lamont what about descent guidance? Has that begun to be on your radar at all yet? MJ vacuum guidance for descent is mostly accurate but it doesn't do vertical velocity management at all so if you come in on RO sized moons on too shallow a trajectory (as in from low altitude) it will crash and burn hard (and initiating lunar landings from a low altitude is much more fuel efficient)
<lamont>
yeah that has always been the aspiration
<lamont>
get launches working well enough, get node executor working well enough, then solve descents
<Starwaster>
I've rewritten FinalDescent.cs a bit to make it more mindful of the vertical vector and it's pretty good about not crashing now but it wreaks absolute havoc on accuracy because it adds extra downrange mileage
<Starwaster>
so I'm hesitant about submitting it
<lamont>
i haven’t even looked at that problem yet, but it should be possible to hoverslam accurately with a single burn, with high TWR engines and nail the landing on airless moons
<Starwaster>
well you can do that right now if you start from high altitude anyway. But you burn more fuel that way
<lamont>
yeah, it should be able to nail it
<Starwaster>
for instance you ahve to start from a couple hundred km up or higher
<Starwaster>
the LM back in the 60s started descent from 15km altitude
<lamont>
but i’ve only just gotten vanilla ascents mostly working perfectly now
<lamont>
there’s still the node executor. and even with ascents, there’s still suborbital targets, targets for X km @ Y m/s like you wanted for contracts, all kinds of other arbitrary mix-and-match keplerian targets, and launch to rendezvous and accurate launch timing is still a glimmer in my eye...
<lamont>
but yeah, landing is a big one of its own.
<lamont>
and there’s so many flybys in the MJ forum thread of people super excited to hoverslam their falcon heavies with MJ
<lamont>
so aero forces are also a thing, and reserving enough fuel for boostback (i think that’s an issue you cut as well)

lamont: I think it's not necessarily possible to do a single-burn landing from orbit. You may have to do a de-orbit burn, coast, then a landing burn, depending on your initial orbit parameters, TWR, etc.
<soundnfury>
(though I think it _is_ always possible to do a single-burn landing from a suborbital arc, unless you're descending so fast you can't even avoid crashing)

PSA: on 1.3.1, CKAN will give you a broken version of B9 proc wings (that's actually for 1.1, but says 1.1+), because there's no release of the fork for 1.3.1.
<soundnfury>
Tell CKAN to show mods for 1.3 as well, so that B9-fork appears in the list.
