raptop changed the topic of #principia to: READ THE FAQ: http://goo.gl/gMZF9H; The current version is Fréchet. We currently target 1.5.1, 1.6.1, and 1.7.x. <scott_manley> anyone that doubts the wisdom of retrograde bop needs to get the hell out | https://xkcd.com/323/ | <egg> calculating the influence of lamont on Pluto is a bit silly… | <egg> also 4e16 m * 2^-52 is uncomfortably large

Sir Mortimer. — hmm
<discord-_>
Sir Mortimer. — would a ring station actually be able to maintain it's attitude, or will it spin, wobble and flip if the mass distribution is incorrect?
<discord-_>
Sir Mortimer. — hmm
<discord-_>
Sir Mortimer. — would a ~~ring station~~ a vessel with a gravity ring actually be able to maintain it's attitude, or will it spin, wobble and flip if the mass distribution is incorrect? (edited)
<discord-_>
Standecco. — it depends on how much of the vessel is rotating, I guess
<discord-_>
Standecco. — usually you have a stationary vessel with a gravity ring rotating around the axis with the least moment of inertia
<discord-_>
Standecco. — so it should be stable
<discord-_>
Standecco. — if you had an actual ring, then I'm not sure you can observe the tennis racket effect thing at all since 2 of the 3 axis are identical
<discord-_>
Standecco. — now if the mass distribution _in the ring_ is not uniform, the you'll have a preceding angular momentum
<discord-_>
Sir Mortimer. — No parties in the ring, please! Last time half the crew got seasick because of the wobbling vessel!
<discord-_>
Standecco. — now if the mass distribution _in the ring_ is not uniform, then you'll have a preceding angular momentum (edited)
<discord-_>
Standecco. — interstellar but the orbital station has too much mass in the factory side of it and it wobbles constantly
<discord-_>
Sir Mortimer. — if you have sections, you could reduce the wobble by reducing the radius of the heavier section
<discord-_>
Sir Mortimer. — or increasing the radius of the lighter one....
<discord-_>
Standecco. — or you could make it symmetrical, with the heaviest stuff on the center
<discord-_>
Standecco. — it's how Rama worked, more or less
<discord-_>
Standecco. — although the southern side had a 500m higher "floor" to account for the ocean sloshing when accelerating

Falcon. — hey egg, is there a guide to NRHO/HALO orbits around the moon?
<discord-_>
Damien. — regular halo orbits are fairly simple but the NRHO is interesting
<discord-_>
Boris. — Hi ! With Principia, is there a way to have a maneuver node ? Or is everything is going throught flight planner ? (first time using this mod)
<discord-_>
Falcon. — so are these orbits facing the earth parallel in terms of the orbital plane? or are the orbits side by side and facing the earth perpendicular?
<discord-_>
Falcon. — and if they are parallel, how much of an inclination are they?
<discord-_>
Falcon. — @Transparent_Elemental
<discord-_>
Falcon. — moving that conversation here
<discord-_>
Damien. — that's what I'm struggling to find, some specifics on inc/argpe/ap/pe etc
<discord-_>
Damien. — as it is we'd have to just eyeball it and see what happens
<discord-_>
Falcon. — im going to try for a southern L1
<discord-_>
Damien. — good luck
<discord-_>
Damien. — I need to set up a new install so I can play along
<discord-_>
Damien. — just messing about in stock at the moment
<discord-_>
Transparent_Elemental. — weren't they planning it with polar access in mind? so that would make sense keeping it in a highly inclined (relative to the moon) orbit
<discord-_>
Falcon. — im going to assume that the picture i posted above has the plane of the orbit parallel to earth, and inclined at about 75-80 degrees
<discord-_>
Damien. — yeah it looks to be a polar orbit oriented so you're never occluded by the moon
<discord-_>
Damien. — that precesses around it due to lagrange nonsense
<discord-_>
Damien. — at the same rate you orbit the earth
<discord-_>
Transparent_Elemental. — and also if it were facing the earth at the same angle as the moon the moon would not allow you to communicate much more than it does in a polar-ish orbit
<discord-_>
Falcon. — would you think that orbital inclination looks about right?
<discord-_>
Damien. — ok, bought a gyroscope, back to installing
<discord-_>
Damien. — @Falcon I'm just messing with the NRHO, and from reading, it seems they first capture into a Distant Retrograde Orbit, which, interestingly from reading up on it, is the horseshoe thing I posted further up
<discord-_>
Damien. — I'm trying to brute force it though, just get into a lunar orbit and play with it
<discord-_>
Damien. — @Falcon I'm just messing with the NRHO, and from reading, it seems they transition between NRHOs using a Distant Retrograde Orbit, which, interestingly from reading up on it, is the horseshoe thing I posted further up (edited)

Damien. — @Falcon I've got something that kinda looks like one, but can't execute it because my engine broke (kerbalism) and RCS burns will be just painful, and also because I just crashed the game by having my flight plan at low tolerance and then trying to edit the plan length using the text box instead of the slider
<discord-_>
Damien. — 3233 Pe, push Ap out to 6d14h (6.6d) and then tweak inclination until it looks right
<discord-_>
Damien. — inclination burn is in my initial parking orbit so I could use burns 2 and 3 for the Pe/Ap and then adjust the inclination to see what happens
<discord-_>
Damien. — just had to force quit the game. I saved in my parking orbit though so can have another go
<discord-_>
Damien. — I think the issue we're gonna have is flight plan steps/tolerance enough to have an accurate plan, and having enough fps for it to be usable

Butcher. — @Damien a $1500 gyroscope?
<discord-_>
Damien. — I didn't buy that one lol
<discord-_>
Damien. — But yeah that one is pretty cool
<discord-_>
Butcher. — It's just a learning tool?
<discord-_>
Damien. — Yeah
<discord-_>
Damien. — I bought a little one just as a desk toy
<discord-_>
Damien. — But if you were looking to study aerospace gyroscopes I suppose these fancy ones would be useful
<discord-_>
lpg. — > Rotating a spacecraft in space can only be achieved in two ways (3 ways with reaction wheels)
<discord-_>
lpg. — what an odd way to present this
<discord-_>
Damien. — Yeah that's not worded well at all
