I've been saying for a year now that what we really need is a proper Probe v Kerbal dichotomy.

The main thing being that Probes can be programmed but operate with a lightspeed delay, and Kerbals have real-time control but require life support.

Probe programming would be with a basic flight computer, automatic operation of manuever nodes, and possibly some strange combination of Scratch and kOS.

I have only really had a lot of fun with multiplayer when we were both playing with the predecessor to Toy Solar System, 0.1 Scale Stock System for the RSS plugin.
