raptop changed the topic of #principia to: READ THE FAQ: http://goo.gl/gMZF9H; The current version is Fréchet. We currently target 1.5.1, 1.6.1, and 1.7.x. <scott_manley> anyone that doubts the wisdom of retrograde bop needs to get the hell out | https://xkcd.com/323/ | <egg> calculating the influence of lamont on Pluto is a bit silly… | <egg> also 4e16 m * 2^-52 is uncomfortably large

egg. — @sarbian I can’t seem to get the GCMonitor window to show up anymore, something might have eventually broken (the Alt+F overlay works though)
<discord-_>
egg. — hmmm looking at it more carefully I’m not actually sure I see much that resembles a leak

haltwise. — @egg my saves are all under 2MB.
<discord-_>
haltwise. — I am using the extra-big RSS textures. Could that somehow be relevant? I'm just trying to think of things that would be brought into memory at scene load and take up hundreds of MB.
<discord-_>
haltwise. — Also, I'm on 1.9.1, using a local build of Kopernicus from master.
<discord-_>
haltwise. — Happy to provide more info about my setup.

Butcher. — @haltwise when you revert so you change which body you are near or is this all in earth orbit?

egg. — @haltwise there is also the issue mentioned within that one, that we compute the history of the solar system from 1950 on save load
<discord-_>
egg. — which takes up a bit of memory when loaded, and takes a while
<discord-_>
egg. — (but that is not loaded; it is simply large and slow)

Kobymaru. — my craft sometimes jerks sideways when I try to roll it, is that part of the infamous "Spin-up on reentry" bug?
<discord-_>
lpg. — sounds like the current state of it, yes
<discord-_>
lpg. — speaking of which... new video, showing a new manifestation of the effect with the last test build:
<discord-_>
lpg. — This is a single-part, "cubic" vessel high in venus atmo. The red dot is MJ's CoM indicator. With frobenius, it stays put

egg. — O_o
<discord-_>
egg. — the centre of mass moves with respect to the part? that makes no sense…
<discord-_>
lpg. — I'd take it with a grain of salt, I don't know what's the exact relationship between that indicator and "reality". But the movement matches what the G-Force indicator does, so it's not just MJ going nuts
<discord-_>
lpg. — F3 window showed me a peak of something like 40G at one point. (actual atmo deceleration never got that high)
<discord-_>
egg. — hmm.
<discord-_>
lpg. — one theory for the dot is that it's just lagging behind. camera's centered on the part, so we wouldn't see if the part itself is moving
<discord-_>
egg. — that behaviour does not occur in space, right?
<discord-_>
lpg. — not that I've seen
<discord-_>
egg. — interesting
<discord-_>
DRVeyl. — Doesn't make sense for anything to be changing the CoM of a part. If the CoM is "moving" the origin of the part is moving.
<discord-_>
egg. — I am not sure we should expect things to make sense, this is KSP
<discord-_>
DRVeyl. — Moving the G meter is a lot more consistent with moving the part than some bizarre "move the CoM, leave it a frame, then put it back where you found it?"
<discord-_>
DRVeyl. — That said, I certainly have had "fun" dealing with eg multiple cameras that aren't always in sync, and dunno what camera MJ is using there.
<discord-_>
egg. — @DRVeyl if this behaviour of the MJ indicator appears when we correct by reorientation and does not appear otherwise, and so does the weird oscillation of the g-load, there is reason to think that we are doing something that causes the game to think that the ship is weirdly bouncing
<discord-_>
DRVeyl. — Agree completely.
<discord-_>
egg. — what that may be, otoh…
<discord-_>
egg. — maybe some weird floating origin issue ?
<discord-_>
egg. — @lpg what is the size of that cube
<discord-_>
lpg. — 50cm

Pteropodidae. — @Butcher The solar system history recomputation takes place on every scene change. Storing the history doesn't seem to be feasible due to space requirements.

haltwise. — @Butcher @egg this is all in low Earth orbits, I'm only at ~1960.
egg|laptop|egg has joined #principia
<discord-_>
egg. — @haltwise low Earth orbits are the costliest things to store, and 1960 means 10 years of history to recompute and fill your memory with at every scene change
<discord-_>
haltwise. — OK. But assuming that history is what was being leaked, would it be hundreds of MB in size?
<discord-_>
Damien. — @egg can celestial history be capped at some number of solar orbits?
<discord-_>
egg. — for 10 years of ephemeris I think we are talking gigabytes; but history is definitely not in a place where it risks being *leaked*
<discord-_>
Kobymaru. — So I'm having an issue with my fairings, and I'm pretty sure it's because of Principia.
<discord-_>
Kobymaru. — When I stage off Procedural fairings, they tilt a little, then stop in place. I tried different sizes, offsets, different fairing bases, ...
<discord-_>
egg. — @Damien we have a plan for 2400. The plan does not involve capping histories, it involves changing their representation. This will take a while.
<discord-_>
Damien. — Fair enough
<discord-_>
Kobymaru. — and the only thing that actually helped was uninstalling Principia
<discord-_>
Damien. — Sorry for the bug report @egg who knew it would open such a can of worms...

<discord-_>
egg. — @Damien the rotations were quite fun to implement tbh; 2519 is annoying but well, bugs are bugs
<discord-_>
Damien. — Sorry for the rotation bug report @egg. who knew it would open such a can of worms... (edited)
<discord-_>
Damien. — It's a landmark upgrade, you should be proud of it. Thanks for all the hard work
<discord-_>
Kobymaru. — indeed, thanks for the hard work. Principia really makes the game worthwile
<discord-_>
Kobymaru. — Bugs are bugs, they'll be found eventually
<discord-_>
Kobymaru. — @egg so should I report the Fairing deployment issue to Principia?
<discord-_>
Kobymaru. — @egg so should I report the Fairing deployment issue to the Principia GitHub? (edited)
<discord-_>
egg. — it does not really sound like you have anything resembling reproduction steps so let’s not ; maybe it’s a manifestation of 2519 ?
<discord-_>
egg. — is this new, or did it happen in previous versions ?
<discord-_>
egg. — in particular :
<discord-_>
egg. — - did it happen before Frobenius ?

<discord-_>
Kobymaru. — I don't know, I was on a Hiatus and came back to Fubini. I just found the issue. I'll do more tests to confirm it's Principia, but it really looks like it. Yes, could be a manifestation of 2519
<discord-_>
lpg. — you should be able to downgrade to frobenius to try. unsure about going further back
<discord-_>
Kobymaru. — downgrading works??
<discord-_>
egg. — yeah, if you are able to reproduce the issue try with older versions
<discord-_>
egg. — wellll
<discord-_>
egg. — not really
<discord-_>
Kobymaru. — ok
<discord-_>
egg. — depends
<discord-_>
Kobymaru. — I'll just create a new sandbox save for debugging, it's not a problem
<discord-_>
egg. — but if you start a new save and put the same spacecraft in the older-version save, that will work fine
<discord-_>
lpg. — I've been switching specifically between fubini and frobenius with no issues
<discord-_>
egg. — yeah those two are save-compatible
<discord-_>
egg. — but forward compatibility is not a thing we guarantee in general
<discord-_>
haltwise. — Hey, so I haven't totally been following the rotation discussion here, but I've got a vessel that spins up in vacuum as soon as I stop warp, and I'm NOT running Principia. Don't know if that's useful information.
<discord-_>
haltwise. — It's a weird tumble, not on a consistent axis. And mechjeb reads 0.0002g only when out of warp (goes to 0 when warping). Like some single part is under slight constant acceleration.
