<pizzaoverhead>
Hello! I'm well, and you?
<pizzaoverhead>
Oh wow! Is this the first time another system has been added to principia?
<egg|zzz|egg>
it's our first attempt at making a config for a system other than the solar system, other people do what they want (regularly people try a random system mod with principia)
<APlayer>
AFAIK, we've not had a single proper microscope on Mars?
<APlayer>
Trying to find (possibly fossilized) life by spectroscopy?
<bofh>
APlayer: so we don't know if there are/were long-chain organic chemicals in martian rocks yet. an actual microscope would be *way* premature until we confirmed that first.
<APlayer>
Humm, I see
<APlayer>
I'm not properly educated on that matter, but I can see how fossils would not show up in a spectroscope but would be well visible under a microscope
<bofh>
so there's no point in checking for fossils until we first know there are chemicals that could *create* the things that would lead to the fossils
<APlayer>
That is, the molecules break down when they become fossils
<APlayer>
Well, if they aren't there now, it doesn't mean they weren't there two billions of years ago, does it?
<APlayer>
s/billions of/billion/
<Qboid>
APlayer meant to say: Well, if they aren't there now, it doesn't mean they weren't there two billion years ago, does it?
<bofh>
keep in mind that: A) a rock microscope on a rover is *tricky* as fuck. I *believe* there might be one on InSight but I'm not sure, and that's in part due to it being a static platform. B) Each instrument adds mass. Mars has negligible atmosphere. This makes aerobraking hard. There's a reason Curiosity's landing was nicknamed by JPL Flight Engineers the "seven minutes of terror" (namely Curiosity's
<bofh>
weight was already pretty much at the safe landing ...
<bofh>
... limit possible).
<APlayer>
I see the mass problem, yes. Why would a microscope on a rover be more tricky than a spectroscope, though?
<bofh>
It's an issue of launch/science priorities, is my point.
<bofh>
You can only put one, effectively.
<APlayer>
Humm, I see
<APlayer>
I guess let's open up a kickstarter to launch the first microscope to Mars? :P

also the *true* bofhtime is a strange nonlinear metric with a large random component to its derivative.
