one thing that annoys me about stargate is the representation that civilizations can exist for extended periods in a state of technological stagnation
<G-Mobile>
particularly in the Ori arch, SG1 comes across several planets inhabited by arthurian era european villages; that have been as such for eight thousand years
<G-Mobile>
in the Apophis arch they come across a few Asguard protected planets with civilization at protestant and viking level civilizations; the Goauld slave worlds make sense because the system lords have been restricting advancement artificially
<G-Mobile>
at the beginning of the Anubis arch Lord Yu is I believe five thousand years old, as a goald, and is beginning to die of age; he is the only surviving system load from the signing of the protected worlds treaty
<SilverFox>
Greys, what makes you think you can't live in technological stagnation for extended periods of time?
<G-Mobile>
reality
<SilverFox>
go on
<SilverFox>
we just live like we do now, but for longer, maybe society changes a bit, but no scientific progress is made
<SilverFox>
we just keep doing the things we normally do, but get no new results
<G-Mobile>
technological advancement is the simultaneous progression of multiple relevant domains of knowledge and skill
<G-Mobile>
consider the history of guns, first there were no guns, then there were some guns, and then over about two hundred years we developed to AK47s and miniguns
<SilverFox>
kill curiosity and creativity
<SilverFox>
killing the former is easy
<SilverFox>
the latter, not so much
<G-Mobile>
all that happened with guns is advancements in maching practices, and chemical engineering for metallurgy, lubricants, and propellants
<SilverFox>
and designs
<G-Mobile>
nope
<SilverFox>
we certainly didnt logically go from the 1 shot powder packer to an ak47
<G-Mobile>
designs are not advancement
<SilverFox>
how so
<G-Mobile>
if you gave modern those 3 things to the musket builders, in time they would eventually find their way to an AK47
<teabot>
Teame.
<G-Mobile>
that's just iteration
<SilverFox>
and iteration is not advancement?
<G-Mobile>
advancement is understanding
<G-Mobile>
with modern design understanding alone you could not make an ak47 from iron ore
<SilverFox>
Im just gonna leave it at agree to disagree
<SilverFox>
continue with your rant
<G-Mobile>
just look at the advancement from revolvers to submachineguns

<darklight>
It's not hard, I get that :P
<Orum>
it just amazes me how people get caught up in it
<Orum>
like, do people ever stop and think critically about anything?
<darklight>
I think what you call trolling is just someone who has a different lens looking at the same thing (or different thing) and coming to different predictions
<Orum>
right, but their own conclusions contradict exactly the thing they are trying to "prove"
<Orum>
it's like a self triggering cycle, they get triggered by their own words
<darklight>

<darklight>
But boys kinda do shit at school
<Orum>
yep
<Orum>
anyway, I think you could design an experiment like so:
<Orum>
(e.g., using politics) create two fictional "candidates", label one "democratic" and one "republican", and invite people in claiming you're doing a "Focus group" or something, and give them some info on both candidates that is vaguely in-line with party standards, ask them to read it and then vote
angavrilov||phone has quit [Ping timeout: 190 seconds]

then, pulling from the same general pool of people (presumably you divide the initial group in half), and presumably the same local bias, just swap the party labels and see if the vote changes

I other words, I wrote a C# Console reader that is about ten times faster than the Console class
<SilverFox>
Im partially excited to get back into KWS
<SilverFox>
I'll have a new point of view on things and be able to tackle the problem differently and hopefully sucessfully
<stupid_chris>
and for the reference SilverFox, that thing reads about 50Mb of text/number in about 1.2s
<SilverFox>
~c 50/1.2
<FoxBot9000>
SilverFox, 41.66666666666667
<SilverFox>
so almost 42Mb/s
<SilverFox>
nice

