<Izaya> wonder if SpaceX will pay littering fines
<Azander> Will China?
<raptop> Apparently NASA took 30 years to pay off the Skylab fine
<Izaya> NASA won'
<raptop> er, wait. NASA didn't. Someone else did so on their behalf
<Izaya> NASA didn't pay it, yeah
<SporkWitch> Press release from SpaceX: "we did not have junk land in Australia, this was a targeted strike to help defend the human population from the wildlife, all of which wants to exterminate humanity"
<Izaya> speaking of chinese space junk
<Izaya> any reason they couldn't put like, some rings of thermite around the big LM boosters to cut them up into manageable pieces?

<darsie> .
<Mat2ch> I'm bored. And it's too warm to do anything
<raptop> well, darsie is also <strike>australian</strike>
<raptop> Mat2ch: build a solar deathray?
<Mat2ch> Too hot to build anything.
<Mat2ch> It's 21:00 and still 35° C outside
<darsie> I have some lasers.
<Althego> build air conditiioner then
<raptop> All hail the refrigeration cycle
<darsie> We cool our flat with night air.
<Althego> choose your working fluid wisely
<Mat2ch> If only I had a way to get the refrigerant lines out of the building...
<raptop> darsie: I mean, *I guess* if you're sufficiently up in the mountains (1.5-3 km altitude?)
<darsie> 170 m or so, IIRC.
<raptop> o_O
<darsie> 198 m above Adriatic sea.
<Mat2ch> I wonder if it is possible to store heat in a container.
<xxcoder1> yes
<raptop> Do thermal batteries count?
<Althego> thermos
<raptop> (...or for that matter, any container of a flammable liquid)
<Mat2ch> Then I could build an ac that runs without making holes into the wall. And at night I put the containers outside to cool down.
<Althego> maybe it could work by some kind of phase change
Tank2333 has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<darsie> Mat2ch: You'd probably need a very large container. Less larg, if you use a phase change material, e.g. melting something.
<darsie> Maybe some paraffin.
<Althego> yes the lunar rovers had something like that as cooling system
<Althego> LRV batteries and electronics were passively cooled, using change-of-phase wax thermal capacitor packages and reflective, upward-facing radiating surfaces. While driving, radiators were covered with mylar blankets to minimize dust accumulation. When stopped, the astronauts would open the blankets, and manually remove excess dust from the cooling surfaces with hand brushes.

<Mat2ch> It would be interesting to see how much energy I could store this way. Because after all it is just energy...

<darsie> Paraffin wax is an excellent material for storing heat, with a specific heat capacity of 2.14–2.9 J g−1 K−1 (joules per gram kelvin) and a heat of fusion of 200–220 J g−1.[15]
<Mat2ch> If my physics knowledge wouldn't be that rusty and if I wouldn't be that tired, I'd try to figure out how much heat I need to capture and how much paraffin I would need to capture it...
<Althego> waxton of heat :)

<packbart> a high-powered freezer, a good amount of cool packs and a ventilator would make another power-to-coo-air circuit
<packbart> +l
<packbart> or maybe buy some liquid nitrogen
<darsie> Yeah, that's a good way to go ;).
<packbart> proper venting is important, of course
<Althego> hehe
<packbart> but it's a storage container full off coolness
<packbart> Down with Entropy!
<raptop> packbart: careful, you need to summon demons to do that
<Althego> yamada :)
* raptop was thinking of Maxwell's
<packbart> ol' Maxwell just didn't pay the demon enough. it's a very boring business

<JVFoxy> geez.. its been.. a long time since I landed on the mun again. Had to redo the mission a few times no thanks to a couple of 'in game glitches'
<SporkWitch> coming in too hot is not a glitch :P
<SporkWitch> I hear ya, though; Minmus spoiled me, so much easier to land and take off from, and worth more science on top of it
<JVFoxy> eh.. well normally I'm pretty good at landing, but ya, I misjudged the craft's slow down capability the first time around. I was more just getting a sense of things that run though..
<JVFoxy> I had my lander parked LKO while I launched the crew section separate. The one glitch was when I got the two ships together, I noticed parts on the lander weren't where they were suppose to be. :\
<SporkWitch> oof :(
<JVFoxy> I noticed it when I saw the antenna wasn't centered like it should be. Then looked at the rest, landing legs were clipped into the body in weird places
<JVFoxy> science parts floating from craft surfaces.. ect. -shrug- I took a break from things, figured I'd try again later.
<SporkWitch> are you using a mod for orbital construction? i know in the VAB i've had it load things in weird and separated if merging in a large assembly
<JVFoxy> Imma have to come back to this site with a rover.. lol, the crater edge was further than I expected..
<JVFoxy> nah no mod, vanlila
<JVFoxy> ... vanilla (derp)
<JVFoxy> I think when I reverted after a messed up launch, tried again, something happened
<JVFoxy> hoping just shy of 800dv is enough to get back to the station.. its in a 260km orbit

<SporkWitch> from the mun or munar orbit? should be plenty from orbit
<SporkWitch> especially vanilla, since you don't have to worry about supplies, can take a leisurely return, do some aerobraking
