<SporkWitch>
none that i'm aware of; don't think it even models the air having its own velocity (since even at most simplistic, the air should be moving at the same rate as the surface). it just doesn't behave the way it should, that's why so many spins are unrecoverable. IRL, once you start falling, you can nose down, hit the engines, and force yourself back under control, but vertical stabilizers don't
<SporkWitch>
work like they do IRL, no weather-vane effect

Surprise crash into the Moon.
<RubyBrainbeast>
that explains why that failed when I tried it
<RubyBrainbeast>
is 1.88 twr enough
<SporkWitch>
the moon's kind of big; how did it sneak up and surprise you? lol
<RubyBrainbeast>
Were you, perhaps, time warping impatiently when this happened?
<SporkWitch>
RubyBrainbeast: re: TWR, depends on what you're doing. Is this a rocket or a plane? SSTO spaceplane? What stage of your ascent?
<SporkWitch>
I've generally aimed for around 1.4-1.5 TWR for my initial stage, so i'm not wasting a lot of energy trying to push to high speed through dense atmosphere. Next stage can be higher, than actual orbit/circularization can be well under 1.0 since you're not fighting the atmosphere anymore. Transfer stages can be very low indeed, though your burns will obviously take longer.
<RubyBrainbeast>
the aforementioned mining SSTO spaceplane
<SporkWitch>
also don't forget that KSP liquid engines can be throttled, unlike IRL engines
<RubyBrainbeast>
of course not
<SporkWitch>
with SSTO spaceplanes, i've gotten best results from high TWR, at least 1.6, but once up to speed, i want to see 1.8-2.0. Main reason being you want to maximize how much speed you can get between 10km to 25km before having to switch to non-air-breathing engines, and then you want out of the atmosphere ASAP.
<SporkWitch>
My current go-to SSTO spaceplane uses rapiers and nuclear engines, and I usually have around 500-700 m/s left in the tanks by the time i make low orbit. Probably need to tweak the amount of oxidizer i have, since I still run out of liquid fuel before oxidizer
<packbart>
Kerbals tolerate much higher g loads than humans and some forms of acceleration don't even register
<SporkWitch>
Works great for low-orbit rescue contracts, though; very high net profit ratio
* raptop
approves of color-coding tanks based on function
<RubyBrainbeast>
which rocket engine would you recommend
<SporkWitch>
RubyBrainbeast: depends for what part of the flight. NERVs are excellent once you're into the upper atmosphere, though you'll likely still want to use something with higher thrust until your apoapsis is at lesat around 50km or so. NERVs have amazing fuel efficiency, but they have low thrust, so until you're into thin atmosphere you need that extra thrust from something else
<RubyBrainbeast>
Hey, thanks
<SporkWitch>
my current design uses rapiers and NERVs
<RubyBrainbeast>
well
<RubyBrainbeast>
Here's hoping I can get above 30km before the rapiers switch over
<RubyBrainbeast>
that has been my main issue
<SporkWitch>
they shouldn't be switching at only 10km; if they are, you're massively underfeeding them on air
<RubyBrainbeast>
capping at either 30km or 300ms
<RubyBrainbeast>
singular shock cones or 2 radial intakes
<RubyBrainbeast>
and my apoapsis is rarely more than a few hundred meters beyond my current position
<SporkWitch>
rapiers can easily make 25km before their thrust really drops off, assuming you're flying it right. keep in mind that shock cone intakes and rapiers work better the faster you're going, and they don't really hit great performance until 400m/s; after that it takes off like crazy
<RubyBrainbeast>
getting to 400m/s is frustratingly difficult\
<RubyBrainbeast>
my process has been:
Tank2333 has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<SporkWitch>
again, this is far from amazing, and it still needs fair amounts of tweaking (like i said, way more oxidizer than i need), but it gets to orbit and lands at the KSC reliably. Make sure to look over the action groups. I have it set up so space toggles the engine modes (hence they start in closed-cycle and intakes closed, when you hit space to start everything up, it toggles them to air-breathing
<RubyBrainbeast>
Launch at 100m/s, sharp 30-40 degree incline until 7000m, level off at approximately 20-25 degrees, acceleration slows at 300m/s, nosing down drastically reduces apoapsis, increase to 370 m/s, cap off, reach 35km, use center rocket, run out fuel OR if successful, switch to closed system. reach 50km with apoapsis a few hundred meters above. lose air
<RubyBrainbeast>
speed. fall
<SporkWitch>
and opens the intakes, hit 2 to turn off the NERVs, and then space toggles the rapiers normally, 1 to turn the rapiers off entirely once you're high enough to use just the NERVs, which are much more fuel-efficient and don't need oxidizer)
<SporkWitch>
yeah, don't do that
<SporkWitch>
go for a shallower climb to build speed. you want to keep above 400m/s at all times, because that's where the rapiers work best
<RubyBrainbeast>
my action group 6 closes intakes and switches to closed system, 4 toggles the middle engine, 5 toggles rapier shutdown, the rest are comms or mining related
<SporkWitch>
i'm between 10-20° for most of my climb until i switch to closed-cycle. and when you hit 10k, level out and build up the speed you can, you should hit around 1-1.2km/s
<RubyBrainbeast>
ah
<SporkWitch>
i'm telling you how i configured the one i just uploaded and linked for you
<RubyBrainbeast>
Ah, i'm stupid lol
<SporkWitch>
i'm no KSP expert myself, this is just something that i've gotten to work, so it's got sufficient room for improvement that you (hopefully) won't feel like you just have the solution now, but you at least have a functional baseline

