<SporkWitch>
hmm, anyone know why it won't let me refuel the uranium in these unclear engines? KSPI. The engines are set for Uranium-238 TWR (which shows storage for Enriched Uranium), so I sent up a container of enriched uranium, they're docked to the same station, the reufel button shows up on EVA, but it doesn't refill...
<SporkWitch>
something's definitely weird. I launch it from kerbin with enriched uranium loaded by default, activate the engines and it automatically switches to Uranium Oxide mode and consumed the enriched uranium. Shut down the engine, swap the modes so it moves the fuel to the container i have with enriched uranium, and it does. Switch it back to uranium oxide and refuel still doesn't work >_<

Izaya: the right click thing works for any of those things. ascending/descending nodes, target position at approach, closest approach, etc.
<SporkWitch>
VERY helpful in adjusting your planned maneuver
<Izaya>
no kidding
<Izaya>
though at this point I just write a quick kOS loop to get the exact result I want
<SporkWitch>
i need to start learning that; installed it but haven't messed with it yet
<SporkWitch>
i have been taking advantage of mechjeb lately so it doesn't waste my monopropellant on rotation, and the docking autopilot is convenient. never had any issue manually docking, but when you've done things so many times, it's a nice convenience, especially with larger craft
<Izaya>
mechjeb always seemed sorta cheap to me somehow
<Izaya>
much more satisfying to do stuff with software you wrote than software someone else wrote
sasamj has joined #KSPOfficial
<SporkWitch>
definitely agree, again, more a convenience to get more sane behaviour (again, wtf am I wasting monoprop for rotation when we have magic un-saturatable reaction wheels? lol), and convenience on stuff i've done before manually
<Izaya>
yee I get that
<Izaya>
next thing I need to automate is docking, I've done that enough times by now
<Izaya>
then I'm going to try to automate landing
<Izaya>
(in a vacuum, I've already got splashdown at the KSC down)
<SporkWitch>
since I use FAR and Deadly Reentry (though I'm debating turning that last off; it doesn't like the geometry on some of the command pods I have and so heat shields don't protect some of the non-stock ones properly), the landing and launch autopilots aren't options heh. takes more trial and error and tweaking per craft than simply manually flying it lol
<SporkWitch>
it has a habit of either tearing itself apart by trying to start the turn too early, or burning up because it doesn't get out of the atmosphere soon enough
<Izaya>
I make sure that a given craft can re-enter from LKO before using it in production, but they all get the same treatment, slight angle tweaks notwithstanding
<SporkWitch>
I'm less concerned with that currently. I focused instead on building an orbital shipyard, and then yesterday was building a ferry and lander for use on mun and minmus. Currently on its maiden voyage to minmus now. The idea is that both will stay in space, and I'll use simple rockets and pods to ferry crew to and from the station. Still need to design an efficient fuel lifter to reload the
<SporkWitch>
station, pending setting up mining operations on minmus, but it saves me having to deal with kerbin's gravity well for most stuff. Only big issue is that the shipyard isn't smart enough to load the constructed ship with fuels from the station, and due to what seems to be a bug with KSPI and Near Future, not all nuclear stuff is possible to manually refuel (specifically, most of yesterday was
<SporkWitch>
spent not on design, but trying to figure out what i was screwing up in trying to manually fuel the nuclear engines on the ferry)
<Izaya>
I guess I should clarify that I only re-entry test stuff that is intended to re-enter, mostly crew spacecraft.
<Izaya>
I have like three generations of a really simple half-soyuz thinger in use, carries three crew to my LKO station for under 10k and can return them to the KSC
<SporkWitch>
in the end I gave up and just did a ground launch and cheated it into orbit, since there's seemingly no way to refuel the nervas outside the VAB/SPH, at least not using uranium fuel
<SporkWitch>
yeah, i got that, i just meant my setup is designed to minimize how much stuff has to deal with kerbin's atmosphere and gravity well.
<Izaya>
you can build bigger in microgravity B)
<SporkWitch>
that too :)
<Izaya>
for mun/minmus transport I have two nuclear shuttles, but I haven't set up any mining stuff yet
<SporkWitch>
that's what I ended up with for the ferry and lander. It has just enough ΔV to land and return to the ferry on Mun or Minmus, and the ferry has enough fuel for two round trips. Obvious oversight, though: I should have put SOME oxidizer on the ferry, so it could refill the lander for an extra mission >_<
<SporkWitch>
i think i can adjust that in-flight, though, so I might be able to correct that after this mission
<Izaya>
I designed my nuclear shuttles to support extra tankage and take an arbitrary module on the front rather than go for any one payload. Makes balancing it sort of a pain but whatever. https://shadowkat.net/tmp/9d32.jpg
<SporkWitch>
this thing has some overkill RCS, using the 5-way heavy blocks, so it should be sufficient to deal with off-centre loads. Using all 5 docking nodes on the Orca command module, though, so the ideal is putting the payload on the nose so mass distribution isn't much of a worry, but I also have the top and bottom ports, so I could use those as well, especially if I carry multiple to balance the load
<SporkWitch>
I do also have the CSI freighter mod, but that REALLY requires significant mining infrastructure, as its engine uses a special fuel that's absurd to buy. It has the advantage of all being custom designed as a mega freighter, and does magic mass balancing to simulate the internal load balancing you do with cargo aircraft IRL
<SporkWitch>
haven't used it yet, but it looks really cool and has this neat modular design
<Izaya>
I may have to fly up some teakettle RCS thingers at some point, though they actually have better Isp than the nuclear engine I'm using so it feels weirdly like cheating
