not kerbal or space, but if anyone was a fan of the band The Offspring, their former drummer just killed it on a new track, just released half an hour ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOfvaUwWi2k
<Althego>
the guy with the beanie looks like tim pool (youtuber)
<Althego>
oh wait, it is tim pool
<SporkWitch>
yeah, it literally is lol

lol he was the drummer for the offspring?!
<Althego>
no
<Althego>
Written and performed by Tim Pool. Arranged, recorded, programmed, produced, mixed and mastered by Carter Banks. Drums written, recorded and processed by Pete Parada.
<SporkWitch>
the drummer was the drummer for the offspring. the vocalist in the beanie is Tim Pool. He's a journalist, though he's been singing and playing guitar for fun for years (and has made money busking before)

Did I understand this Starlink and T-Mobile announcement correctly? They want to add 5G to the starlink satellites and make connections over 400 km?!

at least the F-22's stopped asphyxiating their pilots... lol
<SporkWitch>
I'll have to catch up on the announcement, but my assumption would be using starlink for backhaul, NOT individual mobile phone connectivity. Makes it so you just need a tower, antenna, and power, no longer dependent on local data infrastructure.
<Mat2ch>
I've read several announcements now and they all say phone to sat
<Mat2ch>
2 to 4 MBit/s connection
<SporkWitch>
Hmm. *checks what band 5G uses*
<Mat2ch>
Crazy stuff
<Mat2ch>
(on the other hand this means your smartphone is a world wide tracking device.
<Mat2ch>
)
<SporkWitch>
I'm rusty, but even with their low orbit, it feels like the atmospheric attenuation would be too great... 5G does include soem bands used in satcom, but even irridiums need that giant dong to send/receive.
<SporkWitch>
lower orbit DOES mean stronger signal strength on the ground most of the losses are atmospheric, though.
<Mat2ch>
It's almost half the orbit, yes
<SporkWitch>
for perspective, the only reason GPS works with such tiny receivers is because it's basically just a timestamp and an id. Cell phones actually use the cell towers themselves to help, because their GPS receivers are insufficient to get a good, reliable fix (this is usually referred to as "assisted GPS")
<SporkWitch>
lol, just puleld up the stream from last night and my first thought is "oh, the blade song" lol
<Mat2ch>
Hm, 600-700 MHz are the low bands.
<Mat2ch>
but, hm
<Mat2ch>
I have no idea how to calculate how much power it needs to get a decent signal to a 450 km target...
<SporkWitch>
lol, and now beastie boys "intergalactic," because of course. presentation hasn't even started and it's already highly entertaining haha
<SporkWitch>
i am glad it's tmobile, though; they're honestly the only major consumer telecom I've encountered that isn't really evil. My only complaint with them is actually their competence. Every time I figured out a way to circumvent their tethered data cap it would only take them a couple weeks, a month tops, to fix it lol
<Althego>
leet time
<SporkWitch>
semi-random: can anyone recommend any decent resources for an ADVANCED user going from linux to OSX? Wanting to minimize my learning curve when the new job starts Monday and they're not sending the setup instructions until that morning, so even though the macbook is arriving today I can't use the weekend to fiddle with it
<SporkWitch>
everything i'm finding is "this is how you turn it on" level stuff for luddites heh
<Mat2ch>
T-Mobile not evil... I'm not so sure.
<Althego>
hehe, good luck with that
<Azander>
SporkWitch: which distro?
<SporkWitch>
i've mostly used KDE if I need a GUI
<SporkWitch>
primarily debian or kubuntu
<Azander>
id you need (relativly) simple and up and running right away I'd suggest one the Mont distros. They have a mac-like onme.
<SporkWitch>
nonono, other way around lol
<Azander>
as for learning, I leatnrf form teh man pages. everything I could fine on the internet (decades ago) was the hot to get started stuff :(
<SporkWitch>
Been using UNIX and Linux since the 90's, but haven't touched a Mac SINCE the 90's. Work gave me choice of Macbook or Thinkpad, so anything's better than windows lol
<Azander>
ahhhh
<Azander>
going TO Mac.
<Azander>
well, get used to everything being controlled by Apple, and make sure to guard your appleID as if it was your banking info
<SporkWitch>
yeah lol. Thus the difficulty, since most of the stuff i've been finding is for total noobs that barely know how to turn the thing on. I don't need basic interaction with a GUI, I need to get in the weeds lol
<SporkWitch>
don't think apple id will be a factor here since it'll be joined to the company's AD domain
<Azander>
The good news about mac OS is that is is Darwin based. Darwin is based on BSDUnix\
<Azander>
no, it will be an issue
<Azander>
apple links EVERYTHING to it. and I do mean everything
minas_tirith has quit [Remote host closed the connection]

it may be an appleID on your companie's AD but it still needs to be guarded like it was your bank account

i'm assuming the current macbook pros are Parallels-friendly?
<Azander>
how much you can do will also depend on hjow locked doen teh machine is, by your company admins
<Azander>
I belive so. We don't run parallales
<SporkWitch>
yeah, not sure about that yet. It's a security company, and in my experience they usually give their techs a fair bit of leeway, but we'll see.
<Azander>
gotta riun, time to head for work :(
