I'm not saying it's foolproof but smart people work on things

it is, but it's not in widespread use, even in cryptophile circles. There's also a lot of question over the quality of many popular curves, some even suspected as honeypots (that is, promoted BECAUSE they're flawed and easy to break). That's one of the big problems with Eliptic Curve, it's not JUST the algorithm, but the particular curve you use, that affects the actual strength of the key.
<SporkWitch>
almost everything that isn't government/military is still using more traditional ciphers, be that RSA for PGP and SSH, or the ones used for TLS (can't remember off the top of my head, it's just part of my standard maintenance to do a check to see if any have been broken and then explicitly disable them)
<Izaya>
as I understand it, long RSA keys make it proportionately more expensive to theoretically crack with a quantum computer
<Izaya>
so that's a route you can take too
<SporkWitch>
for single message, perhaps, but the same processing increases that MIGHT make QT actually have to work at it, make it non-viable for most transactional and real-time communications
<Izaya>
either way, definitely spooky
<SporkWitch>
you're also the first i've heard suggesting that simply using longer keys would actually work. the concern about QT and traditional prime-factoring methods, like RSA, is that QT allows for factoring primes at orders of magnitutde greater speeds
<Izaya>
work? no, just make it harder than the next guy
<Izaya>
"you don't have to outrun the dinosaur, you just have to outrun your friends"
<SporkWitch>
that's the thing, everything i've read or heard on the subject, the difference is a drop in the ocean
<Izaya>
well, I'm not gonna claim I'm well versed in it

The Quantum Hype Bubble Is About To Burst
<Izaya>
I know people that are into it and get some general ideas by osmosis
<darsie>
Sabine says it takes a lot of qbits for certain problems.
<darsie>
Which we won't have soon.
<SporkWitch>
correct, though again we return to what they're saying publicly has been achieved so far, vs what the various equivalents of DARPA around the world have gotten to
<SporkWitch>
i generally subscribe to the philosophy that if the public sector pulled ahead, they'd have gotten a door knock. It's happened before, sometimes successfully, sometimes not.
<SporkWitch>
remember also that we're talking about cyrptography; those of us with an interest in it are paranoid by nature lol
<SporkWitch>
(though it's also not paranoia if they're really out to get you :P)

the recovery lander was also pretty clever but makes sense given Eve's thick atmosphere. he managed to make a helicopter actually work (i've never managed that), so he wouldn't need to waste any of the fuel for the ascent, and wouldn't need to use any fuel for the ascent until the air was too thin

Bill removes all the control switches for cleaning. Through an oversight they aren't replaced before liftoff. This happens in spite of the fact that C has not yet been invented.
<XXCoder>
weird connection but ok
<Izaya>
if C had been invented the switches would've been represented by bitfields or whatever you call them
