<JVFoxy>
What I did was a short section of the 'core' section. Then, a section attached directly to the 4 sides. I suspect there's an issue with clipping between the sides. It hadn't been an issue before in previous designs...
<JVFoxy>
I could have just done the four sides by themselves but would have made for a really short booster
<SporkWitch>
permanently attached, or was the issue when you jettisoned them? because ANY clipping will result in immediate "fun" because own-vessel interaction no longer applies; the instant that decoupler goes off, they're separaqte vessels, and if they're clipping, they're colliding
<JVFoxy>
no seperators

You post in the forums asking for Mechjeb to be included as stock. Your craft bounces off the surface of a nearby rogue comet.
<SporkWitch>
also, interesting sci-fi-politics point, in the series The Unincorporated Man, tea vs coffee became a matter of patriotism, because almost all of one was grown on earth, while most of the other was grown in orbit, so when the asteroid belt and outwards, and the inner planets (mostly just earth and mars) started fighting, they each couldn't get the other heh
<funkenstein>
CLEARLY, you didn't have mechjeb 2
<funkenstein>
hmm
<funkenstein>
was the coffee grown in orbit
<funkenstein>
that would make sense, considering the space and light requirements
<SporkWitch>
(lots of really good little details in that series; strongly recommend if you like hard scifi; it's of a similar level of realism to the expanse, maybe a bit more so, and i'd argue that it's a better series if only because of the author's writing style being more engaging; i really struggled with the expanse, not because of the story, but because of the writing style)

it's been a couple years since i reread the series, probably will do it again in the summer, depends on when i finish rereading the Anita Blake series. that's the Astrolabe observation module. adds a nice hab time bonus, as well as a repeatable science experiment, and it worked nicely as a "colony director's office"
<SporkWitch>
underneath it is just some structural tubes to keep aesthetics, a panorama observation module (again, hab time bonuses), and a habitation module for crew space and yet more hab time extension. fertilizer and supplies to last 18 years or so, IIRC (once launched it doesn't calculate the extension from fertilizer and agroponics, which is that green dome)
<SporkWitch>
the molten salt reactor should last about 40 years before needing refueling. could have done a different reaction to get that to 400, but i figure I'm more likely to replace it with a fusion reactor before then, once i unlock some more nodes
<SporkWitch>
the tricky bit with the rocket was getting the centres of thrust and mass aligned, heh. I got it pretty close, but it still had some drift, but was just barely able to maintain control. the landing stage (those fuel tanks were originally vertical with a pair of Sparks) ended up being perfectly aligned, so zero issues.
<SporkWitch>
dismantled the engines and the strut i used to attach it to the rocket along centre of mass, so it's got a few material kits to work with, but decided i may as well keep the fuel tanks, since you can never have too much spare fuel at a base
<SporkWitch>
next mission out I'll probably do a proper fuel depot with logistics-supporting tanks, and one of the retractable fuel hoses
<SporkWitch>
something highly entertaining about a kerbal literally going outside and hooking the ship up to the pump lol
<SporkWitch>
the real difficulty, IMO, is making an aesthetically pleasing base. Most stuff, even with mods, just isn't designed to make pretty ground colonies. Even MKS, the only ones that really look good are the first-tier "Ranger" ones, but they're tiny and not very good, and last tier that I haven't unlocked yet (those ones are proper, large hab domes intended to be individually placed around)
<SporkWitch>
unsurprisingly, most stuff tends towards cylinders and other stuff design to be on a rocket or space station, not a ground colony heh

just thought of something that would be SUPER handy in KSP2: a built-in note application. Basically just add a section to the KSPedia that let's you add and organize your own entries to keep notes like what settings worked best in what environments (just occurred to me, as I'm hopping over to my minmus rover to check the friction and traction settings that made it work well, to reuse on another)
<SporkWitch>

push the burn a couple orbits and it fixed it, was just annoying lol

i've done so many trips i usually just let mechjeb do it since it's not like i need extra practice, couldn't figure out why i wasn't getting an encounter, then noticed the mun encounter getting in the way lol
<SporkWitch>
that was convenient, wasn't even trying to, and after the capture burn, the circularization burn ended up just short of the base i'm landing at, so just extended the burn to land right on target ^^
<SporkWitch>
should come down less than a km away haha

sadly it IS night and the lights are not oriented to help on the landing lol
