I wish my sister's partner made a video of the time he drove from England through the Alps to the South of Italy... with a bathtub in his car

hot(tub) car
<sandbox>
he couldn't find one he liked in Italy
<sandbox>
he did the same with a cooker hood

i once took a fridge 300km on a train

You accelerate to 5000m/s. Your Bussard ramjet runs over a wad of radon that someone "accidentally" left lying around in interstellar space.
* raptop
blames the pak
<JVFoxy>
funny thing is.. 5km/s isn't really that fast for interstellar space..
<Eddi|zuHause>
what's kerbols escape velocity?
<JVFoxy>
oh.. heh.. well consider 7.2km/s or about is Earths..
<raptop>
At 1 ku, like 13 km/s
<raptop>
If you're at LKO-ish altitudes and do things correctly, 5 km/s at burnout will put you on an escape trajectory
<Eddi|zuHause>
well, kerbins orbital speed would be added to that
<JVFoxy>
orbiting close to Kerbol on the other hand... something like 67k dv..
<JVFoxy>
sorry. my bad I read that wrong
<Eddi|zuHause>
i think operating around kerbin is a pretty safe assumption
<JVFoxy>
its about 20k delta v to orbit close to kerbol.. 67 after that to land? As if that'll ever happen
<Eddi|zuHause>
do we have experiments "landed at the sun"?
<raptop>
I'm pretty sure you have to do physics-breaking stuff to get to that state, but instruments will collect data there
<JVFoxy>
probably not? It be more like getting an achievement for 'summoning the kraken' or something
<JVFoxy>
so many different ways of 'summoning' but would the game even know it happened?
<Eddi|zuHause>
i vaguely remember [x] science having a setting to remove some "impossible" experiments from the list
<raptop>
Anyway, there are actual messages in stock KSP for getting data from landing at jool
<JVFoxy>
so much for 'gas giant' theory
<raptop>
Jool's size and mass are more or less in line with a normal terrestrial planet
<JVFoxy>
also ugh.. so problem: trying to land a probe on the mun, but I always seem to find steep terrain... sigh.
<raptop>
F
<JVFoxy>
and when I do touch down, momentum doesn't seem to stop and just topples things over anyways
<raptop>
I'm pretty sure it comes down to making it sufficiently wide and messing with landing leg springs&dampners
<raptop>
also, insert obvious bit here about making sure that you're in surface mode?
<JVFoxy>
I remember those early tier landing legs, landing with even just one was like you had jammed a spear into the ground.
<Eddi|zuHause>
all the planets have extremely unrealistic densities
<JVFoxy>
early days that is, I landed a probe and just touched the mun with one leg, it sat there like that with everything off
<raptop>
hrm
<JVFoxy>
ya I know how to land.. surface, slow speed. Just seems like the legs catch the ground, and even with the smallest amount of lateral movement, nope, its going over
<JVFoxy>
a few times I've touched then slammed the rocket off. Hope the coming down to rest wouldn't also cause it to flip the other way cuz .. ya know, slopes
<JVFoxy>
I reworked the lander, made a wider landing leg stance, see if that helps. Meant having to redesign the shroud a little wider.. hopefully doesn't have any other knockoff effects.

JVFoxy: do you have hold-retrograde SAS on?
<JVFoxy>
at the moment, the core doesn't have retro/prograde holding
<FLHerne>
that goes horribly wrong on touchdown because the velocity vector reverses, so SAS flips the craft
<FLHerne>
ok, not that issue then
<FLHerne>
it seems to catch a lot of people out

I've noticed SAS on a retro/prograde hold will turn off after you reach a certain minimal velocity

What 'new' thing?
<FLHerne>
Retrograde SAS turning off if velocity passes through zero
<FLHerne>
I remember crashing messily due to it not doing that enough times that I'm fairly sure it hasn't always
