egg changed the topic of #principia to: Logs: https://esper.irclog.whitequark.org/principia | <scott_manley> anyone that doubts the wisdom of retrograde bop needs to get the hell out | https://xkcd.com/323/ | <egg> calculating the influence of lamont on Pluto is a bit silly…
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ Deimos (Deimos itself is a point mass in Principia; given its physical shape and the scale here, having the real gravitational field would probably change things a bit).
<paculino> Is that a planned?
<paculino> a planned feature*
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ Phobos, or: why orbits around that body are always silly
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ (same caveat as for Deimos)
<queqiao-> ⟨Braden_lupus⟩ I want equipotential lines too!
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ EPIC
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ EPIC (widefield)
<paculino> How long did it take to get that angle so it was perfect?
* raptop was expecting an image with Earth Polychromatic Emaging Camera
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ ⟪raptop⟫ was expecting an image with Earth […] ⮪ well, it would be somewhere in the frame :-p
<raptop> hah
<queqiao-> ⟨kingparity⟩ ayyy
<queqiao-> ⟨Al₂Me₆⟩ That's sweet.
<paculino> Absolutely amazing
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ Jupiter Optimus Maximus (sadly there are no Hildas in RSS, they should look pretty here)
<queqiao-> ⟨Al₂Me₆⟩ ⟪egg⟫ Phobos, or: why orbits around that body […] ⮪ I wonder why the body seems to be off-center.
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ ⟪Al₂Me₆⟫ I wonder why the body seems to be […] ⮪ There is definitely some asymmetry, not just the body being off-centre, but note that there are more equipotential on the side of the camera than away from it
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ This is probably the Sun.
<queqiao-> ⟨Al₂Me₆⟩ I really want to see a WSB transfer in this frame.

<queqiao-> ⟨Overloader⟩ So, having a lot of debris can slow principias calculations down, right? is there a button to kill all debris?
<queqiao-> ⟨test_account⟩ There is a KSP setting "maximum persistent debris", it should be set to 0
<queqiao-> ⟨test_account⟩ (unless you actually want some debris i suppose)
<queqiao-> ⟨Marsh⟩ You want to remove junk satellites too. You can set upper stages to “debris on stage” to remove some clutter.
<queqiao-> ⟨Overloader⟩ im doing that. the only thing im a bit sad about is the landers i set to debris after theyve run out of electricity. visiting one once i get to human landing would have been fun
<queqiao-> ⟨test_account⟩ Landed craft should not affect principia performance
<queqiao-> ⟨test_account⟩ I think they are totally ignored by principia
<queqiao-> ⟨Overloader⟩ welp, now theyre gone already
<queqiao-> ⟨Starmincer⟩ ⟪test_account⟫ I think they are totally ignored by […] ⮪ They are, I recall there being a bug when things bounced as principia had to hook and unhook itself from the craft.

<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ ⟪egg⟫ Deimos (Deimos itself is a point mass […] ⮪ making it a point mass is lazy and completely counter to what we expect from principia. I expect the next patch notes to include the results of the mission you completed to gravity map all bodies in the solar system
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ I bet you still haven't made the KSP2 version of principia yet have you?
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ !ksp2
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ I expect more from you. We don't pay you all this no money to not get results
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ huh, the bridge does not relay the messages from RP1 Bot.
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ jokes aside I'm loving the RP frame
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ can't wait to try it out
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ huh, the bridge does not relay the […] ⮪ For those in another place: when prompted with "!ksp2", the bot replies
<queqiao-> > hahahahahahahahahahahaha deep breath hahahahahahahahaha
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ * _deep breath_
<queqiao-> ⟨jk gibbs⟩ what is the escape velocity for the stock solar system with principia? i think the sun's soi is infinite in the stock game because one time i messed up with better time warp and made a normal time warp preset physics time warp, i hit the period key and before i knew it i was WAY past eeloo, i dont have the footage because it was on one of my old computers... i heard escape velocity for the sun in rss was like 9km/s in leo...
<raptop> v_esc == sqrt(2GM/r) in keplerian land, and it's not going to be modified much by barycentric silliness
<raptop> 9 km/s would be what, Δv expended from LEO to get directly onto a solar escape trajectory?
<raptop> After fiddling with some numbers, yes, that's the 9 km/s. Δv requirement from LEO.
<raptop> Using a patched conic approximation with IAU nominal values for Earth/Sun, etc, I get 8724 m/s from a 200 km orbit
<raptop> er, wait, stock system/masses? Going to be way less. I think like 3 km/s.
<queqiao-> ⟨jk gibbs⟩ I don't think it is 3km/s in stock because it is saying you need around 5km/s to get into orbit of eeloo...
<raptop> eh, getting an escape trajectory barely requires more Δv than an Eeloo flyby, and should be less than an orbit
<queqiao-> ⟨jk gibbs⟩ I know one time I sent a probe to eve and it ended up using nearly 10km/s in lko and i was only a bit outside a kerbin to eve transfer window. To be fair i was lugging around a small unmanned lander for most of the mission.
<queqiao-> ⟨jk gibbs⟩ +I would share a craft file but I am not at my computer right now and i am not sure if I even still have the craft file.
<raptop> ...craft mass doesn't affect Δv expendature, though?

<queqiao-> ⟨kingparity⟩ is the new reference frame gonna be in the next update?
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ ⟪Al₂Me₆⟫ screenshot2.png ⮪ So, now the interesting question: did the lines make it easier to find the transfer, compared to the current « watch how the noodle wiggles » ?
<queqiao-> ⟨Al₂Me₆⟩ ⟪egg⟫ So, now the interesting question: did […] ⮪ Unequivocally easier. How to actually find such trajectories didn’t ‘click’ for me until today.
<queqiao-> ⟨Al₂Me₆⟩ Tbh this might be one of the neatest Principia features. I should make a gif, but it’s quite something to see the noodle fall into the well.
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ I should probably fiddle with the choice of contours to make L4 and L5 more visible (or L3, but finding that one is tricky as it is easily perturbed, whereas we already find L4 and L5, and L1 and L2 mostly stay put).
<queqiao-> ⟨Al₂Me₆⟩ Somewhat unrelated, but is there a reason why you rotate the planetarium when switching reference frames?
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ I keep the reference plane horizontal, so that when you are looking at Earth orbits the equator is horizontal, and when you are looking at interplanetary trajectories the solar system isn’t all sideways.
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ The rotation should try to be minimal, and roll only though.
<queqiao-> ⟨Al₂Me₆⟩ Makes sense. But would you think it's reasonable to add a cfg option somewhere to disable that? I say this as someone who absolutely hates turntable rotation XD
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ (Also, the camera rotates with the reference frame. In the new frame I should try to make it zoom out as the reference frame dilates, too…)
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ ⟪Al₂Me₆⟫ Makes sense. But would you think it's […] ⮪ Hm. is it the transition that is obnoxious, or the camera controls once you are in the right orientation ? I think working with a tilted reference plane would quickly get weird, but I guess I could make the transition or transition speed a cfg setting.
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ in fact, why don’t you try setting this to 1 radian and see what you think https://github.com/mockingbirdnest/Principia/blob/master/ksp_plugin_adapter/planetarium_camera_adjuster.cs#L88
<queqiao-> ⟨Al₂Me₆⟩ A bit of both. The turntable rotation is merely annoying in this context, seeing I never got bothered enough to complain about it. But the animation actually gets a bit bothersome when toggling between frames quickly (I wanted to see what a change I did in SEL looked like in EML, and vice versa).
