Running linux if it matters

oomd or earlyoom should stop it killing your system

(if it really is running out of normal memory, and not video memory or hanging the GPU or something)

I don't know why memory use would have changed

FLHerne: did you join the Thames cruise as well?
<FLHerne>
No
<FLHerne>
I've still not been down that way, up in Audlem currently
<FLHerne>
there are never enough moorings, so the rafting got a little out of hand
<Mat2ch>
Like there are never enough parking spaces. But it's hard to stack cars and easy to tie boats together :)
<FLHerne>
it was all good until the Monday morning, when the people on the inside wanted to leave first :p
<FLHerne>
there's nothing like a hundred tons of escaped narrowboat drifting downriver to scare GRP-cruiser people
<FLHerne>
(you can bash steel narrowboats around as much as you like, but the plastic cruisers go <cronch> if you hit them with one)
<FLHerne>
never mind six
<Mat2ch>
hehe
<Mat2ch>
that's why I want an aluminium boat
<Mat2ch>
That GRP stuff, I'm not trusting it.

<Althego>
i mean going to cyberspace wit ha cybertruck
<Eddi|zuHause>
so i turned into elon musk?
<Althego>
the rocket garden is in boca chica
<raptop>
Rocket garden is a generic term! There's on at Kennedy Space Center!
<Eddi|zuHause>
i'm starting to not like this mission anymore :p
<Althego>
nonetheless i have never heard it before spacex started to make one
<Eddi|zuHause>
this cyberspace turns out to be a toxic hellhole, and any attempt to make it better makes it worse
<raptop>
X: how goes your takeover of the bad bird website?
<SporkWitch>
as of this morning, the android app's name was changed to X; logo got changed last week but it still was labeled "twitter" :P
<Althego>
yes i have already seen a tweet from a ghost complaining she couldnt find twitter on the phone
<Althego>
because it was x
<SporkWitch>
lol
<Eddi|zuHause>
that's bound to happen on a massive rebranding
<SporkWitch>
probably an iphone user, it's just buttons everywhere, no ability to create folders and put things where you want, to force you to just search (like microsoft ruining the start menu)

Just learnt that a good alternative for insulation is glass foam.
<Althego>
probably asbestos is good for insulation too :)
<Althego>
also you can try aerogel too
<Mat2ch>
How pressure-stable is Aerogel?
<darsie>
Very strong for its mass.
<Althego>
but actually brittle
<Mat2ch>
that's a problem.
<Mat2ch>
glass foam doesn't seem to be brittle

!8ball Should my rockets use more invar?

I mean, I guess one could try to get up to clever shenanigans with the properties of cryogenics (hi, Centaur)
<Mat2ch>
!8ball Should I go to the gym?
<LunchBot>
No No No No No.
<Mat2ch>
A single No would have been enough...
<raptop>
But does lunchbot mean gym as in exercise, or like a german gymnasium / taking classes?
<Mat2ch>
I was talking about the exercise place
<raptop>
ah
<Mat2ch>
and since I have already a degree from a Gymnasium, I wouldn't want to go back.

"A series of planned commands sent to NASA’s Voyager 2 spacecraft on July 21 inadvertently caused the antenna to point 2 degrees away from Earth. As a result, Voyager 2 is currently unable to receive commands or transmit data back to Earth." - a hell of an oops moment
<Mat2ch>
raptop: Wie almost do no abbreviations here
<Althego>
except when you do :)
<Mat2ch>
Then it's some crazy stuff :D
<Althego>
like usw and pkw?
<Mat2ch>
Like UStVa. Or Bafin
<Althego>
hehe
<Althego>
what are those even
<Mat2ch>
Bafin is the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority
<Mat2ch>
The other thing is Umsatzsteuervoranmeldung. Which basically means Value-added tax pre-reporting
<raptop>
Mat2ch: [insert joke here about spotting US government employees because they speak entirely in acronyms]
<Mat2ch>
raptop: haha
<Althego>
not only in tlas?
<Mat2ch>
back to UStVa: In Germany companies (and self-employed people like me) have to report their VAT balance on regular basis. Most have to do it every month, if you don't make much money some only have to do it per quarter or even per year
<Mat2ch>
oh, and not just report, but also pay that kind of taxes immediately
<raptop>
Many are longer. Sure, NASA's NGRST has CGI and WFI for instrumentation, but keep in mind that it'll likely end up doing survey work for JWST
<raptop>
Being in situations where you have to report (and possibly pay) quarterly taxes are Fun enough, I can't imagine monthly
<Mat2ch>
Well, since you should have everything done electronically these days it's just the press of a button in your accounting software to report it and then make giro transfer to your local tax office.
<Mat2ch>
and since I'm an IT guy and allowed to do it a bit differently and haven't found the time to find a good accounting software for my needs (I'm allowed to do several things differently than bigger companies), I have to do a bit more work here. But not that much
<Mat2ch>
Mostly opening a website and filling in two values there ;)
<packbart>
as a simple employee, I never have to fill out tax forms :)
<Mat2ch>
only if you never started doing it and even then I would always do my taxes, because you can usually get a bit money back
