only ever used it once, for a mars mission. Long burn time is hard to plan for, repeating 30-minute burns until you get it right isn't all that entertaining either.
<BadRocketsCo> Thinking of manned mars mission profiles.
<schnobs> Definitely a good engine for the task. With then boiloff (and no cooling), I had about a day to mate the fuelled Nerva with the payload.
<schnobs> But, as I said, long burn. Might be easier in principia, but stock nodes just can't handle it.
<egg|zzz|egg> meow
<schnobs> 30 second spool-up time doesn't go over well with MJ, either.
<Bornholio> you have to time your own nodes, need the time to spool up in
<BadRocketsCo> Currently inspired by Baxters "Voyage" mission but I suppose that it has a long burn time aswell anyway
<BadRocketsCo> And I am terrified of long burn times because I've ever only had those for geosats
<BadRocketsCo> And usualy just 2-3 burns to get to. Not sure if I can allow that with a Mars mission profile
<schnobs> I don't know how difficult it is to calculate a power track, but I really wish there was a mod for that.
<Bornholio> remember to build in some dV for gravity losses since much of your burn will be not at pe, also start them higher so you don't skim atmosphere
Senshi has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
<schnobs> In stock, I can string together a series of several maneuvers to mimic a power track. Some hassle to set up but works well. With RL-10, too, it tends to have enough ignitions.
<BadRocketsCo> Bornholio: 230isg km orbit should be fine, right?
<BadRocketsCo> s/isg/ish
<Qboid> BadRocketsCo meant to say: Bornholio: 230ish km orbit should be fine, right?
<Bornholio> depends on TWR but should be fine
<Bornholio> off to solo
<BadRocketsCo> Aight
<schnobs> Checking old screenshots, burn time was on the order of 20min. Starting from a nearly 500km orbit mostly for the sake of easy rendezvous.

<BadRocketsCo> Ugh
<BadRocketsCo> schnobs: oh, interesting. I suppose I'll just have to figure out how to do the burn properly.
<BadRocketsCo> Well, no. First I will have to plan the transport vehicle and lander and stuff
<schnobs> BadRocketsCo: the item on top was this MEM. The crew module in between is Skylab. At departure, the Nerva stage made for about 45% of vessel mass.
<BadRocketsCo> Wow, that thing must be really wide.
<BadRocketsCo> Anyway, looks awesome!
<schnobs> 10m, the widest heat shield at the time :)

<Bornholio> schnobs, i find that the space plane tank is all thats needed for mars even at fast conjunction speeds for a heat shield

<schnobs> Bornholio: I know, and having a closer look at the screenshots it seems I want that route, too:
<schnobs> However, the lander was just too heavy for it's base diameter.
<Bornholio> lots of engines
<schnobs> Well, if you need deep throttling and storable fuel, there's not that much to chose from.
