<Eddi|zuHause> if you say so
<FLHerne> (a) it's a quote (b) it's a valid option because English is a silly language
<FLHerne> (but (a) is the reason I care about changing it back)
<Eddi|zuHause> sorry, it's not obvious that it's a quote
<FLHerne> Eddi|zuHause: you're supposed to have memorized the entire works of Monty Python by now :p
<FLHerne> for shame
<Eddi|zuHause> i don't think i've actually seen all of it

<FLHerne> well, I always have tbh
<FLHerne> but this is the first week I've been using it much since the spring
<Mat2ch> :)
<Mat2ch> I had to use my central heating system for the first time this week. It's a rather warm year. And currently it's off, because it's getting warmer the next few days.
<Mat2ch> Have you seen the recent video about the electric canal boat?
<FLHerne> Yes
<FLHerne> looks a bit overengineered to me, really
<darsie> I have to switch to a warmer blanket.

<Mat2ch> you are really dedicated..
<Mat2ch> I would've just recovered
<darsie> She splashed down close to the beach. This is not the previous rescue.
<darsie> And I did recover after reaching the beach.
<packbart> backslashjack used to recover crew with helicopters and trucks. but he hasn't done any KSP in a few years. https://www.twitch.tv/videos/924238583?t=00h15m19s / https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1104686434?t=03h54m44s
<Mat2ch> That gave me an idea on how to make KSP2 interesting for a long time.
<Mat2ch> But, uh, not telling.
<SporkWitch> I've never managed to make a controllable helicopter in KSP. Even going with coaxial rotors to cancel out the torque, there was just no way to reasonably control altitude.
<JVFoxy> heli in stock only.. or? I did a few with airplane+ parts a while back.
<packbart> if you count the BG DLC as stock, yes
<JVFoxy> I guess? I didn't even have that back when I made stuff...
Althego has quit [Quit: HMI Module Alpha Humana on approach to Space Station Mercury]
<JVFoxy> got me looking through my files.. guess I didn't do screenshots of the helis
<darsie> SporkWitch: kos?
<SporkWitch> I was trying using KALs and action groups.
<darsie> Since helis have a service ceiling it should be possible to level out roughly somewhere.
<SporkWitch> DLC is generally considered stock/vanilla; I was doing it using rotors and dedicated helicopter prop blades
<SporkWitch> darsie: that still leaves you with a functionally uncontrollable descent heh
<SporkWitch> it's not too surprising, though; helicopter rotors are remarkably complex in their operation and KSP doesn't really have a way to reproduce it properly.
<JVFoxy> there's also dynamics you have to take into account, which I'm not sure KSP even knows about.
<JVFoxy> example: if you push your stick forwards, you'd expect the craft to nose down. If you ever held a gyro with the axle end in each hand, then try to tilt it one side or the other. It wants to spin around on you
<Eddi|zuHause> !mission
<LunchBot> You set out to post the most cringe spacecraft possible... At first, it seems all your kerbals returned from Eeloo in normal health, but then closer inspection reveals that they all have fangs.
<JVFoxy> in planes, is sort of the same with the prop. but they design it so you don't notice it much, usually. Heli's they had to put the pitch control slightly out of phase on the rotor swash plate cuz of this.
<JVFoxy> what I find most frustrating, is show much blade drag KSP throws in and not really having a way to compensate, even just for planes.
<SporkWitch> well helicopters are just weird to begin with, because once they get up to speed they actually behave like a fixed-wing craft, just slower. It's kind of crazy. And let's not even get started on VRS

<JVFoxy> well... 'stable flight'
King_Arthur has joined #KSPOfficial
<JVFoxy> also a reason why they have to go slow.. looses lift. Has to do with the retreating rotor blade, as it passes through the air flow, its actually slower. On the flip side, the blade going forwards, is going a lot faster. One option is to speed up the rotor, use a shallower blade pitch. But.. then you run into other problems. In KSP sense, hope your
<JVFoxy> joints are super strong
sandbox has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<JVFoxy> .... sorry, you can fly up to a speed, but if you go faster than the air over the retreating blade, it ends up not generating anything.
<JVFoxy> also sorry, I know a bit about the mechanics, how well it translates to KSP.. eh I've yet to try. I just worry I might get too frustrated

<LunchBot> You attempt to build an engine that has direct injection replaced with trans-lunar injection. You are arrested for interplanetary speeding and your rocket licence is taken away.
<Izzy> two stage system, booster and capsule; booster runs out of fuel ~200m below the target Ap
<Izzy> for re-entry the capsule unloads surplus fuel and snacks at the station till it has 60m/s, which is just the right amount to lower the Pe to 70250m, and then at the Pe, lower it again to 55000m