the bottleneck on the first iteration surprisingly was StringBuilder.ToString or int.Parse
<SilverFox>
so how'd you get around it?
<stupid_chris>
fast int parsing
<SilverFox>
did you write the int parsing yourself?
<stupid_chris>
yep, and it'S crazy fast
<SilverFox>
how much faster?
<SilverFox>
how much faster vs amount of code put in?
<stupid_chris>
line 80
<stupid_chris>
180**
<SilverFox>
I see you really love whitespace
<SilverFox>
or pastebin is shit at whitespace
<SilverFox>
im thinking the latter now
<stupid_chris>
and I haven't benchmarked it, but at least five times faster than reading the bytes as text, creating a string instance with Stringbuilder, and int.Parse
<stupid_chris>
both
<stupid_chris>
I like keeping my code clean
<SilverFox>
right, but I find that too much spacing leads to going back and forth lots when debugging or tracepathing
<SilverFox>
yeah I know, it's not bad in this case, but I'm talking in general
<SilverFox>
if you look at KWS, it's a giant thing
<stupid_chris>
<heh
<SilverFox>
Im still surprised at how well it performed single-threaded
<stupid_chris>
I should benchmark it
<SilverFox>
do it
<stupid_chris>
let me do that
<SilverFox>
I want to see some good benchmarking practices
<SilverFox>

<stupid_chris>
I've only used it in debug mode too
<SilverFox>
but never gave alternatives, which kinda made me mad
<stupid_chris>

<stupid_chris>
Stopwatches are good most of the time
<teabot>

<stupid_chris>
You can use DateTime.Now and compare the timestamps
<SilverFox>
isn't that almost the same as a stopwatch?
<stupid_chris>
it kinda is
<stupid_chris>
but without the weight of an object
<stupid_chris>
I guess?
<stupid_chris>
you're not adding anything to the heap
<SilverFox>
!tell Majiiir I remember you harping on me about using stopwatches for benchmarking in C#, yet I dont recall you offering any alternatives. Could you offer some alternatives for me to use?

<stupid_chris>
after finals
<Greys>
if every token in a supergate represents a chevron, I wonder how many symbols are used to encode the address to the Ori home galaxy
<Greys>
the normal stargate has 9 chevrons and supports up to 9 symbols, but typically uses seven; a 9 symbol address is a dialing macro for Destiny but doesn't itself represent any coordinate
<Greys>
perhaps when you're dialing to a different supercluster you need many symbols
<SilverFox>
saaame, im going to be going at KWS after finals
<stupid_chris>
SilverFox: Alright, how many numbers do you want me to test this with
<stupid_chris>
1bill?
<stupid_chris>
nah might be large for an array
<stupid_chris>
that's nearly 2Gb
<SilverFox>
100, 1000, 1mil, 1bil
<SilverFox>
and if anything more, go 10k 100k as well
<stupid_chris>
1bil ints is gonna be too large
<stupid_chris>
it's ~93% of 2^32 bytes
<stupid_chris>
I'm going to make the GC cry if I do that, and I' most likely going to crash the benchmark
<SilverFox>
do it anyways
<SilverFox>
test the limits
<stupid_chris>
can't
<stupid_chris>
Array limit in .NET is 2^32 bytes
<stupid_chris>
in "theory"
<stupid_chris>
system limitations always occur, I can guarantee I'm crashing the shit out of it with a nearly 2Gb array of ints
<stupid_chris>
I'll go for 200mil
<stupid_chris>
thats ~200Mb
<stupid_chris>
so 52 mil integers
<SilverFox>
wait, so how do you do an array larger than that?
<stupid_chris>
you cant
<SilverFox>
also, stupid_chris, once I get back into coding, I'll probably have macros for coding stuff like auto generating if statements and while loops and shit
<SilverFox>
do you have anything like that set up?
<stupid_chris>
yes
<stupid_chris>
Resharper does all of that
<stupid_chris>
I'm gonna be sad as fuck when I'm out of uni and have to pay for my license
<stupid_chris>
you can't go back to normal coding when you're used to Resharper
<SilverFox>
oh yeah I renewed that recently
<SilverFox>
yeahhh
<SilverFox>
im going to be in school for the next 4-5 years so hahaaaa
<SilverFox>
anyways, I have a razer chroma mmo mouse, and it has like, 12 thumb buttons
<stupid_chris>
Am I the only one satisfied by having a mouse with minimal buttons?
<stupid_chris>
I have two thumbs and an extra middle :|
<SilverFox>
there's some good things about a minimal mouse, but having some extra buttons or three is always good
<SilverFox>
my laptop keyboard has the o key broken
<SilverFox>
and the i key is at 70%
<SilverFox>
so the way I cope is using an on-screen keyboard, and that's hell
<SilverFox>
yet the mouse I have for my laptop doesn't have extra button on the side
<SilverFox>
but it's also a small mouse too, so I don't expect it to have one, but I'd love to have a mouse of the same size with an extra button or two so I could macro it or something

