<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ is there any way to have something similar to the "Reference frame fixing the barycentre" for planning to go to other planets?
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ or a better question
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ what's the best way for me to figure out the optimal time to launch to another planet
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ with the moon, using the barycentre is a great way for me to see when it's closest vs furtest
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ with the moon, using the barycentre is a great way for me to see when it's closest vs furthest (edited)
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ can I do the same somehow with mars and earth?
<queqiao-_> ⟨rsparkyc⟩ Sun centered reference frame, then look for when the two planets line up on tangental vector line of the inner planet
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ I read a bit and found the mechjeb advanced interplanetary transfer. It helps a lot
<queqiao-_> ⟨rsparkyc⟩ yes, but it won't work quite as well with principia
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ saw that too..
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ does it use conics to do those?
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ does it use patched conics to do those? (edited)
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ this seems like a good way too
<queqiao-_> ⟨rsparkyc⟩ not sure what exactly it uses, but it's designed around stock
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ it seem's like a good way to see when they are nice and close
<queqiao-_> ⟨rsparkyc⟩ but you don't always want to launch when they're close
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ true.
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ but it's good to see when they *are* closest
<queqiao-_> ⟨rsparkyc⟩ (actually, you never want to launch when they're closest
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ oh?
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ I want to launch before. so I arrive by then, right?
<queqiao-_> ⟨rsparkyc⟩ it depends on if you're going to an inner planet vs an outer plannet
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ so. Venus and mars flyby
<queqiao-_> ⟨rsparkyc⟩ yep, one would be early (venus), one would be later (mars)
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ makes sence
<queqiao-_> ⟨rsparkyc⟩ i talk about the timing in that wiki article, did you read that section?
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ which article
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ oh right
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ but will this still apply for rss?
<queqiao-_> ⟨rsparkyc⟩ the concepts are generally the same
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ aight
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ I'll properly read it then
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ I was reading the principia concepts one
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ but thanks! I'll ask more questions after, if needed.
<queqiao-_> ⟨rsparkyc⟩ cool

<queqiao-_> ⟨pEdro⟩ From my (limited) experience i can say that transfer window planers are still somewhat accurate in most scenarios.
<queqiao-_> ⟨pEdro⟩ My actual burns matched the ∆V given by the planner with about 3% variance
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ I tried doing an "ASAP" to mercury and it said around 7743 m/s dv and I couldn't find out how it would do that. I needed around 10000 m/s dv. but that's probably just my inexperience
<queqiao-_> ⟨bongotastic (he/him)⟩ Transfer window planner is a good mod to ballpark where the transfer windows are. I suggest that you simulate to that time point then do your planning with Principia.
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ That's the general idea. ^^
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ Just takes a long while to plan and figure out. Thanks though!
<queqiao-_> ⟨bongotastic (he/him)⟩ It stinks all the more if something happen and you can make that window as planned. The risk of running a space program 😉
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ yup
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ just love the ascent guidance ignoring my rcs to ullage
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ just love the ascent guidance ignoring my rcs to ullage.. (edited)
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ literally just happened
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ and for some reason it keeps doing it at *random* times
<queqiao-_> ⟨Butcher⟩ I just twp for planning times then a kos script to give me the correct LAN for my parking orbit to make the transfer trajectory.
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ I can launch the same vehicle and it won't do it. Maybe it's just that specific engine though..

<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ I can launch the same vehicle and it won't do it. Maybe it's just that specific engine though.. (ullage rcs) (edited)
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ twp?
<queqiao-_> ⟨Butcher⟩ Transfer window planner (the mod)
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ it's in the pack by default right?
<queqiao-_> ⟨bongotastic (he/him)⟩ Nope.
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ well
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ then I only got the mechjeb one
<queqiao-_> ⟨bongotastic (he/him)⟩ Not a bad option, TBH, but TWP has more options, and exports to KAC.
<queqiao-_> ⟨bongotastic (he/him)⟩ Not a bad option, TBH, but TWP has more options, and exports to KAC (Kerbal Alarm Clock). (edited)
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ ah
<queqiao-_> ⟨Elias⟩ well it's not too much work as long as it's still just as accurate
<queqiao-_> ⟨bongotastic (he/him)⟩ Interplanetary transfers are interesting to plan, with the right frame. the tutorial mentioned above is really good.

<queqiao-_> ⟨rocketman⟩ could someone point me to a good resource explaining why the moon's orbit changes over time?
<queqiao-_> ⟨Stonesmile⟩ Wikipedia is a start at least; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_precession
<queqiao-_> ⟨Baselet (He-Man)⟩ I just make maneuver nodes for transfers with a probe and then add those to KAC
<queqiao-_> ⟨Baselet (He-Man)⟩ and add the dV in the desc so I know what cradts can make it
<queqiao-_> ⟨Zeusbeer⟩ Haha principia history goes brrrt
<queqiao-_> ⟨Zeusbeer⟩ (This is an unguided reentry btw)
<queqiao-_> ⟨Zeusbeer⟩ (This is an unguided reentry, it apparently has some aerodynamic properties btw) (edited)
