man, maintaining multiple KSP installs sure makes me wish that NTFS was copy-on-write

umaxtu: btrfs is sufficiently stable for home use and has been for some time (still some potential issues with RAID5, though it has native RAID0, RAID1, and RAID10 support). KSP also runs natively on linux. Only mod I've encountered issues with was dockingcam, and he managed to fix that.
<SporkWitch>
(in case it wasn't sufficiently implied, btrfs does COW by default)
<SporkWitch>
that said, i'm not sure how COW would help you there. What you need is something with deduplication; file-level should be sufficient, but block-level would of course be ideal.

btrfs is <3
<Izaya>
especially for KSP, compression helps a little but the real gain is the fact that I can make reflinked copies for multiple instances
<Izaya>
SporkWitch: what was the issue with dockingcam? installed it but it didn't work so I removed it and kept going with DPAI

SporkWitch: yeah, btrfs is awesome. thats what I use on my laptop
<SporkWitch>
Izaya: it needed one of the files replaced, something he did to generate the visuals only liked windows, so all you got in-game was a solid colour on the window
<Izaya>
is it in the thread somewhere?
<SporkWitch>
not sure. if you're still running into it, it sounds like he didn't integrate it into the main release.
<SporkWitch>
i don't see an issue on the repo, so can't remember how i contacted him
<SporkWitch>
nm, guess we didn't fix it before i had to go back to windows for something else

<Izaya>
ah well, will poke at it later
<SporkWitch>
i'm trying to figure out how best to start my first colony... i'm buidling the first construction ship now. one of my mods adds caterpillar tracks, which I think will prove useful
<Izaya>
I want a message handler that runs on boot but doesn't stop me doing stuff
<packbart>
that's an interesting bulldozer/construction workshop
<funkenstein>
caterpillar tracks seem useful, if only you could make custom sizes
<funkenstein>
not like scale tweaking, but custom placement of the wheels within and therefore the angles that the edges meet at
<funkenstein>
I'm sure that was poorly worded
<SporkWitch>
packbart: it's just the basic mobile workshop from the ground construction mod, and some tracks from another mod; nothing else attached yet, just wanted to see how well they worked, and i'm pretty impressed. it's smart enough to rotate in place without reaction wheels, and it was stable on the small hills west of the KSC at 20m/s
<SporkWitch>
funkenstein: tweakscale is supported, but it's the standard all-at-once scaling, not specific dimensions
<SporkWitch>
there's a decent variety of tracks in the mod, the ones in the image just seemed the obvious choice
<SporkWitch>
i need to figure out what i actually need to start building, though. this is one of the big things i'm hoping they make easier in KSP2, because as good as the stuff in Ground Construction and MKS are, they're very kludgy and convoluted.
<funkenstein>
I still haven't figured out how to use the motors, for either vtols or wheels
<SporkWitch>
wheels just work, badly, but they work; don't need to mess with the motor stuff. for VTOL, that one's a nightmare. IRL, everything we have that does it is fly-by-wire with advanced flight computers to automatically balance the craft. Prior to that technology, all attempts at such, especially tilt-rotors like the Osprey, were incredibly difficult to fly and were basically death traps (and that's
<SporkWitch>
with experts designing them and flying them)

spent most of today reading instead of playing and i've come to the conclusion I'm just doing things all wrong lol. Much simpler to use the WOLF stuff for most of this, and focus on the MKS stuff in space only, not on the surface. It's also basically immune to the kraken, since once landed, it "poofs" and is simulated in the background without having physical models anymore
