the integrated manned interplanetary spacecraft concept had a laser comms requirement for high bandwidth data, see NTRS 19680009769.pdf for the start of it. Kind of like DRA 5.0 except 1.0 :)

Starwaster: I’m pretty sure that one didn’t happen, unlike the moon landing, which did happen. :P
<Starwaster>
acharles I didn't necessarily mean 'did it happen' but I guess the question wasn't intended to have a right or wrong answer...
<Starwaster>

<acharles>

<acharles>

<soundnfury>

thanks bornholio but it doesn't contain the kind of information I'm looking for
<Bornholio>
i use that to find the right words to feed into NTRS

<Starwaster>
tanks look about maybe 4 ft long each
<Starwaster>
gonna call it 90 liters each tank each side
<Starwaster>
wow so I just created my own interpretation of the SIVB-N and the second stage was sufficient to carry it to orbit all by itself... on account of the third stage being so light with nothing but H2

<Bornholio>
thus the butt-tun of extra load it could have carried to orbit compared to normal S
