<Rokker> NathanKell: holy crap its NK
<Rokker> did yall watch the cosmonauts stibbity stab the soyuz today
<lamont> whoah
<NathanKell> I did not have a chance to watch, no...
<NathanKell> Good to see y'all :)
<Rokker> NathanKell: so you know how apollo 13 was sorta done on the fly and just the made shit up as they went along
<Rokker> this was that times 5
<NathanKell> Ah! Huh
<lamont> i have new guidance which is almost ready to go beta
<Rokker> NathanKell: I'm almost surprised they didnt accidentally put a second hole in there
<Starwaster> bornholio I dont think so
<Starwaster> omg NathanKell?
<Starwaster> who the hell are you and what have you done with the REAL NathanKell?
<NathanKell> Locked him in a box, obvs.
<NathanKell> lamont: Sorry, what do?
<NathanKell> lamont: What it do, I mean
<lamont> i jammed a vacuum-accurate trajectory optimizer into mechjeb
<NathanKell> sorry, come again?
<lamont> substantially more accurate than PEG
<NathanKell> Ah, interesting
<lamont> so for ascents on the earth its only off by about 400 m/s dV from atmo effects
<lamont> and it can handle optimization of coast periods
<lamont> and it can easily handle Ariane V-like things that take 25 minutes to burn into insertion over africa
<lamont> right now it mostly just replicates the functionality of PEG only more accurate and with one optional coast before the last stage
<lamont> but its also ultimately more extendable to different targeting conditions, suborbital target, etc
<lamont> but i need to back out what i was trying to do with the node executor because that’s totally broken right now
<Bornholio> you break that every third day :P
<Bornholio> Looks awesome, maybe i'll even get to try it out this weekend
<lamont> yeah, i have ambitions, but getting launches running smoothly as i wanted has taken…. some time...
<lamont> i might have a beta by/on this weekend
<NathanKell> Congrats! :)
<NathanKell> Gotta go deal with supper. But will try to be less of a stranger. Good to see you all. :)
<NathanKell> And soundnfury, don't tempt me with RIS games. :P

<Starwaster> lamont what about descent guidance? Has that begun to be on your radar at all yet? MJ vacuum guidance for descent is mostly accurate but it doesn't do vertical velocity management at all so if you come in on RO sized moons on too shallow a trajectory (as in from low altitude) it will crash and burn hard (and initiating lunar landings from a low altitude is much more fuel efficient)
<lamont> yeah that has always been the aspiration
<lamont> get launches working well enough, get node executor working well enough, then solve descents
<Starwaster> I've rewritten FinalDescent.cs a bit to make it more mindful of the vertical vector and it's pretty good about not crashing now but it wreaks absolute havoc on accuracy because it adds extra downrange mileage
<Starwaster> so I'm hesitant about submitting it
<lamont> i haven’t even looked at that problem yet, but it should be possible to hoverslam accurately with a single burn, with high TWR engines and nail the landing on airless moons
<Starwaster> well you can do that right now if you start from high altitude anyway. But you burn more fuel that way
<lamont> yeah, it should be able to nail it
<Starwaster> for instance you ahve to start from a couple hundred km up or higher
<Starwaster> the LM back in the 60s started descent from 15km altitude
<lamont> but i’ve only just gotten vanilla ascents mostly working perfectly now
<lamont> there’s still the node executor. and even with ascents, there’s still suborbital targets, targets for X km @ Y m/s like you wanted for contracts, all kinds of other arbitrary mix-and-match keplerian targets, and launch to rendezvous and accurate launch timing is still a glimmer in my eye...
<lamont> but yeah, landing is a big one of its own.
<lamont> and there’s so many flybys in the MJ forum thread of people super excited to hoverslam their falcon heavies with MJ
<lamont> so aero forces are also a thing, and reserving enough fuel for boostback (i think that’s an issue you cut as well)
<lamont> its just… time.

<soundnfury> lamont: I think it's not necessarily possible to do a single-burn landing from orbit. You may have to do a de-orbit burn, coast, then a landing burn, depending on your initial orbit parameters, TWR, etc.
<soundnfury> (though I think it _is_ always possible to do a single-burn landing from a suborbital arc, unless you're descending so fast you can't even avoid crashing)

<soundnfury> PSA: on 1.3.1, CKAN will give you a broken version of B9 proc wings (that's actually for 1.1, but says 1.1+), because there's no release of the fork for 1.3.1.
<soundnfury> Tell CKAN to show mods for 1.3 as well, so that B9-fork appears in the list.
