<LunchBot> New text is: You spice up your mission with Sriracha and Tabasco sauce.
<SporkWitch> now i want some scrambled eggs with sriracha....
<SporkWitch> spicy scrambled eggs = best scrambled eggs
<Althego> spicy scrambled radio transmissions
<SporkWitch> ... wtf were the apple guys smoking when they thought "i know, let's have a weird cut-out descend into the monitor for the camera" on a LAPTOP?! lol
<Althego> hehe
<SporkWitch> oh, right, it's Apple, they were all smoking weed, and sometimes crack...
<Althego> nobody likes nothes
<Althego> notches
<Althego> btw for years there was this rumor for the under screen cameras
<Althego> and they are still not here
<SporkWitch> i can tolerate it on a phone, because i get the very serious physical space compromises involved, but a notch on a LAPTOP? it's a 16" macbook pro, what does this thing cost? 3000 USD? make the lid 1cm longer and don't put a bloody notch into the display itself
<Althego> if you bought a mac, you are in the cult anyway
<SporkWitch> company laptop
<Althego> you will buy anything for any amount
<SporkWitch> they asked what i wanted and my response is always going to be "not windows," so i get to learn MacOS lol
<SporkWitch> i expect to spend a lot of time in the terminal or running linux in parallels lol
<SporkWitch> ... dammit steve jobs, you hold fn to access things at the TOP of the key, not the bottom! (was trying to fix the brightness; apparently you have to hold the function key to access the F-keys, not the non-standard special FUNCTIONS on those keys lol)
<Izaya> why would you ever want to use the F-keys?
<Izaya> what POSSIBLE USE would you have for F-keys? F1? F2? Who needs em?
<Althego> lot of laptops are like that
<Althego> combines with fn key at the corner, where control should be
<Izaya> I have a tablet with that setup - it doesn't even show the F-key labels on that row - but the default keymap under Linux has them swapped so it's sane to use
<SporkWitch> i've literally never encountered one that has a distinct key for F-keys and requires holding a modifer to use them as F-keys. I have seen some non-full keyboard layouts that put the F-keys on the number row and require holding fn to access them.
<Izaya> What do you mean that F-keys are an important part of the CUA?
<Althego> they are important for me
<Althego> without f keys the keyboard is useless
<SporkWitch> regardless, we're talking about half a century of basic standards and conventions. If you wanna toss that then we should toss qwerty too and switch to dvorak.
<Althego> other thing is the missing insert on full keyboards
<Izaya> I'm pretty sure there's an option in the OS X settings for that
<Althego> and the rotated 2x3 group
<Althego> why would somebody come up with such monstrosities
<SporkWitch> rotated 2x3 group?
<Althego> even the ones where there is power and such there and the normal keys are shifted
<Althego> not 3 wide and 2 high, but 2 wide and 3 high
<Izaya> I had a HP laptop with the 2x3 group as a 1x6 line down one side of the keyboard
<Izaya> I didn't hate that, but it was an adjustment
<Althego> that is a laptop
<Althego> but on a fukll keyboard
<Althego> because then home and end are left to right, thanks i hate it
<SporkWitch> ah, that group
<Althego> i get it, they want to sell something insteresting
<SporkWitch> yeah, that's silly as hell lol
<Althego> no need to innovate the keyboard layouy
<Althego> in fact, you cant
<Althego> that is why we are stuck with a silly typewriter layout
<Izaya> if you're going to change it go full retard, do something NEW
<Althego> they could innovate the switches, latency, power consumption, led lighting, i dont care
<Althego> in fact tehy should
<Izaya> I liked the steam controller pinwheel keyboard
<SporkWitch> my last vaio really drove me nuts. it advertised as a full-size keyboard but i didn't look closely enough at the images. it's not. oh, it has all 104 keys, sure, but the numpad, 2x3 group, and arrow keys are compressed, and the numpad 0 is half size with the right arrow where the left half of it would be. as someone that touchtypes the number pad, it really messed with me
<Althego> yes, if you change it, at lerast optimize it
<Althego> another idiocy: american enter looks like a shift. european enter is shorter but two rows high
<Althego> why?
<SporkWitch> you CAN innovate on keyboard layout, it's called dvorak. The reason we use the typewriter layout is no one old enough to have a say is willing to sacrifice their typing speed temporarily to learn it, and thus make the change necessary to raise a new generation on the superior layout lol
<Althego> if i try to use an american enter i always hit between the enter and the backslash, adding additional \ before newlines
<SporkWitch> re: enter, that varies. I remember the DEC machines i had in the past, and I think my C64 as well, had the vertical enter keys
<Izaya> this conversation has given me a great idea for what to do with the alt layout of my touchscreen keyboard
<Izaya> gonna have the right half be a numpad, the left half contain F1-F12 (maybe to F24?), XF86LaunchN, media and volume control keys...
<Izaya> plus the 2x3 group
<SporkWitch> heck, part of my setup today is going to be remappying command, option, and control to align with linux/windows conventions; i'm fine learning a new OS, not nearly 40 years of muscle memory on key shortcuts lol
<Izaya> ngl I kinda like the OS X style setup for it
<Izaya> especially copy and paste
<Althego> yes that command thing is also silly
<Izaya> no more "is it ^c, ^C, or ^ins to copy?"
<SporkWitch> i don't, just on layout alone. command is an awkward key to hit, and the standard combos like C^A, C^C, C^V, etc. are all command instead of control on map
<SporkWitch> s/map/mac
<Izaya> concept: ctrl replaces caps lock, mod4 goes into the corner
<SporkWitch> i remap caps lock to compose
<SporkWitch> compose key = win
<SporkWitch> (as in winning, not windows key :P)
<Izaya> compose goes on either right hand mod4 or XF86Launch1
<Izaya> for me
<SporkWitch> bah, trying to set up 2FA as required and it doesn't like my yubikey. i'll have to wait for the IT support bridge in an hour...
<Althego> cant you just install linux on the mac? :)
<Izaya> if it's one of the new ones, no :D
<Izaya> *yes, but it's very much not 100%
<SporkWitch> in ADDITION to macos? probably heh. i did ask my boss, when asking what laptop to select, if i was required to use the pre-installed OS and the answer was yes, heh
<SporkWitch> m1 chips are just arm; plenty of distros support arm, including debian
<Izaya> for quite a while you couldn't even boot any distro on them though
<Izaya> something to do with the chipset and crypto coprocessor
<Althego> in the long run apple is going the motph the chips to their liking, they will be not arm
<Izaya> I do like that Apple is doing something other than IBM PC Compatibles though, there's a valid argument for buying them now
<SporkWitch> true; they learned to well from Microsoft: standards are bad, only work with stuff you sell yourself
<SporkWitch> s/to/too/

* umbralraptor should read a bunch of Wells and Verne at some point
<FLHerne> Yes
<FLHerne> Even the modern American movie quotes it pretty much verbatim https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8y_UqIM1RcQ
<FLHerne> tbh, while I mostly hate Americanised movies, they did a really good job of that adaptation IMO
