<aradapilot>
well i wonder what other mods i've considered essential for years and never realized vanilla is at least functional now
<aradapilot>
Scolar_Visari: ehh, they're more airbrakes and/or control surfaces than wings, they don't act as airfoils
<aradapilot>
they're perpendicular to airflow during aero maneuvers
<Scolar_Visari>
Does it have wings? If yes, then space plane.
<Scolar_Visari>
If I tack wings on Soyuz? Now spaceplane.
<Scolar_Visari>
Wings on Sputnik. Also space plane.
<aradapilot>
"stick some more bits on it" is the essence of KSP, so, you got me there
<Scolar_Visari>
Good Heavens though, the R&D is sounding more and more like a mess. "Accelerating development" does not seem very positive.
<Scolar_Visari>
When aerospace firms finish something ahead of schedule, they've probably left out some features, cut a few corners and forgot a few bugfixes.

Very Kerbal, really.
<Scolar_Visari>
"We've finished this interplanetary vehicle on time and 10% under budget . . . Unfortunately, we also forgot to install any kind of entrance.

Note to self: pack welding gear
<JVFoxy>
arc welding work in vacuum you think?
<UmbralRaptop>
Well, MIG should still work
<Scolar_Visari>
@JVFoxy Electron beam welding actually does work.
<JVFoxy>
gas shield? hopefully it wouldn't dissipate on you too fast
<JVFoxy>
I know when they did the truck rims, used something like a sand but without gravity....
<Scolar_Visari>
Cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya even conducted a welding experiment on Mir during an EVA.
<Scolar_Visari>
Svetlana's welding experiment was even depicted in Salyut 7 the movie, but the depiction was also wrong AND offensive!
<JVFoxy>
welding the rims, the sand was acting like the inert gas... not thermite

<umaxtu>
what about Friction Stir Welding?
<Scolar_Visari>
@UmbralRaptop Going back a little ways . . . I can only imagine how much of a pain the wet workshop Skylab would've been.
<Scolar_Visari>
"Hey, I know our EVA experience is minimal, but let's try and make a former propellant tank into a space station!"
<Scolar_Visari>
They had enough problems with the airlock as it was.
<UmbralRaptop>
oh? And without Matt Damon?
<Scolar_Visari>
Matt Damon had a purpose built habitat!
<UmbralRaptop>
And he still had airlock problems!
<JVFoxy>
I still don't get how tape and plastic was enough to hold back the pressure of a habitat on mars..
<Scolar_Visari>
You know . . . It *might* work.

Thankfully, the Martian porcupines went extinct during the Amazonian Epoch.

was thinking more it was pretty windy there, throwing rocks around. Because.. why not?
<Scolar_Visari>
You shouldn't get many rocks, really. Most of the stuff thrown around is very light and particulate.
<Scolar_Visari>
I mean, the only time that happens on Earth is with things like tornadoes and hurricanes!
<JVFoxy>
ya.. I know..
<UmbralRaptop>
And the density (not pressure) of the Martian atmosphere at datum is what, 2% of earth?
<Scolar_Visari>
Less than 1%.
<JVFoxy>
14.7lbs on earth vs 1% on mars.. hmmm.. I felt a RIB inflated to 3lbs.. that thing felt pretty solid
* UmbralRaptop
needs to review the ideal gas equation
<Scolar_Visari>
Pluto and Triton also have even thinner atmospheres but still manage to get clouds of all things.
<JVFoxy>
well.. clouds..
<JVFoxy>
entirely different hing
<Scolar_Visari>
The point being that thin atmospheres are still kinda cool and far removed from a total vacuum.
* Scolar_Visari
glares at people who keep saying Mars has no atmopshere.
<JVFoxy>
... I already knew it has atmos... did you know moon has a very thin trace too? More than it used to since we landed there though...
<Scolar_Visari>
Seasonal atmosphere disorder. It should get that checked out with a mood light.
<JVFoxy>
well, sun will change things, ya
<JVFoxy>
when it comes to Pluto... sometimes wonder if its a touch denser because of how cold it is out there.

Solar activated cryovolcanism and stuff, likely. Triton is known to be similar in this respects.

Pluto's atmosphere is weirdly variable
<UmbralRaptop>
Or I suppose not so weird, given an eccentricity of like 0.25

Gimme that sweet channel log, bot
<Mod9000>
I keep channel logs here: bitcoinshell.mooo.com/users/deddly/?C=M;O=D
<packbart>
but, but GDPR! my data!
<Deddly>
Oh noes!
<Deddly>
So, at the SpaceX presentation, Elon was asked if there were any plans to make a Mars rover, and his reply was that any Tesla vehicle would work on Mars without modification. I thought that was interesting - so the thin atmosphere is enough for the cooling system to work
<Deddly>
But can you fit in a Tesla with a spacesuit?
<Deddly>
Well... there's the Roadster...
darsie has joined #KSPOfficial
<Mat2ch>
Deddly: have a look at the spacesuits from SpaceX. They don't look thicker than usual motorbike gear
<Deddly>
I suppose that's true
<Deddly>
Would be neat to have a pressurised interior to the car, too, so you can take the helmet off whilst driving
<Deddly>
Just don't forget to put it on before opening the door
<packbart>
build the door so it won
<packbart>
err, won't open if the interior is pressurized
<packbart>
although that might be another security risk
<Althego>
hehe any tsla would work, for a short period of time, exactly because of overheating
<Althego>
even airplanes have cooling issues and they are flying in a lot denser air
<Deddly>
Maybe an electric car would work as long as it's going slowly?
<Mat2ch>
Probably
<Mat2ch>
and there are no streets on mars, so everything is offroad. And also cutting up your wheels.
<Gasher[work]>
missed a chance to ride on electric bus yesterday lol
<darsie>
An experimental, autonomous electric bus in Vienna was suspended when a pedestrian collided with it. She operated her mobile phone and walked into the side of the bus.
<Gasher[work]>
judging by the way it moved, it does not feel different from a common trolleybus
<Gasher[work]>
so, wireless trollybus lol
<Deddly>
darsie, that is oddly amusing. We need autonomous walking to protect ourselves
GlassYuri has joined #KSPOfficial
<darsie>
We would combine the door handle of the Martian car/bus with a 10-100 cm2 air lock. If you pull the handle you need the force to open the air lock. If you then realize you prefer to put your helmet on first, there's still enough time to let go of the handle.
<darsie>
Rapid pressure changes are also much more dangerous than slow ones.
FLHerne has joined #KSPOfficial
<Deddly>
I'd also like to see how long a Tesla's paint will stand up to that climate
<packbart>
Martian bus. Great. Now I'm thinking Zak McKracken *and* Pearl Forrester of MST3k
<Mat2ch>
Deddly: at least it wont rust. :P
<Deddly>
True!
<darsie>
I think the UV will be pretty harsh on paint.

New Vegas... So I'm in Hidden Valley bunker, I punch Ramos just once with boxing gloves, then Veronica immediately one hit kills him, then I leave the bunker, then go back in and a guy runs up to me and says "There you are! A few of us wanted to thank you for being such a good friend to the Brotherhood", then I go back to Ramos' room and Veronica says "Lookin' sharp, Ramos."

sandbox: I'm guessing that's a yes :P. It's not an issue so much of his health as much as there should have been a scripted catch that trips the base hostile. That and veronica's reaction makes me think something caused a script to not fire off
<nate>
Then again that could be one of the various oddities the community fixed in the community patch modpack and bethesda didn't
<sandbox>
I don't think there's a single thing in this game that isn't bugged
