egg changed the topic of #principia to: Logs: https://esper.irclog.whitequark.org/principia | <scott_manley> anyone that doubts the wisdom of retrograde bop needs to get the hell out | https://xkcd.com/323/ | <egg> calculating the influence of lamont on Pluto is a bit silly…
<queqiao-> ⟨Al₂Me₆⟩ Also, I wonder if it's more natural to […] ⮪ Hm. Given that the new toggle is called "Show only: hide equipotentials" I think this might be a good change to make.
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ Yeah, this cleverness may have run its course.
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ Speaking of which, I will need help localizing all this new stuff.
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ (my KSP localization extension seems to no longer be crashing VS nor eating all the CPU, at least.)
_whitelogger has joined #principia
<queqiao-> ⟨sichelgaita⟩ ⟪Al₂Me₆⟫ Tbh this might be one of the neatest […] ⮪ That's nice to hear. I noticed that the issue to implement equipotentials (#3358) was created on May 3rd, 2022. We have spent a good chunk of our time on this feature.
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ if someone wouldn't mind dropping me a compiled version I wouldn't mind having a play with it. I'm away on a trip at the moment but I have KSP installed on my laptop
<queqiao-> ⟨Overloader⟩ is there a better way to check the closes approach to target than pinning each and every marker when trying to rendezvous? And some way to plan a burn into the relative retrograde? I cant seem to select the target earth orbit as reference for a maneuvre
<queqiao-> ⟨Marsh⟩ You don’t need to pin all of them. Just get one close and then pin that one and tweak the maneuver. You can plan a maneuver at the closest approach and zero out the relative movement. You select the target and use that relative reference frame
<queqiao-> ⟨Overloader⟩ i couldnt select the relative reference frame for maneuvre planning
<queqiao-> ⟨test_account⟩ Yes, it's not possible so such maneuvers can't really be planned (
<queqiao-> ⟨test_account⟩ You can still execute them with MJ smartass without planning
<queqiao-> ⟨test_account⟩ +RVEL- mode
<queqiao-> ⟨Marsh⟩ ⟪Overloader⟫ i couldnt select the relative reference […] ⮪ You need to select your target first and then the reference frame will come up
<queqiao-> ⟨Starmincer⟩ Hard to work like this.
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ I should probably fiddle with the […] ⮪ On the other hand, the instantaneous location of the critical points of these very flat regions may be misleading, see https://arxiv.org/pdf/2204.10316.pdf bottom of p. 4 and Fig. 2.
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ I sense an accuracy vs usability/hackiness dilemma
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ Not really to be honest, it is not that different from the Earth–Moon case where the weirdness is already visible.
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ you got a precompiled version I can have a play with? I'm on my laptop so no chance of me setting up the whole compile from source setup rn
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ I'm speaking to you from a bar in spain
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ my boss who I'm friends with owns the bar and invited me out. I'm technically working
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ The best kind of working.
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ spreadsheets on the beach are way more fun than spreadsheets from the office
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ Hm, the release script wants something merged, and I am off in another branch; I’ll look at that in a bit.
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ ⟪egg⟫ Hm, the release script wants something […] ⮪ yeah no rush. It'll give me something to do later
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ sat in a bar with free drinks and I'm on my laptop doing work drinking coffee
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ younger me would be disgusted
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ Speaking of coffee, I should grab one…
<paculino> Is Principia development fueled by coffee?
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ ⟪paculino⟫ Is Principia development fueled by […] ⮪ I'm pretty sure all development is fuelled by coffee
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ * fueled
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ and a variety of cocktails, wines, etc.
<paculino> > ⮪ I'm pretty sure all development is fuelled by coffee
<paculino> Well, some prefer energy drinks
<queqiao-> ⟨test_account⟩ That would explain the quality of some software
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ ⟪paculino⟫ > ⮪ I'm pretty sure all development is […] ⮪ I only started drinking coffee recently. Never used to like the taste until I had covid and lost my sense of taste for a while
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ it always tasted too bitter to me
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ before that I was fueled by monster zero
<paculino> I have never had coffee, cocktails, wine, or Monster.
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ same with lager. same overly bitter taste. Apparently it's a genetic thing
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ some people are overly sensitive to bitter tastes
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ There was a discussion in #devtalk a while back of what an RP-1 cocktail would be (since the aviation is named after its resemblance to avgas).
<paculino> Like cilantro soap?
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ ⟪paculino⟫ Like cilantro soap? ⮪ yeah
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ I can't stand that either
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ ruins a meal
<queqiao-> ⟨Vlood⟩ ⟪Damien⟫ I'm pretty sure all development is […] ⮪ mine used to be fuelled by monsters, but then i started getting heart palpiations so i cut that off
<queqiao-> ⟨Vlood⟩ * palpitations
<queqiao-> ⟨Vlood⟩ ~now i drink a couple of beers before i write any code~
<paculino> The Ballmer Peak is real?
