does Mars have seasons?

yes
<Althego>
quite complicated even, because not only has its orbital tilt which is similar to earth's, but also has a somewhat more eccentric orbit, so the combination of the two gives you the effect of the sun
<Althego>
which ultimately can cause seasonal growing and shrinking of the polar icecaps, changing the pressure of the atmosphere, and also resulting in planet-wide dust storms

Hi! how do I go about getting a copy of KSP?
<SporkWitch>
i generally recommend steam, as cloud saves are convenient (and OS-agnostic, I'm pretty sure, if you switch between linux and windows machines)
<transhumanist>
installing steam
Tank2333 has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<transhumanist>
easier than I thought
<SporkWitch>
also note that KSP2 is entering early access in february, so keep that in mind. Absolutely still worth picking up the original, as it'll be some time before all features are enabled in KSP2 and it will only be basic sandbox at initial release, just wanted you to be aware to avoid potential frustration
<transhumanist>
will models put in original not work in KSP2 automatically
<SporkWitch>
someone might make a tool to convert them, but i haven't heard any mention of plans to allow that, but probably not.
<SporkWitch>
They're doing a new system from the ground up, to allow more complex vehicles, while also reducing total part counts, by making extensive use of procedural parts. I think they're also completely tossing the old tree-based structure for storing vessel data, so you can have more complex attachments, and also allowing you to save a "workspace" rather than a single vehicle or subassembly. As they've
<SporkWitch>
desscribed, you'll be able to have multiple, separate vehicles being worked on at once in the VAB screen, and be able to save all of them as a single "workspace" to load in later
<transhumanist>
oh my , its only 10 bucks now, even I can afford that

any recommendations for addins for celestial bodies and for starship?
<umbralraptop>
depends on what you're doing, though I'd legit suggest messing around with stock for a bit
<SporkWitch>
i recommend only doing graphics and some quality of life mods to start while you're learning. more extensive stuff adds a LOT of parts and complex systems quickly
<SporkWitch>
dated quicksave is a big and super-helpful one, as it makes it so f5 creates NEW quicksaves rather than overwriting the previous, very handy

I can't figure out how to make fuel transfer though, it it because I'm connecting at the cockpits?
<SporkWitch>
there's also an enhanced maneuver node one i like that adds an explicit "create at periapsis/apoapsis" when clicking near it, so you can more easily get it right where you want it instead of eyeballing it
<funkenstein>
also I can't seem to mod my steam instance
<SporkWitch>
funkenstein: as long as the components between the docking port and the tank all have crossfeed enabled, it'll pass. I recommend Ship Manifest for those kinds of interactions as it's a much better interface than the stock
<SporkWitch>
why can't you mod your steam instance? O.o
<funkenstein>
I don't know, I added mods with curseforge and one said it installed but i don't see it and then the others don't work
<SporkWitch>
i much prefer CKAN for KSP
<SporkWitch>
i don't like curse / vortex, find it rarely works right

funkenstein: you just need to override the version; not everything's had its max version updated to include x.x.4
<Deddly>
funkenstein, great to see a new KSP player in here. It's a special game and I hope you love it as much as we all do. Since you have KSP on steam, the best advice you can get right now is to copy the KSP directory to another location and play it OUTSIDE of Steam if you are using mods. Otherwise, a future unexpected KSP update could accidentally mess up your mods.
<Deddly>
Happens to some poor unsuspecting soul with every. single. update.
<Pinkbeast>
(FWIW funkenstein has been here since July)
<transhumanist>
I used the stock for a couple hours , now am installing SpaceDock but it seems to choke during pip install -r requirements.txt on uWSGI is there an easy fix says errror: legacy-install failure
<transhumanist>
@Deddly got direcctions on how to play external to steam?
<funkenstein>
I was about to ask the samething
<SporkWitch>
CKAN's generally easier, and literally all you have to do is just copy the folder from your steam library directory. KSP doesn't use DRM, so technically you don't even need to use their launcher, you can launch it directly from the executable, or the launch button in CKAN
<Pinkbeast>
Just copy the entire directory and never touch the copy Steam can scribble on
<SporkWitch>
CKAN can also conveniently copy instances for you and manage multiple at a time; makes it easy to switch between conflicting mod configurations, as well as testing mod packs you haven't decided you want to keep, keeping your current saves and ships without risking screwing with them
<transhumanist>
should i be using the docker image for spacedock?
<SporkWitch>
couldn't say; i use CKAN, not spacedock
<transhumanist>
so do all the plugins that work with spacedock work with CKAN?
<SporkWitch>
sometimes one or the other gets updated first, but most stuff that's actually maintained is on CKAN, can't speak to spacedock.
<transhumanist>
ok thanks for the tip
<packbart>
"now am installing SpaceDock" - hm. are you sure that isn't the website code?

I take it if a plugin isnt listed as supported for KSP version there is no way to alter the KSP version used in CKAN to be compatable with the plugins?
<SporkWitch>
there is
<transhumanist>
would you have a document on how to do this by chance? thanks
<SporkWitch>
Settings → Compatible Game Versions
<transhumanist>
that did it ! thanks
<SporkWitch>
You can't do it on a per-mod basis in CKAN, you're telling it to override what versions it considers it compatible with, e.g. if the mod says it only works on max 1.9.x, you have to add 1.9.x to the compatible list
<X>
I just want KSP2 already so I can speed up while using an ion engine.
<SporkWitch>
X: alt+<period>
<SporkWitch>
not sure if it requires better time warp or if they added it to stock as well, but that will force physics warp while in vacuum
<SporkWitch>
better time warp mod WILL allow you to do higher multipliers, though obviously with physics warp you need to be careful, definitely make a quicksave before starting physics timewarp in case of kraken attacks
<Izaya>
you can force it if you go into the versions panel on the right per mod, IIRC
