You start a large and very expensive campaign to reduce public fear of the word "nuclear". Physics kicks you out of its house, saying "Go do whatever you want, I don't care anymore, just leave me alone!"

Kerbals should be able to lift more than 65 kg on Gilly.
<darsie>
Tylo might be tricky, then.
<SporkWitch>
kerbals should be able to lift more than 65kg on KERBIN lol. 65kg isn't that crazy, and US Marines were frequently carrying as much as 90kg worth of gear in Afghanistan
<SporkWitch>
if you're using MKS, there are parts you can have nearby that increase weight limit. I think stock also lets kerbals work together to lift heavier stuff
<funkenstein>
65kg is a lot for a stubby green halfling
<funkenstein>
lol
<SporkWitch>
KSP2 dev effectively confirmed kerbals are Warhammer 40k orks, they can handle it
<Althego>
hehe
<funkenstein>
lmaoo
<Althego>
i had that idea today, independently
<funkenstein>
adorkable
<SporkWitch>
i forget which video it was in, but she said they're basically a fungus
<SporkWitch>
Althego: truly independently? Because I've definitely mentioned it here a few times heh
<Althego>
i remember the green fungus theory
<funkenstein>
Kerbal National Motto: Our Mycelium Know No Bounds
<Althego>
which aligns with orks
<SporkWitch>
they're green, hard to kill, and it explains why things work when they shouldn't: they simply BELIEVE it will work :P
<Althego>
but i dont remember anybody mentioning orks
<Althego>
the idea came to me because i played a warhammer game
<SporkWitch>
that new FPS is supposed to be available soon, right?
<packbart>
hm. I never used BonVoyage to let Kerbals walk to meet their rescue capsule
<packbart>
at 1.36m/s
<SporkWitch>
technically doable heh
<packbart>
actually, too. but I need to push the "rescan controller" button before it work
<packbart>
I always thought it was just a quirk to have the option in the EVA PAW because it didn't do anything
<SporkWitch>
kerbal's less likely to spontaneously disassemble when you load back in, too heh
<Althego>
they can spaghettify, die, or become uncontrollable
<funkenstein>
I drove a rover a third of the way around duna to meet the return vessel
<funkenstein>
I'm doing this wrong
<Althego>
why didnt you land closer?
<funkenstein>
I tried and kept crahsing, I aimedahead and all was well
<funkenstein>
also I'm not great at remembering how to line that up. I've eyeballed it on minmus, but that's minmus
<funkenstein>
;outcome add Two bounces, a roll, and all was still.

Added outcome: Two bounces, a roll, and all was still.
<SporkWitch>
minmus is definitely easy to do targeted landings since it's cheap enough to literally just kill all your horizontal velocity and then fall the 10km or so straight down heh

Jetpack deorbit to Kerbin. Due to a clerical error, the kraken is resurrected while your kerbals stay dead.
<Althego>
but on duna you can fly out some of your error
<SporkWitch>
trajectories mod helps a lot, too. Plan a maneuver that gives you ~45° angle to the ground, slightly past your target, then it's just a matter of figuring out (or letting another mod tell you) when to start your burn. MJ's landing info is really good for this, and builds in a pretty decent margin; if you start your suicide burn right when it says to, full throttle, and leave it, you'll typically
<SporkWitch>
arrest your descent between 10-100m up, then can just do small puffs until you're down safely

<funkenstein>
MJ likes to lithobrake
<funkenstein>
in my experience
<SporkWitch>
MJ is fine as long as your engines report their TWR and ISP correctly (e.g. some mod engines show correct values in KER, but not in the staging display, and MJ will not like these), and they throttle instantly (so it has some issues with KSPI nuclear engines, since they throttle up and down slowly, like jet engines). It also has to all be one stage; if the performance characteristics change
<SporkWitch>
it will not brake in time, since itwas assuming a higher TWR when it planned the path.
<SporkWitch>
That said, I have had it crash even when meeting all requirements, because it didn't think about the mountain its chosen path has in the way; it'll try to correct, but it never does in time.
<packbart>
yeah, it doesn't magically control every vessel perfectly but it can nail landings at a target
<SporkWitch>
yeah. It's also worth letting it do its thing to get the overall descent path, but then turn it off and just use its landing info window to do the final burn yourself
<SporkWitch>
MJ's a great starting point for most stuff, but not as efficient as you taking control and tweaking it yourself. I'll let it do launches if the vehicle is simple enough and has wide margins, sometimes i'll let it execute my maneuver nodes (depends on the engine and precision needed), and the docking autopilot just saves so much headache if you're a fair way out (though do NOT use it for simple
<SporkWitch>
apollo style flips, it wastes a ton of fuel since it wants to go to its backoff distance, THEN move into alignment, THEN move forward lol)
<SporkWitch>
end of the day, it just saves so much of the tedious repetitive stuff that you've already achieved yourself and lets you focus on the problem-solving
<packbart>
well, there are overrides for those... :>
<packbart>
it doesn't "see" any other vessel besides its own and the target, though
<SporkWitch>
well, as a matter of safe operating policy, probably shouldn't be having multiple vessels docking and undocking at the same time anyway; should only BE two vessels in the bubble
