You build a zero-g simulation plane and try to fly it. KSP in a nutshell.

You set out on your mission with nefarious porpoises in mind. Defying the billion to one odds, your ship manages to hit a previously unseen asteroid.

<SporkWitch>
speaking of porpoises, ever read the book Spinnerette? One of the races are totally aquatic and the difficulties that poses them for spaceflight are explored briefly. was a really nice touch
<SporkWitch>
why does mechjeb keep detaching my SRBs immediately instead of lighting them...

hmmm, manual launch bugs out too... must have screwed something up...

You experiment with mixed vegetable rocket staging. Your final moments are shown on Kerbin's Funniest Home Videos. You come in second.
<SporkWitch>
i've come to the conclusion that mechjeb's "launch to rendesvous" function simply doesn't work. it wants to launch me into a weird retrograde orbit and keeps screwing up staging...
sasamj has quit [Quit: Connection closed for inactivity]
<funkenstein>
it also doesn't land you reliably at all
<SporkWitch>
i've found the landing works fine on minmus, at least
<funkenstein>
in my experience it thinks the ground is 20 meters below where it actually is
<funkenstein>
that, or it ignores staging, landing legs, and fuel entirely
<funkenstein>

Cheddar and onion quiche.
<SporkWitch>
i gave up on the launch-to-rendesvous stuff, though. Just launch to a regular 100km orbit and then use the maneuver planner to calculate the transfer burn (unlike astrogator, MJ does a combined prograde + inclination change burn for maximum efficiency, just gotta do a tiny burn right after to adjust the periapsis at the destination)
Fire-Dragon-DoL has joined #KSPOfficial
<SporkWitch>
the staging stuff is definitely flaky, as to fuel, yeah, it doesn't calculate it, it just burns according to the landing regime it's programmed with. Not the most efficient compared to a suicide burn, but i'm finding it sufficiently accurate for landing near existing stuff, making it perfect for landing base additions
<SporkWitch>
I'm about to start construction on my minmus base. Currently scouting resources. Will likely do the main base on the Greater Flats just for ease and convenience, then set up some transport routes to the other biomes. I've still yet to come up with a decent rover, though. That low gravity is so convenient for most stuff, but a nightmare for rovers. Though I guess it would probably be fine if I
<SporkWitch>
just let bon voyage handle moving them around...
<SporkWitch>
i hope they release a video on the construction mechanics in KSP2 soon. I'm really hopeful that they make it kind of like an open-world VAB or city builder, then have kerbals go do the construction for you. It'd be a nightmare otherwise and they really need to make it easy to put things together once the resources and personnel are there. That's the fun part, not fighting to maneuver things
<SporkWitch>
into position.

funkenstein: so playing around with the landing autopilot more, the trick seems to be that it's not very good at figuring out the plane change if you're far off from where you want to land. if you adjust your orbit so that you're reasonably close to the target, it consistently lands me very close to the spot I mark

wow, I forgot just how ugly early KSP was
<FLHerne>
I mean, the current graphics are hardly high-fidelity, but there aren't blatantly obvious tiling patterns on every landscape texture
<SporkWitch>
yeah, watching early shots is pretty jarring, even more so if you run graphics mods normally lol

the VAB interface, too; only 5 tabs? lol

hey, they're better than in 1.0 or whatever it was

1.2?
<FLHerne>
the one where every wheeled vehicle invariably exploded
<SporkWitch>
even modded. was making yet another attempt at a minmus rover the other day, tried using tracks from one of the mods i have since they're usually more reliable than regular wheels, the track broke itself after driving 5 metres lol
<SporkWitch>
apparently there's an upgrade for ion engines (in KSPI) that let's them work without reaction mass, if I could figure out which upgrade unlocks that, I could use the repulsors instead. it's critical that it use no reaction mass, though, so that the planetsdie transit routes are cost-free.
<SporkWitch>
hmmm... that's something I hope KSP2 has: building out rail infrastructure. I know they said explicitly that most resource production and transport will be backgrounded once it's set up, similar to KSPI / MKS, but it would be cool to build out maglev trains between outposts to ferry goods and kerbals between them
<Pinkbeast>
Also remember the game without multiple-body mechanics, 1EC == 1kJ...

sporkwitch I do so, I generally only put it on during the last 300m
<SporkWitch>
what i've been doing and getting consistent results is adjusting my inclination myself so that the next orbit passes over where i want to land, then I hit mj and it skips the plane change burn. deorbit, decelleration, braking, and final burns all work fine and get me right where i want. It's the plane change one that sometimes does weird things (on one, i aimed for the poles and it put me on the