<stupid_chris>

<SilverFox>
~c 75.75 / 29.54
<FoxBot9000>
SilverFox, 2.564319566689235
<SilverFox>
yeah about 2.56
<stupid_chris>
I think I could get faster by using a StreamWriter instead of manually writing everything myself to a BufferedStream
<stupid_chris>
I'll have to try
<stupid_chris>
Hah
<stupid_chris>
just tried this
<stupid_chris>
Copying a StringBuilder's internal array and printing this is actually faster than calling .tostring
<stupid_chris>
interesting
<SilverFox>
i wonder what .tostring is doing to make it slower
<stupid_chris>
creating a string instance
<stupid_chris>
basically everything that goes to the output goes as chars
<stupid_chris>
by copying the array I can just print all the chars. Tostring creates a new string object, by copying the chars, then copies the chars to the output again
<stupid_chris>
let me try a streamwriter

My tinnitus is out in such force that my brain is asserting a topical sensation

SilverFox: welp, I made fast int printing a thing
<stupid_chris>
a division by zero error occurs when you divide somethinb y zero
<xShadowx|2>
was kidding
<stupid_chris>
not the other way around
<SilverFox>
however I was probs doing lots of inefficient shit, but none that I know how to improve off the top of my head
<SilverFox>
also GC was probs having a field day
<stupid_chris>
GC probably just had a field day with me printing 600MB of string
<SilverFox>
yeah but with KWS it's like, fuck ton of variables going in and out, and about 25-50 cells x 6 layers
<SilverFox>
it's a lot of variables

<SilverFox>
however I'm going to be trimming it down a good chunk when I get back at it
<SilverFox>
I started noting the units we were using, and came across a few points that led to a trainwreck of "wtf is this unit supposed to be??"
<SilverFox>
and I have a feeling that that contributed to the sim not working as intended
<SilverFox>
also, there are points in the geogrid that aren't nice and isometric or a perfect hexagon or pentagon, and im curious if the area of these are the same as the area of a hexagon/pentagon if it were just reshaped to be one
<SilverFox>
because if the surface area is the same between the skewed and unskewed ones, then there isn't a problem
<SilverFox>
so I've thought about a hardware config that KWS might be optimal on, and so far what I've come up with is a node for each group of cells you want to update, the main machine that takes in all that data, and that machine is basically dedicated to feeding values to each of the nodes and retrieving data from them as well, and on each node there is 1 core dedicated to intaking the constant stream of updating data to store for a
<SilverFox>
buffer flip while the other cores are crunching away at numbers
<SilverFox>
this kind of system distribution is kinda neat to think through
<teabot>
Distributeaon.
<stupid_chris>
oh shit
<stupid_chris>
I outofmemoried
<SilverFox>
nice
<stupid_chris>
wow
<stupid_chris>
so yeah
<stupid_chris>
I think thats a point for me
<stupid_chris>
because creating an array of 50mil strings out of memories
<SilverFox>
KWS is so easy to oom, grid level 8 and you've passed the 32bit threshold
<SilverFox>
~c 10 * (4^8) + 2
<FoxBot9000>
SilverFox, 655362.0
<SilverFox>
~c 10 * (8^4) + 2
<FoxBot9000>
SilverFox, 40962.0
<SilverFox>
im missing something
<SilverFox>
I think it was 10 * (4^n) + 2
<SilverFox>
oh if you love ternaries, you'll love the code for the weather overlay

