<JVFoxy> weee
<JVFoxy> so managed to recover sci-points from that mun station. But now left wondering what to do... I still have flying crew reports down near south pole of the Mun.. I did consider a rover thing. But would it be easier to just 'hover-fly' it?
<SporkWitch> wheels are sketchy and get sketchier the lower the gravity or more uneven the terrain. I don't trust them, as a general rule, unless it's something like Bon Voyage driving them for me out of physics range.
<SporkWitch> Mun's higher gravity definitely makes a flyer more difficult than Minmus, but if you're operating it yourself, probably worth it.
<JVFoxy> I get lower gravity, gotta drive slower, but the mun's body itself is a lot smaller. I guess I just wonder how long it takes to go from the equator to any distance
<SporkWitch> in my experience, anything much over 10m/s in munar gravity is unsafe. Higher gravity you can get away with more.
<SporkWitch> One thing I really wish is that there was something to use RCS to keep you held to the ground automatically, like in Armageddon
<JVFoxy> mun station itself is at a pretty high orbit. Technically I could lower it down, but I would need to send a fuel ship over. A lower orbit would mean less DV to burn to an orbit, but if its not an equatorial, getting a plane match is a hassle.
<SporkWitch> it's really an amazing oversight for something so cool AND functional to be missing.
<SporkWitch> yeah, I tend to do my kerbin stations just outside the high orbit line, around 260km, but for other bodies I do it nice and low to minimize the cost of reaching it from the surface.
<JVFoxy> well... could use thrusters on a separate throttle, but then you constantly using fuel
<SporkWitch> there's ways to do it, yeah, just none that are really good, especially since you also need to manage your orientation manually
<JVFoxy> funny you should say 260.. currently the station I have is just below there
<JVFoxy> I could do a lunar hopper of some sort..
<SporkWitch> i do the kerbin one at high orbit because it's not a big difference in getting to it in the grand scheme, but it's a higher science multiplier for labs and such
<JVFoxy> I would wanna setup a base with a fuel station first though. The first landing I did, the surface was pretty flat, but its small area
<SporkWitch> i'm trying to decide what to do next myself. I finished my kerbin shipyard, but I'm stuck deciding what to do next for some more science before setting up the minmus colony, or if i should just get started on the colony
<JVFoxy> I thought I ended up close to that big crater.. but ended up miles off
<JVFoxy> you don vanilla or with mods?
<SporkWitch> HEAVILY modded. KSPI and some others to compliment it, plus the usual graphcis enhancements and QoL.
<SporkWitch> think my modcount is like 105 or so right now lol
<JVFoxy> oof
<JVFoxy> I would'nt mind clouds...
<JVFoxy> I am considering a lifesupport mod
<SporkWitch> even loading from a ridiculously fast SSD and a Ryzen 9 3950x, it takes about 5 minutes to get to the main menu lol
<JVFoxy> there was that ground science pack I had been eyeing, waiting for the right time
<SporkWitch> sorry, according to ckan i have 141, though some of those are config files for some of the mods
<JVFoxy> ya I sorta neglected ckan..
<SporkWitch> just too much headache to manage mods without a manager for it
<JVFoxy> I mostly vanilla till I got back into my groove
<JVFoxy> I took a look at the alarmclock thing for transfer windows.. ugh. Makes me pine for the mod'd version
<JVFoxy> I miss the graph
<JVFoxy> if I mod though, it'll be another game in itself... stream maybe
<JVFoxy> or record
<JVFoxy> you ever looked at RP0?
<SporkWitch> dpesm
<SporkWitch> don't recognize that one
<JVFoxy> let me try to find the thing... its a change up on the research tree..
<JVFoxy> sorry realistic progression one..
<SporkWitch> oh, is that the one that moves the probes before the manned capsules?
<JVFoxy> ya
<JVFoxy> probes before crew
<SporkWitch> i considered it, but didn't seem worth it, and running Interstellar, the real progression is well beyond merely probe vs person
<JVFoxy> they tout it more based on how research was historically done in the past
<SporkWitch> yeah, i think the only reason that isn't the stock way is because i don't think probes were even a thing when i first got in very early on lol
<JVFoxy> I got into KSP back when it was 0.18
<JVFoxy> mind you, they still don't have sounding rockets ;)
<SporkWitch> not famliiar with those, but i've heard of sounding and it scares me... lol (DO NOT GOOGLE IT)
<JVFoxy> if it helps, from wiki: A sounding rocket or rocketsonde, sometimes called a research rocket or a suborbital rocket, is an instrument-carrying rocket designed to take measurements and perform scientific experiments during its sub-orbital flight.
<SporkWitch> weird use of the term sounding, then; usually sounding is used i nthe context of SONAR
<JVFoxy> think of it as a tiny version of a rocket, sometimes can be mistaken for a large weapon based missile
<JVFoxy> a place in Churchill, up here in Canada, they launched these rockets all the time as part of the Aurora lights research
<JVFoxy> basically, they launch up, and just report back what their science instruments pickup during the flight. There are also sounding fireworks. Basically a little rocket that whistles back as it flies.
<SporkWitch> gotcha
<SporkWitch> Launch stream just went live
<SporkWitch> sorry, mission control audio, probably; my phone beeped, but the main stream isn't up yet
<JVFoxy> or at least... from what I remember ages ago. Some packages said they would 'sound back'? shrug..
<JVFoxy> oh.. what's launch'n?
<SporkWitch> starlink, but night launch might be pretty
<JVFoxy> oh
<SporkWitch> hyped right now. got a job offer from a company i'm excited for. 6 figures plus stock. Waiting to hear back from one other, but unless it's significantly more, i kind of think i'm going with this one since the name will help me more in the long run
<JVFoxy> ah cool
<JVFoxy> what job if i can sk?
<JVFoxy> *ask
<SporkWitch> it's a technical support role in a security software company
<JVFoxy> ah
<JVFoxy> friend used to do software security and anti virus stuff

