whitequark: I would like to report a bug in the ocaml-m17n README: in the section "technical details", "UAX31 Level 1" should link to UAX31-C2 at the appropriate version of UAX31, rather than the latest which no longer has levels; in other words it should link to https://www.unicode.org/reports/tr31/tr31-19.html#C2

whitequark: in addition to the two link-related bug reports above, I am confused by "Characters of General Categories Ll, Lm, Lo, Lt and U+005F LOW LINE are recognized as lowercase letters at the start of an identifier"; Lt is Titlecase, so shouldn't it be considered as starting the identifier with upper case?
<bofh>
AND THEN READING "In order to fit the waveform in the display, I had to double the scale on the left and increase it by a factor of 5 on the right, so the yellow curve is actually much worse than it appears."
<SnoopJeDi>
in general, or for this paper in particular?
<SnoopJeDi>
I mean, HN is an interesting aggregator and it isn't going away, so by all means, HN away if you can stand it. I prefer to consume it from a degree or two removed, without the comments :P
<awang>
Both?
<awang>
I'm always looking for more insightful sites
<SnoopJeDi>
most of my aggregation comes from Twitter, I just pay more attention to curating it nowadays (namely *un*following people if their stuff isn't gelling for me)
<bofh>
oh gods orange website, ℵ₁ and quantum theory.
<awang>
Ah

I CAN SEE NO WAY THIS WON'T END VERY COMICALLY/STUPIDLY.

and yea those comments are better than I'd expected, although still quite a lot of "I have no claim to this subject matter, BUT..."
<awang>
It's more that I'll avoid posting the comments section here, I guess
<SnoopJeDi>
HN seems to tend towards extreme opinions, there doesn't seem to be a lot of room for vague
<SnoopJeDi>
which, tbf, is a mental pathology of STEM moreso than a problem with HN itself.
<awang>
It's nice for the occasional compiler thing that I'll file away and never read again
<SnoopJeDi>
It's basically Reddit for Redditors who are more Reddit than Reddit.

Like there's cluelessness but at least it's being corrected pretty quickly and, like, the comments seem to be at most one cuil away from reality.

<egg|zzz|egg>
<bofh> Okay these comments are better than the starting paper I'm actually kind of impressed. <<< gods what does that say about the paper
<bofh>
Actually after reading it more carefully I see *some* of the author's points.
<SnoopJeDi>
huh, the uptime on this VPS is apparently also Nice.
<bofh>
But like honestly his main point of almost all real numbers being in some sense not "physically relevant" because they hold an "infinite quantity of information"... I *think* he's misunderstood how von Neumann entropy works and also a simpler physical argument here is that the rationals are dense and you can take closures as needed (IMHO).
<bofh>
I also see what he's doing, he's in effect trying to meaningfully discretize classical phase space (& getting a nondeterministic dynamical system as a result, *as I'd expect*).
<bofh>
I vehemently disagree with him that it's "more natural to accept non-determinism with potentialities as a real mode of existence" for classical physics. And disagree with him that Bohmian Mechanics *quite* works the way he thinks it does, but I need to reread my Quantum Foundations text first before being certain.
<awang>
SnoopJeDi: Ah, makes sense
<bofh>
I was a bit unfair on the paper at first tho.

yea it's a good take
<SnoopJeDi>
particularly since the paper kinda bounces between "this confirms LSND" and "LSND + this paper = sterile neutrinos"
<SnoopJeDi>
the room seemed largely in agreement that combining MiniBooNE/LSND and reactor experiments could be a good way to shore up the suspicious parts of the analyses though, since the statistics/systematics are so wildly different in each