So, if I have equation foo = bar/s and equation foo = joulemetres/s are they thusly interchangeable or is that a bad practice? There are a few variables in KWS that have multiple forms, and I'm curious if using multiple forms is bad practice?
<MobileFox>
Like if I have a thing take foo in ome equation, then afterwards incorporate an equation that treats that foo as a different set of units

so i get into an interesting little chat with an anti government nutcase, about how governments are gathering every scrap of data about you, and spying on you - one such method being having detectors all aroundtown to track any bluetooth signals, or microphones to record everything o.O even sensitive enough to track on onto your land while staying on public land
<icefire>
just pat him on the head and call him a good boy
RandomJeb has quit [Ping timeout: 383 seconds]
<xShadowx>
well the bluetooth bit i know can work, and i have no dout exists, i just dont give enough of a fuck lol
<xShadowx>
microphones - easy nowadays to soundproof a house, many houses already try to block out sound
<icefire>
people like that tend to view the government as this big mass of intelligence and authority and not so much as individual people that want to serve their country
<xShadowx>
as long as shit stays off my property i tend to not care :P
<icefire>
they read stories and soak up the intelligence leaks and immediately think its targeted at ~them~ and not used for its actual purpose: foreign intelligence
<icefire>
but you can't provide logic to those people, as they'll just double down on their beliefs
<Orum>
well, the /entire stated purpose/ of some agencies (NSA) is domestic spying
<icefire>
which is why you pat them on the head and call them a good boy
<xShadowx>
the funny thing is, most people cry the CIA has toys and shit, yet CIA doesnt watch the country, NSA does, which they have the same toys, and so few cry at them XD
<xShadowx>
Orum: all internet traffic leaving the US passes through NSA owned servers :D
<Orum>
as does much domedic traffic
<Orum>
domestic*
<icefire>
if it interacts with foreign entities the NSA collects it
<icefire>
which is a lot easier to happen than one would think
<xShadowx>
google does it and people are surprised when government does it :P
<icefire>
because its ~the government~
<icefire>
(see above)
<Orum>
you'd think it would be the CIA that collects it, but because it's technically on american soil, PRISM was done by the NSA
<Orum>
well, if you think Google and the government aren't buddy-buddy you need to wake up
<SilverFox>
#staywokesheeple
<Orum>
exactly
<xShadowx>
im more of "dude you openly post your shit on facebook, governments dont NEED to spy on you, they just read your bio" type :P
* xShadowx
avoids making facebook account
<icefire>
the CONSIPIRACY that the government DOESNT WANT YOU TO KNOW! SHARE BEFORE ITS DELETED!
<Orum>
well yeah, it's odd how they seem to miss the forest for the trees
<SilverFox>
GOBERMENT'S GONNA TAKE MY GOOD BOY POINTS REEEEEE
<Orum>
icefire: don't give trump any more fodder for his "fake news" claims :\
<xShadowx>
hell people brag about going on vaca, leaving their house empty for a week, brag enough clues (even pic of house number)
<xShadowx>
its like open sign "rob me while im on vaca"
<Orum>
xShadowx: you think that's bad? Our water utility company makes usage data easily available online
<Orum>
so anyone can look up your usage and figure out you're on vacation easily
<xShadowx>
Orum: per customer? ahahah
<Orum>
yep
<SilverFox>
leave a tap running then you paranoid fuck
<Orum>
so I installed a solenoid to waste water while I'm away
<xShadowx>
Orum: if you get robbed, goto them first for the lawsuit lolz
<icefire>