<SporkWitch> it's fun stuff, and that's why even though it's a support role I'm really leaning towards this one even if the other gives me a similar offer. It'll help me get back in the direction I want and out of support.
<JVFoxy> ah
<SporkWitch> still want to hear the offer or hear them turn me down, though; who knows, maybe they'll make a ridiculous offer i can't turn down lol
<SporkWitch> definitely excited though, and looking forward to putting in my notice, because while my direct boss has always done right by me, the company as a whole has NOT treated me well

<FLHerne> Guest01538: welcome :-)
<Guest01538> thanks

<Mat2ch> sooooo, many static fires lately
<Mat2ch> I bet we will see more today
<Mat2ch> I wonder if SpaceX will do a full 33 engine static fire.
<FLHerne> You'd think so
<Althego> i think they have to
<FLHerne> hopefully without junk all over the pad this time
<Althego> hard to start up those engines, and 33 of them at the same time, you have to test that
<Mat2ch> FLHerne: The pad will be cleared by then. :D
<Mat2ch> also the will need the water deluge system
<FLHerne> Mat2ch: ...one way or the other?
<Althego> hehe
<Mat2ch> Everything will be blown away ;)

<LunchBot> UmbralRaptor explodes, emitting all kinds of dinosaur DNA. You launch at night and cannot locate the Sun. Unfortunately, you can locate the ground.
<Althego> lol
<Althego> but how is theexplosion am ission
<raptop> Apparently I messed with the launch time?
<raptop> Also I have no idea why that's a mission (I didn't add it)
<Pinkbeast> Is there an !blame or similar for finding out who added what?
<raptop> Not really, given what the mission database has gone through
<raptop> Unless you have 5-10 year old logs?
<Pinkbeast> Damn it. The outcome feels like I wrote it and I wanted to know if I did :-)
<Pinkbeast> Oh - asked on r/kerbalacademy, going to ask on the forums, but I am wondering how large a vehicle (dimensions not partcount) it's practical to construct

<Mat2ch> Me bet is on Deddly
<Pinkbeast> So do I but it ain't me :-)
<SporkWitch> my bouncer logs all and so does my client, but that's mostly because i prefer the behaviour of it filling in the chat logs on connection, regardless of whether i was disconnected from all clients or not.
<SporkWitch> it's not like i think there's dirt or something i need to save here lol
<FLHerne> I have a log, but it doesn't go back far enough to blame that outcome on anything
<FLHerne> from the order of outcomes.txt, it's one of the ones inherited from kmath
<FLHerne> which I believe came via bees grepping them out of his logs
<raptop> ^that's what happened
<SporkWitch> think today's mission will be developing a reusable transport and lander for the local kerbin system. think i've got the parts i have in mind unlocked now

<SporkWitch> i can't figure out how to power this plasma engine >_< lol
<JVFoxy> solar panels?
<SporkWitch> i need to generate 60MW lol
<SporkWitch> trying to make the ELF Plasma engine work lol
<JVFoxy> oh.. mod'd
<SporkWitch> I'm thinking I might just not have sufficiently efficient reactors to generate what i need
<SporkWitch> Might have to try experimenting with beamed power. Hadn't really messed with that, I tend to prefer self-contained stuff.
<JVFoxy> more reactors, guessing more heat dissipation too.
<SporkWitch> (not to mention it's just tedious to set up constellations of satellites)
<SporkWitch> (not to mention time, since to be really efficient, you want your solar farm pretty close to the sun)
<SporkWitch> i think i must be doing something wrong, since as far as I can see the reactor i'm using SHOULD put out 20MW, but it's only giving me 4
<JVFoxy> might be bug or its self throttling?
<JVFoxy> check heat levels?
<darsie> 60 MW continous?
<SporkWitch> heat looks stable, but maybe it's just showing that i had the minimum?
<SporkWitch> a lot of the KSPI stuff does self-throttle based on capacity and draw, up to a limit (need a minimum or things melt down or explode)

<SporkWitch> think i figured it out. the reactor puts out a total of 30MW, but it's 25MW in the form of charged particles, and only 5MW in the form of thermal, so even though the thermal generator is capable of more, it's not getting enough to do so. I'll need to figure out which reactor gives more thermal power