<queqiao-> ⟨Vlood⟩ uh, from my albeit limited experience, not really
<queqiao-> ⟨Vlood⟩ it just gives you the impression of writing good code, for the moment
<queqiao-> ⟨Vlood⟩ i did find that slight inebriation made me better at racing games, though, which is definitely not a dangerous slippery slope
<paculino> So both the virtual racers and the race fans need to be drunk?
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ ⟪Vlood⟫ i did find that slight inebriation made […] ⮪ I've never done that but I have driven home in the early hours after a long night shift running on enough caffeine to kill a rhino with a heartbeat that would rival a hummingbirds
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ * hummingbird's
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ anything to keep that long blink away
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ nothing worse than blinking slightly longer than normal and realising you changed lanes during it
<queqiao-> ⟨Vlood⟩ it's the blink you don't wake up from that you have to worry about
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ true
<paculino> Aimo Koivunen?
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ I keep some modafinil on me just in case and I'll take some before the drive home
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ curse of the shift worker
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ constantly switching from days to nights and back again is a killer
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ (We might be drifting from the topic a little bit.)
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ air con set to cold. drum and bass turned up to 11
<queqiao-> ⟨Damien⟩ ⟪egg⟫ (We might be drifting from the topic a […] ⮪ ever so slightly
<queqiao-> ⟨Grzewik⟩ Bois
<queqiao-> ⟨Grzewik⟩ I have an announcment
<queqiao-> ⟨Grzewik⟩ The tutorial is done,
<queqiao-> ⟨Grzewik⟩ Let me know what you think before I make this garbage public
<queqiao-> ⟨kingparity⟩ i’ll take a look in a bit!
_whitelogger has joined #principia
<queqiao-> ⟨Grzewik⟩ F it premier happenin
<queqiao-> ⟨Grzewik⟩ lets go bois
<queqiao-> ⟨Grzewik⟩ I have a feeling this is gonna go nowhere but oh well, Why should i care, I only spent a few hours making it 🥲
<queqiao-> ⟨kingparity⟩ i mean regardless there’s probably multiple poor souls trying their best to figure out principia when all the guides are out of date 😂
<queqiao-> ⟨kingparity⟩ +(was and still is me lol)
<queqiao-> ⟨Grzewik⟩ yeah, the thing is, Will they see it above all the other garbage that aint a tutorial
<queqiao-> ⟨Grzewik⟩ * tutorial?
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ I should probably fiddle with the […] ⮪ OK, our problem is pretty clear here. These are the potentials of the five Lagrange points in the CR3BP, normalized to map [L1, L4/5] to [0, 1], as a function of the mass ratio (vertical lines, left-to-right: Pluto-Charon, Earth-Moon, Sun-Jupiter, Sun-Earth).
<queqiao-> We plot equipotentials for the horizontal lines there, plus a bonus one for L2 because it is easy to find; but in order to see L4/5 we would need lines separating the green line (L3) from the top!
<queqiao-> ⟨Al₂Me₆⟩ ⟪sichelgaita⟫ That's nice to hear. I noticed that the […] ⮪ Congrats on getting it to work. I'm a big fan of anything that offers geometric intuition (as opposed to _e.g._ the pile of numbers that is the analyzer -- not that that's unhelpful), so this is very, very much appreciated.
<queqiao-> ⟨test_account⟩ The analyzer is super helpful
<queqiao-> ⟨Al₂Me₆⟩ I don't disagree 😛
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ Al₂Me₆ https://github.com/eggrobin/Principia/tree/smarter-equipotentials should do a better job of showing L4/L5.
<queqiao-> ⟨Al₂Me₆⟩ Thanks. But I should probably finish my final exams before messing around any more with Principia 😆
<queqiao-> ⟨Al₂Me₆⟩ ⟪egg⟫ screenshot7.png ⮪ Hm why is the innermost noodle white
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ Mercury?
<queqiao-> ⟨Al₂Me₆⟩ Sorry I meant equipotential lines.
<queqiao-> ⟨Al₂Me₆⟩ ...I suppose we need a separate term.
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ ah, that flavour of noodle
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ probably because the algorithm that tries to draw the right one screwed up and drew the same one twice.
<queqiao-> ⟨Al₂Me₆⟩ ⟪egg⟫ screenshot7.png ⮪ ...why does one not look like the other Jupiter picture though, the well seems off-center.
<queqiao-> ⟨egg⟩ Not sure. Looks like L2 is higher up. Maybe it is taken at a different time, and perturbed differently? I did merge the fix to #3615, but especially for Jupiter this should have no visible effect.