I didnt think house robbery was still common
<icefire>
or very profitable for that matter
<Orum>
depends where you live, but it happens
<xShadowx>
Orum: i mean dont even need to waste the water, i got a giant tank outside (no not septic tank) that fills with rain water, i could run the city water into it to fill while gone (if i had same situation), i use it for gardening etc
<Orum>
yeah, I suppose, the marginal cost of water here is next to nothing
<Orum>
the fixes costs are absurdly high though
<Orum>
fixed*
<Orum>
my water bill is like ~$32/mo if I use 10 or 10000 gallons
<xShadowx>
i have no clue the costs here, i just did it because good for env, and one day i happened to see one of those giant steel tanks for free
<Orum>
so you just stole it off of someone's property, eh?
<Orum>
I mean, who gives away a giant steel tank for free!?
<xShadowx>
Orum: some hiottub selling company had it, not sure what it was used for, just giant pill shape like propane tank at gas stations
<xShadowx>
they were closing down and giving it away free
<Orum>
damn you're lucky
<Orum>
was it in good condition?
egg is now known as egg|zzz|egg
<xShadowx>
no markings, just light grey, no leaks, only one hole for some kind of valve no longer on it, not rusty etc
<xShadowx>
somewhere around 1/4" steel
<Orum>
mmm, I wish I could get one of those for free, would use it as a compressed air reservoir
<xShadowx>
heh dunno how much it could hold, but its like 10 ft long, 4 ft dia
* Orum
is so jelly right now
<xShadowx>
:P
<xShadowx>
even worse - moving in next year ish, leaving it here
<Orum>
you wouldn't happen to live in WI, would you? :D
<xShadowx>
sure, what city?
<Orum>
Madison
<xShadowx>
seriously? like 5 miles away!
<Orum>
holy crap, you in Verona?
<Orum>
Fitchburg?
<Orum>
Sun Prairie?
<xShadowx>
no im just bsing you to toy with you ;p
<Orum>
DAMN YOU
<xShadowx>
in WA lol
<xShadowx>
sowwy :(
<Orum>
WA is nice
<xShadowx>
meh
<xShadowx>
i wanna move to like florida or somewhere tropical
<Orum>
florida sucks
<xShadowx>
whole life in WA, want new
<Orum>
it's all old people and hurricanes
<xShadowx>
florida has dolphins and beaches :P
<xShadowx>
cali was on fire, now flooding, it cant make up its mind
<xShadowx>
texas too much ego and mexicans
<Orum>
NE coast is where it's at
<Orum>
I'd love to live in NY, but they won't let me get a license there (long story)
<xShadowx>
i kinda want new orleans just b/c full of life and good food :P
<Orum>
PA would be awesome too
<xShadowx>
the more N you go the closer you get to the cess pool, nty
<Orum>
ooo, cajun food is great
<Orum>
the cesspool?
<xShadowx>
made shrimp creole a couple days ago :P
<Orum>
New Jersey?
<xShadowx>
no, washington d.c.
<xShadowx>
lol
<Orum>
oh, heh
<xShadowx>
political cesspool
<Orum>
everywhere is a political cesspool
<xShadowx>
nah
<xShadowx>
west oast you dont have it so much outside of capitol cities
<xShadowx>
east coast its everywhere
<Orum>
I donno, west coast you have to deal with the hipsters
<Orum>
far less of those on the east
<xShadowx>
what i want, is land with oceanfront beach (prefer not to see land on horizon), a creek that flows across property into the water, and tropical weather
<Orum>
well, oceanfront now won't be for too much longer
<xShadowx>
itll be underwater :D
<Orum>
exactly
<xShadowx>
id accually love an underwater house
<Orum>
lol
<Orum>
until it springs a leak
<xShadowx>
all walls made of acrylic or somethin
<xShadowx>
leaks only happen at joints, and plastics can solvent weld solid no more joint
<Orum>
well, true, but things wear over time
<Orum>
let me tell you about my plumbing experience...
<Orum>
(or not, it's another long story)
<xShadowx>
dont need full house below, but a couple rooms atleast