error on file'
<SporkWitch>
won't let you access the link?
<RubyBrainbeast>
no, just informs me there was an error uploading the file
<SporkWitch>
i didn't set it public, but as far as i know you should still be able to access it from the link
<RubyBrainbeast>
I'm a certified KSP noob

only, I have tried again. several times.

so yes, it's an issue accessing the link lol

i'll toggle it public

bollocks
<SporkWitch>
yeah, that's the way it works in steam
<SporkWitch>
it's not a money thing, it just means "track this mod and keep it up to date"
<SporkWitch>
(or in the case of this, "track this pre-built craft someone else made and update me if they change it")
<RubyBrainbeast>
I believe it means I need a steam account
<RubyBrainbeast>
I've never bothered with one
<darsie>
SporkWitch: I used the Mun for a gravity assist to Eve. While focused at Eve I adjusted the trajectory into the Mun and the game thought I could tunnel through the Mun.
<RubyBrainbeast>
causing my own problems here, I know
<SporkWitch>
RubyBrainbeast: oh, i assumed you were playing from steam lol
<darsie>
Also, looks like I loaded my previous game ... and didn't have the contact Eve contract any more ...
<SporkWitch>
let me figure out someplace to upload the craft file
<SporkWitch>
darsie: definitely did that before lol. wasn't even trying for the encounter, just happened upon it and it helped me, so i left it, hit time warp, SMASH
<RubyBrainbeast>
unfortunately no, my partner downloaded it from IGGGames or something then decided it was too difficult
<SporkWitch>
my coincidental encounter wasn't just an encounter lol
<RubyBrainbeast>
I however fell for the game immediately
<RubyBrainbeast>
though I seem to have a problem with severely over/underpowering craft
<darsie>
Found another contract ... Splash down into the oceans of Eve. Do I want that. That would immobilize my craft.
<darsie>
It can roll on ground.
<RubyBrainbeast>
hmm
<darsie>
But nowhere interesting.
<SporkWitch>
RubyBrainbeast: DCC send request sent
<darsie>
Let's see if I can splash down ...
<RubyBrainbeast>
perhaps make a craft specifically for splashdown, unless you don't mind tossing this one
<SporkWitch>
craft are expendable, its' the kerbals inside that matter lol
<RubyBrainbeast>
what is DCC
<SporkWitch>
never mind then... lol

<SporkWitch>
DCC is a means of sending files via IRC; not all clients support it
<SporkWitch>
RubyBrainbeast: i confirmed that link does work to download it. You'll copy that file to your [KSP directory]/saves/career/ships/SPH/ directory and it will show up in-game like the rest of your saved stuff in the space plane hangar. Don't even need to restart the game, just click "open" again in the SPH and it'll refresh the list
<RubyBrainbeast>
sweet
<RubyBrainbeast>
um
<RubyBrainbeast>
where is the directory
<SporkWitch>
couldn't tell ya; i gave you the path relative to the KSP root; i only know the absolute path for steam
<RubyBrainbeast>
hmm
<RubyBrainbeast>
surprised to hear someone using brushes in a space game
<RubyBrainbeast>
on the drums in the VAB/SPH
<SporkWitch>
??
<RubyBrainbeast>
the music in the hangar
<SporkWitch>
ah
<RubyBrainbeast>
brushes are used on the drums
<RubyBrainbeast>
very jazzy
<SporkWitch>
well, i definitely screwed up this ascent, but i should still make it to a stable orbit... lol
<SporkWitch>
in my defense, haven't played in a couple weeks lol
<SporkWitch>
yeah, that was ugly; 124m/s left, but stable orbit. in any case, very doable even out of practice, but i have confirmed that design very much still can achieve orbit lol
* darsie
splashed down in Eve's ocean and waits to make ground contact. -103 m so far.
<SporkWitch>
RubyBrainbeast: were you able to grab that file? can i remove it from that server now?
<SporkWitch>
(that server has very little space on it, it's not meant for serving filesl ol)

RubyBrainbeast: A thing with a density greater than water.
<darsie>
Not always intuitive what is.
<RubyBrainbeast>
Obviously it must be denser than water
<RubyBrainbeast>
but I can't think what would be in KSP

apart from engines or maybe fuel
