USB killer is a nice thing to exist. It has probably coaxed manufacturers to put over-voltage protection in their circuits, even negative voltage protection

yanno what would be great; a service that you can register your pi with, and it basically serves like a DDNS, but also an async interaction buffer, and cloud load balance; that other services can interact with as an API to then send stuff to your pi
<Greys>
so I could have IFTTT send action events to this service, and set up my pi to query the service for new events periodically; and how my pi is attached to the internet becomes unimportant
<teabot>
Intearnet.
<Greys>
then the cloud balance thing would just be to allow multiple registered pis to claim tasks out of the same pool, so I could have a few pi in various locations, all performing the same task, and if my house burns down, my automations will still operate
<Greys>
and of course nothing about this requires that it be a pi
<Greys>
ok so, this could be a really good idea
<Greys>
let's say free users can have 3 devices, one pool, and 5 "interfaces", then for 10ish dollars a month, you can have five pools, 30 devices, and 20 interfaces each, then for 30$ per monthy it's all unlimited
<Greys>
a lot of people will be able to do everything they want for free, but a lot of the users who would be attracted to this at all will find reasons to want more; it's self selecting to create small whales
<Greys>
unlimited is probably too risky for the top level, but it would basically be for prosumer/small businesses who are probably doing the wrong thing
<Greys>
probably a better way for that tier is unlimited configuration, but allotments of events, then let them purchase multiple allotments
<Greys>
so maybe they get 2000 events per month for 30$, that's an average of 2.77~ events per hour
Thorbane has joined #kspmodders
<Greys>
240 events would cover 12 events per day, only business days, for 4 weeks; so 150 events would be plenty for the free account, and 300~500 would be good for the 10$ account

<Greys>
zapier supports webhooks but is extremely limited; their free accounts don't do much, and the cheapest paid account is 18$ per month
<Greys>
I ain't gonna pay as much as some people pay for internet to perform some automation
<darklight>
I thought the whole point of the pi was diy computing? :P
<Greys>
yes?
* darklight
isn't understanding this get rich quick scheme
Greys has left #kspmodders [#kspmodders]

<Greys>
don't know why that happened
<Greys>
interfacing with services can be cumbersome and problematic, ifttt and zapier make it easy to instigate actions in response to events on a wide variety of services, but they make it very difficult to achieve anything
<Greys>
I've just spent about four hours trying to figure out how between the two of them and google script I could duplicate a file on google drive
<Greys>
haven't gotten anywhere with that
<Greys>
the easy answer is now to set up a pi, and make ifttt or zapier tell the pi to do the thing
<Greys>
one thing both of these services suck at are conditionals
<darklight>
Is it like a phone app thing?
<darklight>
Like some remote control

darklight, my application in simple terms, is that I want to have a document cloned when a certain event in my calendar begins, so every day at work I have a fresh file just there
<Greys>
there's apparently some complication with cloning files on google drive so these services can't do it; but if I had a script running on my pi I could do anything; up to and including not cloning the file, but instead uploading a local copy of it; which I can't leave to a script running on my work computer or phone, because neither would be reliable
<Greys>
I would in fact almost certainly put this service on my VPS, not a pi, but framing it in terms of how to leverage a pi to do event response work to a broad range of internet services, makes it more attractive to plebs
<Greys>
I can achieve this with webhooks, however that also means that my VPS/PS/Pi/etc needs to be reachable at a fixed address
<Greys>
currently if I put a pi in my house, I can't provide that
<Greys>
as well if you wanted to have a mobile system, say a pi installed in your car for some reason, that could get very complicated very quickly
<Greys>
but with this intermediary service both IFTTT/etc and 'the server' are reaching out to the middle
<Greys>
and of course, a side benefit of this, is that you can have multiple devices reaching out to be the server
<darklight>
You can run it from your house, afraid.org.
<darklight>
And port forwarding obviously
<Greys>
I can't, because I don't control the network
<Greys>
therefore I can't port forward
<darklight>
Oh, you're on a wifi hotspot or something silly
<darklight>
Or mobile
<Greys>
also there's probably active networking elements between me and the internet to prevent inbound connections
