<SporkWitch>
i would definitely say i'm not a skiddie; traditionally, skiddies can barely even modify scripts they're handed, and even then rarely have a clue what 99% of it is actually doing. I'm sufficiently competent that if someone tells me what it's SUPPOSED to do, plus what it's ACTUALLY doing, I'm usually at least able to pick out the flaws, if not outright offer corrections, sometimes even in
<Izaya>
I'm in the depressing situation where I'm most productive in bash
<SporkWitch>
languages i've never interacted with (such as one customer I had at my last job, and me with zero LUA experience, but I went out of scope and took a look anyway, because hey, interesting problem and ensuring a good customre experience)
<Izaya>
Lua is super simple to pick up unless it's abusing metatables
<Izaya>
very pleasant
<SporkWitch>
honestly, i've been using python for my shell scripting for years; it's REALLY good for anything but the absolute most simplistic stuff (e.g. having a generic config files across multiple distros, so checking which distro you're on to specify the correct powerline path)
<SporkWitch>
yeah, i've just never touched it, except for that one time lol
<SporkWitch>
another time, in a CTF, I managed to solve one of the prolog challenges with an injection exploit, despite having never touched prolog before (heck, I'm not even sure if i'd heard of it prior lol)
<Izaya>
FUN SPACE FACT
<Izaya>
for the Buran orbiter, they had a university create an OS and SDK suited to their needs
<Izaya>
they called it PROLOGUE
<SporkWitch>
interesting

<Izaya>
the CIA got wind of this and got up the french for selling them Prolog
<SporkWitch>
i mean, given their close CCP ties, it's not like they'd have bothered buying it anyway, they'd just get the spec from the third party these idiotic companies contract in china to do everything, and then cry when identical products are released at half the price, since they don't have to recoup R&D since they just steal it
<SporkWitch>
does remind me of the hilarity of trying to restrict PGP under the laws relating to international arms trades and embargoes lol
<Izaya>
added a check to make sure the processor is powered on before losing the election
<SporkWitch>
though my memory could be fuzzy; i was young back then, and i'm not sure when the US sold _everything_ out to the CCP in the delusional belief that doing all of their R&D for themthen handing them the blueprints would somehow make them NOT want to destroy and dominate the rest of the world...
<SporkWitch>
hehe, probably a good idea lol
<Izaya>
it'd be funny if a processor was shut down and the computer that should be running the maneuver node decides not to because "they'll handle it" and then nothing happens when it gets to the node
<Izaya>
but that's a quickload I can avoid
<Izaya>
I should write a script to have spacecraft lower their Pe to 22km right above the KSC, so I can have them deorbit in the background rather than having to babysit them for 20 minutes while they land
<umaxtu>
or train a cat to do it
<Izaya>
if I had a cat, I'd give that a go
<Izaya>
:<
<SporkWitch>
orbit doesn't actually degrade if it's out of physics range, and I think once Pe goes below a certain point it just gets yeeted
<Izaya>
yup, but if you have Stage Recovery and enough parachutes/fuel, it will simulate a landing
* Izaya
taps forehead
<SporkWitch>
ah; i never got around to figuring out how that works or behaves
<Izaya>
that way I could recover these tourists without actually needing to look at it
<Izaya>
tl;dr once a vessel/stage drops below the altitude KSP would destroy it, SR will check if it has enough parachutes and/or thrust and fuel to do a soft landing, and do a recovery

ooof, 1k to completely redo my cooling loop...
<umaxtu>
your pc?
<SporkWitch>
yeah
<SporkWitch>
got a leak where the return from the radiator is. it's minor, and it's positioned in a way no components are at risk, but it's still a problem, and it's resulted in bubbles in the loop that i just can't get rid of, after months of trying. put my idle temp from 45C to 60-70, and i'm breaking 80 under load
<Althego>
80 is still usable
<Althego>
not ideal though
<SporkWitch>
also have a bit of buildup in the CPU block, so basically saying screw it and i'm replacing everything. new CPU block, adding a GPU block, larger and stronger pump/res (which should hopefully make it easier to work air out and not accidentally ingest air; the current pump/res has the return tube close enough to the intake that sometimes it actually sucks air right back into the loop, rather than
<Althego>
and this is why i will not have water in my next pc. it is honestly at the point where next gen hw almost requires it, but for the simplicity and easier maintenance i can still go with air
<SporkWitch>
ending up at the top of the res where it can be bled off
<SporkWitch>
replacing the radiator with a 480 (have a 240 now), and then of course need some extra fans for the larger radiator, splitters for the fan power just in case, and of course soft tubing and fittings
<SporkWitch>
i was going to do separate loops for CPU and GPU, but then i saw how fast the price was going up heh. might do it later, depending on the thermals once this is all set up
<umaxtu>
you should replicate LTT's peltier monstrosity
<SporkWitch>
i was actually doing some googling yesterday to see if there'd been any improvements with peltiers for PC cooling lol
<SporkWitch>
conclusion: no, still not worthwhile and way too much trouble
<SporkWitch>
i'm not a huge LTT fan, though. He does okay, but he has a lot of bad takes too, and he's got way too much animosity to any cooling solution that isn't air
<SporkWitch>
honestly this water cooling setup has been great overall, the main mistake was going with hard tubing for my first time doing it; i'm correcting that mistake by going with soft tubing now
<umaxtu>
you gonna dye it/
<umaxtu>
?
<SporkWitch>
i have some UV dye that i got for the existing setup; plenty left because it goes a long way
<SporkWitch>
not going to do it right now, but i do need to replace the existing UV lights with a good UV cold cathode
<SporkWitch>
the ones i have now aren't that great and put out way more visible purple and not a whole lot of UV
<SporkWitch>
the tubing does say it's resistant to UV and safe to use
<SporkWitch>
in any case, so much for putting most of this check into savings heh. the existing setup is making me sufficiently nervous to just do it, though

decided to go with this pump instead, since it's PWM, so I don't need to tilt the case and get a screwdriver to adjust the pump speed. Combine with a flow meter with 3-pin output, and the mobo should be able to control the pump speed to achieve desired flow based on temps. the water block has a temp sensor, and i'm adding an in-line sensor that I'm thinking i'll put either at the radiator output
<SporkWitch>
bumps the total up to 1089, but should be an overall good setup and more easily managed (not least because of the soft tubing to make it easier to work bubbles out)
<SporkWitch>
and of course, because of the urgency my paycheck is late lol
<SporkWitch>
(payday's officially friday, but it had been coming in consistently by wednesday at noon lol)
